Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Rapunzel had never seen so much food in her life -- and she didn't recognize a lot of it, either. She had a plate piled high with fruit she knew and snacks she didn't, and had found herself a spot to sit on the ground under a tree, neatly pooling her hair in concentric circles around herself.

She could people-watch easily from here. Today was very strange, so far.

[I forgot to mention this in my infopost, but since Rapunzel is a fairy tale and those are fair game, your characters can absolutely recognize her from her hair and/or name!]

"Um, hi," Rapunzel said, waving at the boy who'd spoken.

She was pretty sure this had to do with her hair, and she was prepared to try to outrun him if he was trying to get it or something.

He only did that once! And he was relative certain it had worked out for the Lady Sif in the end.

"Hello," he replied, looking up from the massive amount of hair.

"I'm growing it out," she offered as an explanation, because she was getting really, really used to people asking about her hair, and she needed a good cover story to run with.

Rapunzel eyed him, since she'd studied mythology up in that tower of hers. "I'm Rapunzel. It's really nice to meet you, Loki. Are you a new student, too?"

She was still adjusting to the idea that she was.

"Oh, good," Rapunzel said, beaming at him. "No one's said anything about the school itself so far. Everyone's just been really nice and explaining that I've tame-travled and stuff. I don't know anything about the curriculum."

"Nothing so far, but the day is young," she said with a self-conscious laugh. "I mean, I don't know how to top the giant metal bird things yet, anyway. How're you holding up?"

"Fucking great!" Barry exclaimed. "There's a fucking dinosaur here and a giant dog-bear hybrid! I can't wait to set up my lab and try to generate these types of things. My roommates a bit of a tool though."

Rapunzel's eyebrows rose at his language, but she was just going to let it go. She knew that was a bad word, but she hadn't had enough exposure to it to really be aghast at its usage. "A dinosaur?" she repeated. "And what's wrong with your roommate? Mine's really nice! I've never had someone to share my room before!"

"Eh, he got all bent out of shape when I tried to earn him about my experiments," Barry said with a grimace, "But if he can't listen that's his fucking problem. Glad to hear you ended up with someone nice and not someone nasty or weird."

"Wait, what kind of experiments?" Rapunzel asked, suddenly worried. She didn't think this was like when she did her little kitchen chemistry projects with baking soda, somehow.

"Oh, physics, genetics, dimensional portals, chemistry, nuclear power" Barry said trying to wave it off as no big deal. That kind of shit. Why? Do you do that kind of stuff?"

Might explain all that hair.

"A...little," Rapunzel said slowly. "I'm not much of a scientist in practicality -- I've done some work with chemistry, and a lot with astronomy. I don't get out much, though, so I do a lot of reading, at least." She cleared her throat, and added, "You sound a little more advanced than what I've dabbled in, though."

To say the least.

So, so sorry about this Rapunzel, but Kathy was also stopping to look at all that hair.

Mrs. Pak back home had a picture of her from right after the war with hair all the way down to her ankles, but even that was nothing compared to the lengths that this girl had.

"Wow!" Kathy said, blinking. "Your hair!"

And then she internally facepalmed, because that was probably the dumbest thing in the world to say.

"I mean, umm, hi?"

Rapunzel so, so should have thought of a catchy, snappy comeback for when people said something about her hair. Like, that should have been her first priority, once she'd decided to leave her tower.

Too late now. She'd just have to keep winging it.

"Yeah," she said, shrugging bashfully. "I mean, I kinda...have just always kept it long. Hi, though!"

"It's beautiful," Kathy said, still feeling awkward. "Sorry, I bet you hear that all the time. I've just never seen someone with hair as long as you have. Are you trying for a world record or something?"

Of course, she immediately thought of the fairy tale, but decided not to mention that. The poor girl probably got Rapunzel jokes all the time.

"Not on purpose," Rapunzel said thoughtfully, "though I bet I probably have it. I, um, kind of try to keep out of the public eye, mostly, so...no, I'm not trying for a world record." It was okay to be awkward, Kathy. She was too.

"Are you new, too? I just got here today."

Yeah, but at least Rapunzel had an excuse, living in a tower away from people her whole life. Kathy was from L.A., the hub of glamorous people.

"Who me?" Yes, you, Kathy. Great job. "Oh no. I've been here for almost a year now. I've had two little sibs and everything."

So, see, Kathy, she hadn't heard the jokes. Because they hadn't been invented yet. It was pretty meta.

Rapunzel looked puzzled. "I don't think so," she said carefully. "I mean, I've had my name my whole life, and my hair wasn't anywhere near this long when I was a baby...so...I don't think it's related?"

That was weird. Maybe her name meant 'hair' in another language she didn't know about, or something. Wouldn't that be crazy?
