Sociology of Violence: 2nd Period

"Hello, everyone. Welcome to class. I hope you prepared your questions for today, because our guest speaker is here to discuss issues of security and law enforcement with you."

"Please welcome Constable Fraser of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and the current head of Fandom High's security and total dreamboat."

Sociology of the Paranormal: 6th Period

"Today, you will be broken up into project groups. I am going to give you your topics, and what I'd like each group to do is come up with several discussion questions based on your topic.

If you have any questions or concerns, let me know."

Homework: Here is the Study Guide for your midterm. I suggest you begin to review it.

[Slow-play for both classes, obviously and as always. There are threads of OCD ready for you. :) ]

Draco is secure enough in his sexuality to admit to himself that Fraser was damn good looking man. When it was his turn to ask his question he asked Fraser "So what has been the most dangerous thing you have ever done?"

"Well, while there have been many a dangerous event, some of them even occurring at this school, the answer to that question takes me back to my time in Chicago," Fraser says. "There was a time where I stepped in front of a gun, of my own volition, not entirely knowing whether the owner of the gun would listen to me or pull the trigger. It was frightening. You see the gun, know that one small bullet could end your life and you're face your own mortality. Luckily, the owner of the gun listened to reason and chose not to shoot me that day. Thank you for your question."

Seeing the mountie definitely perked up Veronica's otherwise incredibly shitty morning. Cause wow, he really was hot. And she'd always had a thing about guys in uniform.

She carefully avoided looking at Phoebe, Bel or Piper when she posed her question.

"What kind of success rate have you seen with the rehabilitation of violent criminals?" she asked.

"An interesting question," Fraser says, looking down for a moment. "My personal belief is that there is some good inherent in everyone. It might be buried deep and ignored but it's there. I tend to believe that even the most violent of criminals can be helped. Success rate? While I don't have the official numbers, I can say that there are successes. And there are failures. I tend to look at the person, the situation, rather than the statistics."

Cole and Phoebe sneak into class late, flushed and disheveled. Cole's grinning, Phoebe's glowing. They take their seats, and when it's time for Cole to ask a question, he says, "Umm..why did you decide to get into law enforcement?"

"Because I wasn't any good at hockey," Fraser jokes. "Seriously though, my father was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as well. I guess you could say it was in the blood. I grew up with the RCMP and grew up knowing their ethic and code. It was something I wanted to be a part of more fully as I aged."

Phoebe was in a very good mood and thus had no questions in her mind about violence right now.

"I have two questions," she finally said. "1) Can I wear your hat? and 2) What do you think of the Arts and Choir?"

Yes, Phoebe was one of the three girls who serenaded him during song weekend.

"My hat?" Fraser smiles and hands the Stetson to Phoebe. "Of course, you may. Arts and Choir? Well, since arriving to this town, I've sang...many times. I've been sung to. Thank you for that, by the way. The arts, music, and the like tend to bring smiles to people's faces. That's a good thing for me."

Phoebe's first question had been a joke since so many people in school were obsessing over his hat, so she had never expected him to hand it over to her. She put it on with a grin. Too bad Xander wasn't here, she would have handed it over to him immediately.

"Making people smile is a very good thing."

"I agree," Fraser says, smiling. "My singing skills leave a lot to be desired but those that enjoy singing? Should sing."

Piper wasn't swooning so much that she nearly forgot her question. Not at all. Well, maybe just a little.

"Has the weirdness of this town changed the way you deal with issues of security?" she asked curiously.

"It definitely has, yes." Fraser crosses his arms in front of him. "For instance, when something out of the ordinary appears, I don't automatically dismiss it as something unusual. Now, I take time to investigate the occurrence to make sure it isn't another snow monster or vampire. And I've only been here a few weeks. I've heard about some of the things that happened previous to when I arrived."

Peter tried not to laugh at the thought of the last time he had seen Constable Fraser. He then asked a question that had some relevance to his life. "What are your feelings on vigilantism? If someone has the ability and the right moral character to actually help the law from the outside, are that person's actions - even if violent - bad?"

Re: Soc of Violence | 2/27

[identity profile] just-add-starch.livejournal.com 2006-02-28 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Vigilantism?" Fraser purses his lips and looks at Peter. "My first instinct is to say that the laws are in place for a reason. They are there for people to abide by and to prosecute those who fail to abide by those laws. Vigilantism is one of those fine lines that, as a member of the RCMP, cannot agree with. As a person? I don't always agree with my RCMP thinking. I know that's a twisted logic but as a uniformed member of law enforcement, I would rather vigilantes let me apprehend the criminals rather than attempt to do it themselves and get injured. As a person, as someone who has seen crime happen that should never happen, I can understand vigilantes. And sometimes, just sometimes, those vigilantes will just slip through my fingers. Oops."

"Thank you, sir," Peter said, thinking about the answer.
