Doctoring 101 (07/17)

Once again, because Navaan's students were the absolute luckiest, they were meeting in town to catch a portal back to Navaan's world. "I hope you have your bags and your leeches," she announced as soon as they were gathered. "Because today we're going to actually start doctoring! I'm friends with these monks and I take care of them. I even killed a god to keep my little guys safe, so a few ground rules. Rule one: These guys are important to me, so take this very seriously. I want to see everyone's A-games, you got that? Rule two: These are my patients. I'm letting you help them because you're my students, but absolutely no poaching. You can get your own patients on your own time. Rule three: Okay, I forget rule three, but I'm sure it's important and I'll tell you as soon as I remember it. Don't break it anyway, you've been warned."

She glared at the class, making sure that they saw she was very, very serious. "Now, when we get to them, you're each gonna get a monk, you'll diagnose the issue, and then we'll discuss what we think the best treatment is." The portal opened behind her and she gestured her students through. "Oh! Right! I remember Rule Three!"

When the students stepped through the portal, they'd see a brilliant circus under the night sky. Lanterns and torches provided light, there were people teeming everywhere, with barkers crying out games, wares, and sideshows. "The third rule is..." Navaan began as she stepped out from the portal. Then she stopped, staring in fascination at the circus.

"Why didn't anyone tell me this was on?" she asked, before running pell-mell towards the big top. "Let's go, guys! We're going to the circus!"

Half of the fun things offered made Ichabod blush and the other half just made him uncomfortable, so he had bought himself a drink. Which was quite strongly alcoholic, he noticed after a while. Things were slowly turning a lot more funny.

"What're you drinking?" Celia asked, appearing at his elbow. She was still clutching her prize-winning swear word, though she'd let it fall a bit to her side. Maybe she could just vanish it away or something?

"Celia!" Ichabod turned to look at her, a smile on his face. "I don't know, but it's not too bad. What have you been doing?" He didn't notice the swear word, as he couldn't quite stop looking into her eyes. And attempting to focus.

Celia grinned up at him, her brows lifting as she stifled a giggle. "Um, I've been...playing games. The wheel-spinny thing." She gestured vaguely to the attraction in question, still discreetly keeping her prize at her side. "I won. Is there liquor in that?"

That was mostly rhetorical, because of course there was liquor in that, and she was debating with herself whether to tell him how cute he was while tipsy.

Ichabod grinned back. "You won? Was there a price? And yes, there is, a little more than I expected perhaps."

He glanced in the direction Celia was gesturing, then looked back at her. "I didn't notice the wheel. Most of the amusements seemed a little..." He was struggling to find the right word here.

"Uncouth?" Celia offered. "Disgusting? Possibly-diseased?"

She could come up with quite a few words, it turned out.

"It's Navaan's world, sweetheart, what were you expecting?" She peeked in his cup, adding, "Who else would have a class in which getting drunk is an option?"

"Something like that," Ichabod agreed, then frowned. "Wait, are you saying that I'm drunk?"

"No, but the option to be is there," she said, quirking a brow at him in amusement. "You just seem a bit...tipsy. How do you feel?"

"I'm... fine." He smiled at Celia. "What's that?" What better way to change the topic than to point at the thing in her hand?

Celia made a face, blushing as she held out the plush 'fuckninny' for him to see. "It's my prize. I don't even know what it means."

Pause.

"I mean, I know both those words, but not in that combination." Because that made it better.

"Fuckninny?" Ichabod let out a small laugh, very close to a giggle. He looked at Celia, nudging her with his elbow. "What did you have to do to win this? Just a lucky spin?"

"Language, Ichabod," she giggled, "And...well, yes, it was a lucky spin. But you know me. It might have been a touch luckier than the average spin."

Because she was a huge cheater, always.

"But it's not like I wanted to win this stupid thing. Though I suppose I should be pleased to have learned a new word." Now to find someone who deserved to be called a fuckninny.

...other than their teacher.

But that meant there was an obvious solution. "Perhaps you should offer it as a gift to our beloved teacher, as a token of your respect and appreciation."

[And I should have been in bed an hour ago!

"...has anyone ever told you that you're brilliant?"

Because seriously. She'd have to hang onto it for another week, but that was absolutely who should ultimately receive her stupid prize.

"Well, perhaps once or twice," Ichabod said, nudging her with an amused look on his face.
