Philosophy of Food, Friday period 3

Hannibal was not having class on the beach today; some of the students were just going to have to sit in a classroom. Sorry, folks; sand wasn't an intrinsic part of anybody's diet that he was aware of.

He leaned up against the desk, which had a number of covered dishes on it, and watched them all file in. When everybody was seated, he smiled, nodded, and began.

"Good afternoon. I am Dr. Lecter; this is The Philosophy of Food." He passed out a syllabus. "I see some familiar faces. For those of you who haven't had a class with me before, I welcome you to sit in the desks as they are, or to move them, or to sit on the floor or walk about - whatever you are most comfortable with, so long as you can hear and see me and you pay attention."

He waved at the syllabus. "As you can see, there will be a final project, no exams or quizzes. You will not need to take any notes, although you may do so if you choose. Most of your grade will be based upon your participation." He indicated the food. "This does not mean you have to eat everything. You may choose to eat or refuse anything I offer. You may choose to eat none of it; while I might be disappointed, it will in no way affect your grade. However, you must have opinions and speak them; possibly be prepared to defend them." He waited a moment to make sure they got it, then nodded.

"Apart from that, I have only one rule for this class – no judging. There will undoubtedly be things you do not think of as edible, or that you may have a cultural or religious bias against. There may be practices in the raising or creation of food which you may find objectionable. I expect you to say just that, and to be prepared to explain why. There will be no use of the term 'disgusting', no 'ew's or 'gross'es." He frowned. "That will affect your grade if I hear it. What you think is disgusting may be another person's delicacy. We are here to discuss our opinions, not offend others." That would be rude.

"Introductions are traditional for our first day, so we will begin there; they do serve a further purpose in this class which is quite important. Please tell me your name, and any allergies – food or otherwise – and dietary restrictions you may have. It is my goal to make you think about your food and to expand your horizons, not to kill you from anaphylaxis." Though he did have medicine just in case; he'd never lost a student unintentionally yet, and had no plans of starting now.

"We save all our adventure for being terrified of Russia and nuclear war," Raven said. She took a tentative bit of one of the tarantulas and chewed thoughtfully. ". . . It tastes like crunchy fried thing."

This was pretty much true about most fried foods, really.

It really was. "Well, at least it's not unpleasant. Although I hope I can teach you to appreciate the subtle differences," Hannibal answered. "So, the United States somewhere between the nineteen-fifties and nineteen-eighties, then? Toward the early end of that, from the sound of your cuisine."

"1954," Raven said. "New York suburbs. Which mostly means that my family can afford the really fancy boring pot roasts."

Hannibal chuckled. "Oh, dear." And then, because he was completely evil couldn't resist, "Perhaps we shouldn't keep this all to ourselves then. You're welcome to send some leftovers home to your brother. Rescue him from all that boring food."

Raven grinned a little evilly. "I think that's a lovely idea. I've been trying not to hog all of the wonderful future things I find to myself, after all."

Hence the Katy Perry she'd hunted down on vinyl.

Oh, Hannibal liked her! "I will make you a suitable care package," he promised. "Extra tarantulas, do you think?"

"Definitely," Raven said. "And maybe some other buggy delicacies. I've heard chocolate covered grasshoppers can be popular."

Hannibal laughed. "I haven't made any of those, but I believe you should be able to buy them online. I'll see what I can do."

Her brother was really going to loathe the fact she was taking his class.

The best part was that he usually was the one who chose her classes.

"Excellent. I think I'm going to like this class."

"I sincerely hope you will," Hannibal answered with a serious bow and a very mischievous glint in his eyes.
