"Hey," Josh said. "Hope you're all unpossessed or whatever. Last week was weird."

He took a sip of his coffee.

"Anyway. Finals. Today you have a series of multiple choice followed by an essay, so...a lot like the SATs, which most of you probably aren't taking because you're all from weird other dimensions where college doesn't matter or something."

Josh had grown a little jaded.

"Anyway, happy holidays!" He gestured around at the candles. "Enjoy the ambience?"

This section was fifty questions full of names and dates about American history--but with a heavy emphasis on the contributions of women and people of color. How'd you do?

Cosette got about half of them right, because this class always made her do a lot of research on her library days, but all things considered that was pretty good for her. Like a school taught by extremely ascetic nuns in the 1820s cared much about French history, let alone American history.

Kathy wouldn't say that she'd aced the test--mostly because the fear of bragging was heavily ingrained in her by now. But what this class her her own AP US History studying didn't prepare her for, her own SJW interests took care of handily.

Write an essay about a person you learned about in class who inspired you!

Not Josh.

Kathy wrote a long essay about how she'd been absolutely inspired by the Texas Board of Education's willful disregard of history, science, and facts. It was as bitingly sarcastic as she could make it without writing 'THIS IS SATIRE' all over the margins.

I can hardly wait for my high school career to be over, so I can finally be done with all this education and can finally take my place as the mindless consumer that the Texas Board of Ed wants me to be. And, since I'm also a woman, I can finally start doing my duty to God and country by having children (not too many, so I don't threaten the white hegemony, of course) and teaching them all about this great country of ours, which is lucky enough to count Moses as a Founding Father. Amen.

"Excuse me, Mr. Lyman?" Unlike the kids from other dimensions and whatnot, Kathy was very firmly in this one, which meant SATs and college prep figured quite heavily into her future. "Do you have a minute to talk?"

"I've got ten, even," Josh said. "What's up?"

"I was wondering if you'd be willing do me a favor?" Kathy asked, nervously playing with her hair. "I'm looking for teachers to write me a strong letter of recommendation for college and I thought that you might be, umm, willing to do that. For me."

Josh's eyes lit up. "Of course. Where are you applying?"

"UCLA is my first choice," Kathy said, instantly all relieved smiles. "UC Berkeley would also be really cool. I'll probably apply to USC, too. And, umm, Stanford. But that's kind of a longshot, you know? I mean, it's Stanford. Even if I got in, I'd need all the financial aid, ever. But I can't not at least try."

Which was a huge step for Kathy, considering a few years ago she would have just laughed at the very idea of applying, convinced it was pointless.

"Definitely apply to Stanford," Josh said, Ivy League snob that he was. "I can make this school sound elite and not weird and you're way too smart not to aim that high."

Kathy blushed, pleased as punch at the praise. "Oh, I'm not that--" She checked herself. "I mean, thank you. It's something I work very hard at."

Just like not discounting herself and her abilities anymore.

"I don't know which of us will have the harder job. Me, getting into Stanford or you, making this place sound less crazy than it really is."

"Me," Josh said promptly. "We have candles and inexplicable Snuggies."

"But those probably don't need to be mentioned in my letter of recommendation," Kathy pointed out. "And if they do, I am picturing the college application process very wrong."

"Oh, it'll just be a way for me to talk about you thinking quickly and adapting to sudden changes," Josh said. "I was in politics for decades. The college admissions team is unprepared for my level of bullshitting ability."

It is currently 38 here.
