Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Yeah, we'll this place is pretty fucking strand from what I've heard so I thought I'd check to make sure." Barry said with a shrug. "So are you related to Earth at all or are you a full blown visitor to this planet?"

"Full-blown visitor," Alana said. "There's got to be some common ancestor somewhere, but that's for people way better at science than I am to figure out."

"Well, I could do some genetic tests but that might seem extreme," Barry said with a shrug. "And you seem nicer than the other alien races I've had contact with so there's probably no reason to go there."

"Probably not," Alana agreed, giving him the slightest side-eye. "Do you meet a lot of alien races?"

She was guessing not. Landfallians were nice, but not THAT nice.

"Quite a few," Barry noted. "They generally fall into three categories. Anthropologists, drunk cow tippers or invaders."

He shifted a bit as though uncomfortable with a certain memory.

"The first two are a bit free in the use of anal probes."

"Ew," Alana noted. "Trust me, I've got exactly no interest in tipping cows or in probing."

A pause. "Unless I really liked the guy, but that's .. probably not what you're talking about."

Barry blinked and then blushed horribly red.

"Er. No. Um. Nope! And I didn't think you were..."

Oh, God throw the boy a lifeline.

Alana broke down laughing. "I swear, Earth boys are so easy to freak out. Don't worry. I come in peace, all of that. Anuses are safe around me."

Barry let out a awkward laugh and facepalmed. "No. Sorry. You're fine. Second time today I said something remotely... innuendoish. Totally unintentional."

Quick think of another topic, Barry.

"So what brought you to the island other than the promise of freaking out Earth boys?"

"The usual," Alana said. "Dad married a 20-year-old. Seemed like time to be someplace else. I've been here since September. You?"

"That fucking blows," Barry said sympathetically. "As for me I got tired of hiding my experiments from the government and endangering my friends. Seemed easier to move to a place where weird shit happened all the time."

"I mean, she's a really nice 20-year-old," Alana explained, feeling vaguely loyal to Even. "I went to camp with her and we were friends then and stuff. Just -- I wanted to get out of town while he had his midlife crisis, and this school seemed to be way out of town."

She added thoughtfully, "How'd you know about the weird stuff here? Most of us came in blind."

Barry pondered the idea of Jeremy dating his Mom and was immediately repulsed by the idea. Yeah. He'd have left too.

"Oh, I had caught a couple of the podcasts from your radio station using my transdimensional scanner," Barry said in an offhand manner. "This place sounded pretty fucking strange and realized it'd be a good place to work and not gather any attention."

"Okay, now I'm impressed you could build a transdimensional scanner," Alana decided. "We don't have that at home yet, and we're pretty freaking advanced compared to this place."

A pause. "And you were right. Pretty much everyone blends in here."

"Well I'm weird," Barry admitted. "I've been building shit since I was eight months old."

And after another pause.

"I'm a bit of an overachiever "

Alana arched an eyebrow. "Mashing bananas into your hair counts as building now?"

Barry chuckled. "Nah. I built a space telescope from a camcorder and an Atari 2600 when I was 8months old. Like I said. Weird"

"Must have freaked your parents out," Alana said. She still wasn't sure she totally believed him, but wasn't inclined to argue.

"Nah. They don't have a fucking clue," Barry said shaking his head. "I figured out if they knew they turn me over to doctors and such and I'd end up being a lab rat freak. So I've been working in secret and have been keeping them in the dark."

"And they never noticed their stuff went missing?" Alana asked skeptically.

"No, eventually I was able to make money off my own discoveries so I didn't use stuff around the house," Barry said with a shrug. "I set up a lab and hid it from my parents. Once I get a lab set up here, feel free to drop by and check it out."
