The Library is Open (02/23)

After teaching first period, Rory toddled sleepily into the library and began sorting books for reshelving.

And occasionally pulling her arm in and out of her socket, just to see what would happen.

The library is here, and the aides are happy to help. Okay, happyish. Whatever.

"Oh my god, you're a zombie," John says, jaw agape. "Who zombified you?"

"I'm not a zombie. But aparently I'm a walking Mrs. Potato head, or something," Rory frowned.

"I must've snorted some chocolate milk powder this morning," John says. "Snorted the chocolatey goodness and now I'm hallucinating."

"Want to hold the arm? You're not hallucinating," Rory replied.

"Ew, no!" John jumps away and holds up to his hands. "That's your arm, Rory. If I'm holding it, it better be attached to your shoulder which better be attached to your neck which better have a head on top of it!"

"Look," Rory said calmly, reattaching her arm. "See? It's fine."

"You just reattached your arm," John says, pointing. "That is not fine. That's not natural. Arms don't just come off, see?"

And, with that, John yanks on his own arm to demonstrate. His does not come off.

"Yeah, I don't know why it's doing that. But it doesn't hurt," Rory shrugged.

"This newfound ability doesn't concern you? I mean, what if you take off your arm, some nefarious person grabs it and runs away with it? Then you have no arm for real!"

"I just won't take my arm off around nefarious people, then."

"How can you be so calm about this?"

"I've been dealing with it since last night," Rory replied.

"Have you tried duct tape?" John blurts out.

"No. Not yet. They don't just fall off, unless I'm not paying attention. See?"

She held up both hands to show her arms were attached.

John is very thankful to see her limbs still attached.

"And it doesn't hurt? At all? Can you feel anything when it happens? Weird sensations?"

"Tingly," Rory said, tugging off her arm and using it to reach her coffee cup.

"UNNATURAL!" John yelps and jumps back. "Do you...want your limbs to stay detachable?"

"I don't know. It's kind of neat," Rory replied, reattaching her arm.

John makes a disclaimer in his head: John is a guy. John thinks about certain things a lot. This next thing out of his mouth is one such thing. Hitting him is not allowed.

Of course, he probably should say that out loud.

"But...what if you're kissing 'some guy' and your arm comes off in mid kiss and falls in his lap or slaps his face or hits something even more sensitive?"

"I'm not kissing anyone these days," Rory said carefully. "But if I was kissing someone, I don't think my arm would slap him. Though it did randomly hit Alex and Bridgey last night."

"I know you're not which is why I said some guy," John says slowly. "But, what if some random guy reaches out to take your hand and it just comes off? And then you're standing there without an arm and he's holding some random arm and people are looking at you funny and the old lady in the corner is dialing 911 and little kids are pointing and thinking you're a monster!"

"No, it wouldn't just come off like that," Rory insisted. "If I concentrate, I can hold them in place. They just fall off if I'm not paying attention."

John looks at her oddly. "Anything falls off? Like...anything?"

"Just my arms and legs," Rory clarified.

"That's comforting," John says and nods. "Because seeing your head come off? Yeah, I'd have to commit myself to an insane asylum."
