Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Joker sat himself down at a table near the food, right where all the action was. He smiled and waved to people, ready to make all kinds of scintillating conversation.

Even with someone he already knew?

"Hey there," Kathy said, leaning against the table next to him. "I see you've got a little sibling of your own this round. Have you tried to explain anything yet?"

Of course!

"Well, hey, yourself! Yeah, I explained some of it, although he's a little overwhelmed. At least he didn't try to tell his big sib that he was crazy, like some people did. Man, those guys who don't believe in Fandom right off the bat and get all weird about it are the worst, aren't they?" He gave her a grin.

"Completely unreasonable," Kathy agreed, making a face. "And then the minute the littlest thing happens, they come crying to you about how they were so wrong."

The expression dissolved into giggles a second later. "Don't even worry about it. I called my big sibling a liar, I think. Or, well, implied it pretty heavily."

Because she never would have just come out and said it like that.

Joker grinned back. "Yeah, well, you know how it goes. Now I'm older, I'm wiser, and it's time to pass that on to others. ...Does that make Four your grand-sib? That just sounds wrong. You're too young and pretty to be a grand-anything."

Kathy laughed, blushing a little bit. Flirting, even harmless flirting, was still pretty new to her. "I'm just so proud my little baby sib is off having siblings of his own!" She sniffled and pretended to wipe a tear from her eye. "So, if this Four is my grandsib, then you have a regular new sibling to watch out for. Her name is Alex and she's from 1996!"

Yeah, to Kathy, that was almost as hard to imagine as it was for you, Joker. The nineties, man. Back when they had CDs and dial-up internet. The Dark Ages, made all the more terrifying for being so relatively recent.

Joker didn't find the idea of 1996 any more hard to imagine than 2014 -- but that was just because he didn't remember his history. "Oooh, I'll watch out for her, then. So... what makes 1996 so bad?"

"It's not bad, exactly?" Kathy said with a shrug. "It's just...okay, how to put this?" She paused, trying to figure out why she was so unsettled. "So the people who are from the 19th Century are obviously out of their time. Everything about them is different, from technology to social mores. You look at a picture of a street from 1814 and 2014 and it's painfully obvious that they're different times. But 1996 is pretty close to us, timewise, it's hard to see the difference in a picture. But...the technology it used is still really obsolete. It's only a twenty year time gap, but that twenty years was huge. So it's both just familiar enough and not familiar at all. It's like the uncanny valley, but about a time period."

"Well, but technology goes obsolete pretty quickly," Joker countered. "I mean, in a general sense. Stuff from twenty years ago is always bigger, clunkier, less impressive. I mean, it's not like there was some groundbreaking, paradigm-shifting technology that... ohhhh, shit, when was the Internet?!"

"That's what I asked!" Kathy said, glad he was getting it. "I guess right around 1996 is when it went public. But even then, it didn't really get to be mainstream the way it is now until the turn of the millennium. This is before wifi! Like, you needed a phone with AOL or something! Hotmail is still relevant!"
