Philosophy of Food, Friday period 3

Hannibal was not having class on the beach today; some of the students were just going to have to sit in a classroom. Sorry, folks; sand wasn't an intrinsic part of anybody's diet that he was aware of.

He leaned up against the desk, which had a number of covered dishes on it, and watched them all file in. When everybody was seated, he smiled, nodded, and began.

"Good afternoon. I am Dr. Lecter; this is The Philosophy of Food." He passed out a syllabus. "I see some familiar faces. For those of you who haven't had a class with me before, I welcome you to sit in the desks as they are, or to move them, or to sit on the floor or walk about - whatever you are most comfortable with, so long as you can hear and see me and you pay attention."

He waved at the syllabus. "As you can see, there will be a final project, no exams or quizzes. You will not need to take any notes, although you may do so if you choose. Most of your grade will be based upon your participation." He indicated the food. "This does not mean you have to eat everything. You may choose to eat or refuse anything I offer. You may choose to eat none of it; while I might be disappointed, it will in no way affect your grade. However, you must have opinions and speak them; possibly be prepared to defend them." He waited a moment to make sure they got it, then nodded.

"Apart from that, I have only one rule for this class – no judging. There will undoubtedly be things you do not think of as edible, or that you may have a cultural or religious bias against. There may be practices in the raising or creation of food which you may find objectionable. I expect you to say just that, and to be prepared to explain why. There will be no use of the term 'disgusting', no 'ew's or 'gross'es." He frowned. "That will affect your grade if I hear it. What you think is disgusting may be another person's delicacy. We are here to discuss our opinions, not offend others." That would be rude.

"Introductions are traditional for our first day, so we will begin there; they do serve a further purpose in this class which is quite important. Please tell me your name, and any allergies – food or otherwise – and dietary restrictions you may have. It is my goal to make you think about your food and to expand your horizons, not to kill you from anaphylaxis." Though he did have medicine just in case; he'd never lost a student unintentionally yet, and had no plans of starting now.

Ready to discover new foods!

Introduce yourself!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2014-07-04 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Name, allergies, and any objections to foods.

Eat Hannibal's food and discuss it!

Once everyone's introduced, he'll take the covers off all this.

"Everything here is considered food by someone, and inedible by someone else. Taste whatever you like and offer us your opinions. Do you consider these things food or not food? More importantly, why?"

Talk to Hannibal!

He'll listen! Also, he has no TA, if someone wants to volunteer.

OOC!

"Um, hi," Kira said brightly. "My name is Kira, and I don't have any food allergies, or any kind of allergies really. And I'll eat pretty much anything. I'm half Japanese and half Korean so... yeah, I've seen some weird stuff come out of the kitchen."
justwantedfriends: ([yay] this is pleasing)

Kira wanted to be a good student, she really did. So, after trying some of the cheese with the durian fruit, she grabbed one of the tarantulas, closed her eyes, and took a bite. "Oh, that's a lot more like chicken than I thought it'd be," she said.

"Nathan. No allergies, no objections. Not that I've found anyway," Nathan said, short and to the point.

Nathan didn't recognize any of the food save for the Big Mac. So, that's what he went for just to save his stomach. The hamburger was greasy but actually not too bad.

"It's food," he finally said. "It's cheap food and not something I'd eat a lot of but in a pinch, it's food."

"Welcome, Kira." Hannibal nodded to her. "My aunt is Japanese, so I am familiar with that cuisine. We may see some of it later on."

"Very good." Hannibal smiled. "Hopefully we won't find any new ones."
shippedtomaine: (Welp that's taken care of.)

"Emma Swan, still no allergies that I know of." Very few objections either.

An adventurous student! Hannibal liked her already.

He chuckled. "And now you discover two of the principles at work with food: one, that we have a tendency to relate to new things as they are similar or different to what we know; and two, that our eyes can be as important a part of food as our taste buds."

"And that is one instance in which we differ," Hannibal noted somewhat dryly. "I would consider it to be barely edible, and certainly not something I would class as food. I find it to have little flavor and no presentation to speak of. However," he acknowledged, "if I had nothing else, it would certainly be preferable to starving." Barely.

"Another of the considerations behind what we think of as food is how hungry we are," he pointed out. "Something we wouldn't consider at one time may be perfectly acceptable at another."

"It's good to see you again, Emma," Hannibal said, smiling. He knew who was in his class for the food.

Oh, this was possibly the most easy introductory class yet. Evan smiled a little as he introduced himself.

"I'm Evan Sabahnur. I have no food allergies at all, and there's really nothing I'm opposed to trying. I can always use new experiences."

Lacking in life experience? Evan? Heck yes.

Re: Introduce yourself!

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2014-07-04 05:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"Evan." Hannibal nodded. "It's good to hear that; I hope you find some new things to enjoy here."

He eyed Evan mildly. "You were the young boy dating Sholeh, yes?" He was probably lucky the girls had gone home before he took this class.

[identity profile] halfbad.livejournal.com 2014-07-04 05:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"I wouldn't eat it if I had the choice but it'd keep you from starving, yeah," Nathan agreed. "It's probably not real meat in here anyway."

Evan gave a little nod at that, his cheeks tinting pink slightly and his eyes dropping to his knees.

"That would be me, yeah," he agreed. "She's gone home since, but I suppose you knew that..."

Hence the past-tense.

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2014-07-04 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"On that we can agree," Hannibal answered with a chuckle. "What about the other things here?" he asked. "Would you choose to eat them if you were starving? What would be the deciding factor?"

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2014-07-04 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"I do." Hannibal nodded. "Her sister Zhari was in several of my classes, and was one of my TAs."
