Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Was the person she was looking for perhaps the one who sidled up to her and bumped her shoulder with his own?

"Hey."

Might've been.

Which was to say that Vider flung her arms around him, exclaiming, "Soren!"

Soren laughed. "It's good to see you too," he replied, hugging back.

When Vider pulled back from the hug, it was only to grasp Soren by the arms, look him in the eye, and say, as one imparting great wisdom, "Good luck with the calendar." And then she realized: "Oh, Hel-spawn, Disir's Day was yesterday, wasn't it?"

"My 'sibling' Celia has promised to get me one," Soren informed her. "You forgot? Vider," he chastised, though with no real heat behind it.

"I'm living on their crazy calendar!" Vider protested. "What is a May even supposed to be, anyway? And! I lost a week somehow, coming back from Baldur's Feast. Something with the portals." This was clearly not her fault. Clearly. "Besides, I don't think we're allowed to sacrifice cats here."

"But then how are you supposed to make an offering to the goddesses?" he'd never done much for Disir's Day in the past, beyond lighting a candle and praying not to fall victim to what he'd viewed as a curse, but things were different now. He couldn't actually explain any of that to Vider, though, as mentioning Astrid would only confuse her.

Vider sort of flung her hands up. "I don't know! I missed it anyway, so I'll worry about that next year." She was practical that way. "So, let's see, what do you need to know?" She could hardly remember what she'd managed to tell him last time. Had she told him about Loki and Thor? Surely she'd told him about Loki and Thor. (Oops.) "No one understands about the berserker's mark, and even when you explain it no one cares. And there's no holmgang here, so just forget about worrying about that."

"I told my roommate," Soren said with a nod. "He didn't care, like you said." Well, more accurately, he and Nathan had mutually agreed to not care about things about each other that would rightfully have concerned anyone from their home worlds.

"Told you," Vider said, sounding smug.

Well, that was just practical, what with them sharing a space neither of them would be sleeping in and all.

"How are arguments settled, then?" Soren wondered. "Debate?"

"Mostly. They don't have a formal system I can see until you get to lawbreaking, and then it's trial by jury only, apparently." So weird! "Oh, the trolls, you need to know about the trolls. There are trolls in the dorms, but they don't kill anyone, they just make people hallucinate. I've been making offerings and so far it's been all right." Apparently you could get used to living in terror, though, because she was completely breezy while telling him about the trolls in the dorms. "They call them gremlins here."
