Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Were you a veteran Fandom resident? Did you finish getting your brain broken by your sibling and/or buddy? Did you just want to sit down to recover from the shuttle ride? If so, then there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn just waiting to be filled!

[This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

This was Anders' first welcome picnic where he wasn't completely new, and a sense of smugness at that overtook him as he settled by a tree with a plate of snacks.

He was keeping a keen eye out for anyone who looked like they might be from Thedas. A new student with Templar sympathies could ruin everything.

"Ah, now you're looking keen," Edward said. He'd gotten bored, and so now Anders would have to deal with him setting himself down by that tree. "Lookin' for someone?"

"Keeping an eye out in case anyone from home decides to join me," Anders said, with a slight smile. "I doubt it, but you can't be too careful."

He took another bite of his grapes before continuing, "Hi there. What do you make of the fresh crop so far?"

"They're fresh and a bit confused," Edward said, the great psychological light that he was. "We took it better when we were in their place, I reckon."

"Absolutely. We blended in immediately," Anders said - and considered himself fortunate that he'd managed it without laughing. "But everyone gets it soon enough. They even trusted me with a little brother this time. Travis."

"How's he workin' out for you?" Edward asked, shooting him an interested look.

"He seems like a good sort," Anders answered, shrugging. "You know. As far as I can tell after 15 minutes. Isn't from a world with magic but didn't argue with me about it."

"Is that all one needs to be a good sort these days?" Edward said, teasing. "I'll keep that in mind, then."

"Either that or a willingness to lend me money," Anders said, managing not to laugh. "No, of course there's more to it than tolerance to magic, though that goes a long way. He's nice."

"Mhm," Edward said, flopping back into the grass. "So little brother, yeah? What's that like? You responsible for this tolerant lad now?"

"Perhaps," Anders shrugged. "Whatever he needs, can't be as much as I asked of Eleanor. She took me shopping for clothes our first week."

"Well, if that's necessary, I can get you a good bargain," Edward said. "Four dollars for a shirt, three for a set of trousers."

God, Ed.

"I'm set for now, thank you," Anders said, tilting his head at Edward. "... how did you end up in that line of work?"

"Look at you," Kathy said, sauntering up behind him with a bottle of soda in each hand. She offered one to Anders with a smile. "Feeling all mature now that you're faced with this batch of newbies?"

Don't look now, but Kathy was pretty sure she was actually flirting.

"Completely," Anders said, grinning at her and accepting the soda. "Look at them. All young and fresh and innocent."

Never mind that half of them were older than he was.

"What about you, ready to break some brains?"

"I didn't get big sister duty this year, so I'm brain-breaking free," Kathy said. "I think I'll play it nice and not try to shatter anyone emotionally today. Maybe save it for Monday, when they think they've recovered."

She took a long drink of soda then asked, "You?"

"My new little brother was calm about everything," Anders said, sounding just the slightest bit disappointed. "His world doesn't have magic, but he said he's seen some impossible things lately. I didn't ask what."

He grinned. "Anyhow, there's always something else weird to tell them, isn't there?"

"The gender-swap'll probably get him," Kathy advised, smirking. Look, no one enjoyed those weeks, so taking amusement in someone else's horror over it kind of evened the scales somewhat. "And usually pointing to the squirrels taking notes and drinking rum. Who's your newbie?"

"Don't remind me. I haven't gone through that yet," Anders sighed, with the faintest shudder. He was not looking forward to life as a woman.

He gestured vaguely in Travis' direction. "That one. The tall boy with brown hair. His name's Travis and he said he's from Missouri."

"Fly-over country," Kathy said immediately, because she was from the coast and therefore had Opinions about the middle states. If it helped though, she immediately looked guilty for saying it. "I'm sure he's very nice," she added to make up for it.

"He was," Anders repeated, squinting at her. "Will I sound like an idiot if I ask what fly-over country is?"

"So, the United States is about three thousand miles across. We have machines to fly us around so that we can get from one point to another in just a matter of hours. But fly-over country is that part of the country that is good only to fly over. You don't want to stop and visit. Ride-through might be a similar phrase?"

"Ah."

There didn't seem to be much more to say about that, and Anders didn't try. It was simply a good thing to know.

"Not to totally change the subject, but which classes did you take this time around?"

"Just to totally change the subject," Kathy teased. She wasn't offended, though. And it was nice to tease Anders; nice to have a cute boy she felt comfortable enough being around to tease.

"I'm only taking four classes this semester, because I loaded up on a lot of AP classes with the computer. I'm in Reno's Public Service class, Meditation and the Art of Kicking Ass, Professor Lyman's American History and, uhh..." She turned bright red before mumbling, "Sex and Sexuality."

"You?"

It was nice being teased; Anders went a tiny bit pink and smiled back at Kathy.

"Reno's class as well, Keeping Your Advantage with Professor Atreides, and Creative Writing with Navaan," Anders said, then, mischievously, added, "Sorry, what was that last class you're taking?"
