Advanced Film Criticism, Monday, Period 1

"Hey, congrats, you figured out how to come to the same place two weeks in a row. Now, just so you think you're not going to learn anything in this class besides an appreciation for stupid things, you're getting a pop quiz," James said. "That there's a real old timey popcorn cart. Figure out how to make me some popcorn and then make me some popcorn. The manual's there, and I'm pretty sure everything you need is too. We're starting the movie now, but you don't get to watch until there's a tub of popcorn in these beautiful hands of mine."

"Oh, and today's movie is Bel-Air Yorkshire Terrier, which is terrible, probably offensive to English people, and definitely offensive to my ears. Also, get that popcorn done fast because eventually they try to make one of the girl dogs the 'sexy' girl dog and I want to make sure that stuff's digested before I feel like retching."

Flick could do popcorn even if he wasn't very hungry. He'd just have to focus long enough not to burn the stuff.

Raven had the manual out. She was mostly using it to fan herself.

"Why didn't he just use microwave popcorn? Even I've heard of microwave popcorn."

Not that she'd made it. She was still a little bit afraid of the microwave.

Joker flipped through the manual, and then made some popcorn. It wasn't all that hard. He gave a tub to James and kept a tub for himself, and smiled as he thought about how he was NOT going to be cleaning up that cart.

A pampered Beverly Hills chihuahua named Chloe (voiced by Drew Barrymore) who, while on vacation in Mexico with her owner Viv's (Jamie Lee Curtis) niece, Rachel (Piper Perabo), gets lost and must rely on her friends to help her get back home before she is caught by a dognapper who wants to ransom her. In the meantime, Papi (voiced by George Lopez), a male chihuahua who is in love with her is in pursuit of her. Papi's master (Manolo Cardona), a handsome young gardener for Viv, slowly develops a romantic interest in Rachel. Chloe befriends a lonely German Shepherd (voiced by Andy Garcia) who travels with her to protect her from the evil Doberman (voiced by Edward James Olmos) who wants to return her and her diamond collar to the dognapper.

Flick did not want to watch a movie about dogs. He really didn't but apparently that's what he was going to be doing right now. The popcorn didn't even help this movie.

Congratulations, future. You've managed to take a perfectly nice, cute little movie concept -- anthropomorphic dogs -- and make it horrifying.

Raven was on her phone. Don't worry, she had it turned to silent.

Isabelle didn't think she could be blamed if most of her attention ended up being on eyeing her classmates rather than on watching the movie.

Flick's review was totally non-verbal. All he did was bang his head against his desk and roll his eyes. Totally accurate review of that movie.

I've actually usually heard that BHC isn't as bad as you'd think. On the other hand, I think it would be just REALLY horrible, falling short of that target isn't necessarily something to brag about. You can still be pretty damn horrible while missing my prediction.
