Detention, Saturday, February 25th 2006

Fraser's standing quietly at the front of the classroom, waiting for those with detention to file in and take their seats.

The names are listed on the board.

When everyone is seated, Fraser starts speaking. "I'm sure you all know why you've been called here today. Whether it be for misbehavior, disrespect to a teacher, not going to class or, and sorry Mr. Sandburg, being the winner of a very peculiar lottery, you have all earned detention in one way or another. It's an unfortunate circumstance and one I'm sure you do not wish to repeat. We will begin activities shortly, we will break for lunch, and there will be more activites after lunch. If everything is successful, I will dismiss you in the early evening. Any questions?"

Xander stands up, glances uncertainly at Constable Fraser, and asks, "Could I maybe borrow your hat?"

"All right," Fraser says and hands Xander his hat. "I hope it helps."

Xander puts the hat on his head. Then takes it off and holds it. "I read that you're supposed to take your hat off, but that didn't work without, y'know. A hat."

Then he clears his throat, and with only a small squeak at the beginning, sings,

He's totally flat, but he's got the pronunciation down. Mostly because he downloaded and listened to several versions ~~over and over again~~ during his spree of Mountie- ~~ogling~~ -googling, not because he remembers enough French to know what he's singing. Yes, he mixed the languages on purpose.

He coughs after finishing. "I... could try the Inuktitut, but I think it would only hurt us all, sir."

"Xander!" Blair smiled innocently. "My, look at that hat. Isn’t it cool? Let’s talk about it, okay?"

"Talk? In English, right?" Xander's still looking at the floor and it's unlikely his face has un-pinked yet.

"In English." Blair nodded. "So...the hat?"

The Mountie just called Xander, 'Xander.' He's not gonna be real coherent for a while. ~~Please pretend you notice the difference.~~

Xander looks down at the hat that is still, in fact, in his hand, because Chloe hasn't remembered to ask him for it yet. "It's a nice hat."

Blair's beginning to think that the hat has some sort of brain dulling effect on the hat worshippers, possibly some sort of drug induced stupor.

"Yes." Deciding to speak slowly, he smiles gently at Xander. "Nice hat. Does the hat tell you to do things?"

If Xander were actually with it today, this would so be a redux of the twinkie-wrappers-as-Gremlin-protection experience. But, sadly, he's so not.

"Um. No? It's a hat."

The Mountie tells him to do things, occasionally. Like now, with the request to hand over the hat, plz. Xander ducks over to do so, and comes back with another mountie-approved 'Xander' to add to the count.

"It's a nice hat, though."

Blair sighed. He was obviously seen as an outsider to the hat worshipping crowd. He reached out to pat Xander on the shoulder and moved off. "I'm sure it is, buddy."

He's a little weird, Xander thought, watching him go. Followed almost immediately by The Mountie called me Xander! Again! I find this inexplicably pleasing!

"Mr. Harris..." Fraser is speechless. "That was...well, that was quite amazing. The pronunciation was perfect and the language, while tough to master, seemed easy for you. Thank you for that."

Xander is for some reason reluctant to admit that he mostly only remembers how to say 'where's the bathroom' and 'touch not the cow from Thursday' in French, so he just flushes and mutters, "I... did some research. For a project. AlsoyoucancallmeXanderifyouwantyouknow."

The thought only hits him now that he just sang. In front of the Mountie. He glances at the floor, but there's an inconvenient lack of convenient Hellmouths opening up.

"It was excellent research," Fraser compliments. "And it was an excellent rendition of my country's anthem. Thank you, Xander."

Chloe has to admit, she's very impressed with Xander's performance. And possibly just a bit jealous.

Xander's totally not handing over the hat until you pry it from his cold dead fingers, bitca.

Or, you know, at least bug him about it because there's no way he remembers that he's supposed to let go of it.

Chloe makes gimme hands at Xander, because sadly, this whole thought reading thing doesn't work in reverse. "My turn."

"Xander, it is Miss Sullivan's turn with my hat. She needs to perform as well."

He called me Xander. Again. What was the question? "Oh. Yeah. Okay. ~~I guess...~~"

Xander looks down at the hat, and over at Chloe. After a second of chasing away echoes of those bizarre mental images from earlier, he reluctantly holds it out to her.

Chloe takes the hat, concerned for a moment that he might snatch it back. But he lets go of it enough for her to take it and put it on her head. "Thank you."

"It looks very nice on you, Miss Sullivan," Fraser compliments. "I look forward to your presentation."
