Angela is behind the desk, listening to Throwing Muses on her iPod and staring into space.

"Hey," Angela said, finally turning her music off. "So did you hear the announcements this morning?"

"Yeah, everything's in upheaval again," said Janet. She put her palm down on the desk and tried using her elbow to hold the pen down while she lifted the her palm. "Also, I think the universe has something against me."

"I suppose neither thing should be news by now," Angela said, but she was pouting. "What's the universe doing to you?"

"Not really, but it's still annoying." She noticed Angela pouting. "Are you okay?"

And to demonstrate why the universe hated her, she started held the fingers of her right hand splayed out, palm down, to show the pen stuck to her hand. Maybe she could tap the keys with the pen when she checked her e-mail? Since she couldn't type like this.

"I'm fine," Angela insisted. "I'm just a little sick of all the upheaval here. I want a boring week. Just once."

She blinked at the pen stuck to Janet's hand. "What happens if you try to pull it off? Or, um, if someone else did, in case your other hand is all sticky too."

"Okay, then," said Janet. "People do get used to upheaval on a weekly basis, though. Trust me." Janet poked at the power button on the library's computer with her pen. "On the other hand, maybe you just need a vacation?"

"I haven't actually tried to touch it with my other hand," said Janet. Once the computer booted up, she managed to log in by using her elbow and tapping at the keys with the pen in her hand. "Just in case they're both sticky." She checked her e-mail and quickly typed out a message to Parker before turning back to Angela. "Maybe you can pull it off? Just don't touch my hand."

"A vacation sounds really good," Angela agreed. "Are you going to England next week?"

She frowned at the pen, finally grabbing on to where it stuck over the side of Janet's thumb a little ~~assuming that makes sense with how Janet's holding it, if not she grabs it elsewhere~~.

She pulled.

"No, I was going to stay here and relax for once. How about you?"

"Ouch!" yelled Janet, feeling her skin pull. The pen didn't come off, though. She heard a ping and read Parker's reply then replied.

"I'm going. See new places, expore new things, all of that," Angela said.

She frowned, watching Janet answer the emails. "How can you type with that hand?"

"It'll be a lot of fun for you," said Janet. "And it'll be away from here. Is Marty going too?"

Janet poked at the keys with her pen. "I can't!" She glared at the computer. "I'm using the pen because I don't want to get my hands stuck to the keyboard. I don't normally type this slow."

"I think so," Angela said. "I saw his name on the sign-up list, anyhow. We haven't really talked about it yet."

She looked speculatively at the pen. "I wonder if we could somehow cut it off. Is lint and stuff sticking to your hands, too, or just the pen?"

"Either way, it'll be fun."

"Do you have anything that will cut through a pen?" asked Janet dubiously. "I haven't touched anything else to find out." She nodded, and glanced at Angela. "Okay, time for a controlled experiment. Can you put a small piece of paper down on the counter?"

"There has to be something around here that would. An X-acto knife, maybe?" Angela suggested.

She placed half a sheet of notebook paper on the counter. "Have fun being a lab rat."

"The potential to slip and accidentally slice an artery chills me, however," said Janet. The thought of a student with anything scalpel-like coming near her exposed skin makes her uneasy. "No offense."

Janet poked at it with her fingertip and lifted her hand up. It stuck. "Can we try to rip the paper off from around my fingertip?" she asked, holding it out to Angela. "And thanks for the help. This is just ridiculous."

"Where's your sense of adventure?" Angela sighed.

Carefully, she peeled away as much of the paper as possible.

"I think my sense of adventure is broken today," said Janet, grinning. "Possibly because if I instinctively clamp my other hand over it to staunch the bleeding, I don't know if I could pull it away."

A large chunk of white paper was left. "Better than nothing, and at least we know now, right?"

"You're lucky you didn't end up stuck to your desk, or something," Angela said.

"Does it hurt at all?"

Janet nodded. "That's a very good point. I'd hate to have to tote that around with me all day."

She shook her head. "Not unless I try to pull something off it."

Angela looked concerned as she checked her watch. "So, um ... I hate to leve you, but I was thinking I might take lunch to Marty in town. Will you be okay here, or should I lock up, or what?"

"No, go have fun," said Janet. She held up the pen. "I can type as long as I don't have to use the shift key. And if I need to, I can shove the lock shut with my elbow or something."

"And somebody else will probably be along pretty soon, too," Angela said. "PLus, you could always kick people if you dedded to."

She waved as she set off.

"Ooh, there's a bright side," said Janet, contemplating having to kick someone as she waved to Angela.

Stupid pen still didn't come off, though.
