Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were chairs and tables set up all across the lawn; some were by the bonfire, for the people who wanted to be warm and central to everything else at the picnic, and some were set farther away from the action, for the people who wanted more peace and quiet.

There was no escaping the glitter though. Sorry, but not really.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"It's always good to eat a bit first. And you should be in good company - I think several of the people are here mostly for the food."

Kaylin gave him an odd look. "They aren't all here mostly for the food? I mean, except you, of course, but you're a teacher and so you need to come see the new people and, well, I always like seeing you, so it's good you're here. But, you know..." She gestured towards the tables. "Food."

Hannibal laughed. "I like to think at least some of them are here to meet the new students. Or the new to meet the old. But there is a reason the school provides the food, after all."

"I suppose," Kaylin said. "And some of them seem nice enough. But the food's really why I come."

"And you're certainly not alone," Hannibal answered, smiling.

He didn't; he brought his own. But Kaylin was still probably in good company.

"And I usually see you here and I like that," she admitted. "I mean, I could just show up at your house or something, but that just seems kind of rude."

"It's a pleasure to see you, too," Hannibal answered, smiling.

"My home is always open to students and friends, but if you come without calling first, I may not be there. Do you have a phone yet?"

"I do," she said with a smile. "One of the smart ones - not that I understand a lot of what it does."

She pulled it from her pocket and showed him. "The man tried to sell me a thing for around it with sparkly things on it, but I told him that was ridiculous."

"Here." Hannibal took out his own phone and switched to the contacts. "This is my number." He doubted she had kept her old syllabus. "Now you can call if you'd like to visit. Not that it should stop you if you need something and can't call."
notamascot: (What?)

"Oh... okay..."She looked at it for a moment. "Thank you. I... don't know how to give you my number, though."

"The simplest way is to call me now," Hannibal said. "Then I can store your number, and you can store mine."

"Oh..." She put HANNIBAL in the list along with his number. And then did the call-y thing the way she was supposed to and waited to see if his phone would ring.

Yes, she used all caps, this was Kaylin.

She'd figured out how to type on the thing; that was a feat of its own.

Hannibal's phone rang, and he answered and hung up, then saved her number with her name. (He did not use all caps.) "There. Now you can call or send me a message whenever you like."

"Huh..." She observed the phone as if she expected it to do something surprising, then put it back away. "Good. I will do that. Though I still think mirrors are easier."

If she ever called? She'd probably yell to make sure she was heard.

"Only if you know how to use them," Hannibal pointed out.

Hannibal would probably wince a lot.

"Everybody can use a mirror," she said with the unconscious dismissiveness of someone from whom they were second nature. "They're easy. You just say what you want."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-01-05 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
"So, you go up to a mirror and start talking?" Hannibal asked. "Any mirror hanging on the wall?"

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-01-05 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Any spelled mirror, yes." And pretty much if you could actually afford any sort of a mirror, it was spelled. "Don't ask me how the mages make them work, but once you have one they're easy."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-01-05 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
"So you have to know if one is spelled. What happens then?" Hannibal asked. "How does it know you aren't simply talking to someone else in the room, or to yourself?"
notamascot: (Happy)

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-01-05 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I don't usually go up to my mirror and say 'Halls of Law, Marcus', if I'm just talking to myself. And if I do, I deserve to be surprised," Kaylin said with a grin.

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2015]

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-01-05 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"So, you have to say who and what you mean to contact." Hannibal nodded. "Could you say, 'Marcus, Halls of Law' instead? Or just 'Marcus' if there's only one of him? Or what if there were two of him?"

Yes, he was making it complicated. That was sort of the point.
notamascot: (Feeling Low)

[personal profile] notamascot 2015-01-09 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Sure, if you want."

All these questions. You'd think they were in class.

"I think you're just trying to make things complicated."

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2015-01-09 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
"I am," Hannibal agreed, smiling. "But these are things you don't think about, because you know them. I wouldn't, in your world. You will get used to the phone."
notamascot: (Feeling Low)

She sighed. "You're probably right. As usual."

Hannibal laughed. "Years of experience. And education." Because he was never not going to try!
