Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Well, if Andros was going to attempt to talk to people, the guy whose name he'd almost hijacked was as good a place to start as any, right?

"Hi," Andros said tentatively. "I almost wound up with your nametag, sorry."

"You know, I looked at yours too," Anders admitted with a little laugh. "What are the odds there would be two of us with names only one letter apart?"

Not that Anders was exactly his real name, but he had no intention of bringing that up.

"And it's not like it's a large group!" Andros exclaimed. "This could get confusing, if we're in any of the same classes."

"Classes?" Anders repeated, momentarily derailed from the topic of their almost-shared name. "I -- well, I suppose it makes sense. If this is school there should be classes. But I hadn't thought that far."

"I'm just assuming there'll be classes," Andros admitted. "I don't really know how they do things here. It could be all...computers or something. Self-directed learning." He shrugged. He knew practically nothing about this world.

"I guess we'll both find out," Anders said. He had no idea what a computer was, but he'd heard so many words he didn't understand that they were all blending together. "I've got no idea how they do things here either, but it's bound to be better than where I was."

"Is it the war?" Andros asked, sympathetic. "We had to evacuate, at home."

"No, luckily we aren't at war right now," Anders said, in a tone that suggested that was temporary. "I, er, came to a parting of the ways with the Circle of Magi."

"Oh," Andros said. "Is that good?" He didn't know what it was, so he really couldn't say.

"For me, very good," Anders answered. "We'd never see a feast like this in the Circle, not even on Summerday. I've been on plain meat and bread for years, can you imagine?"

"No," Andros admitted, "I'm afraid I can't. At home we have Synthetrons; they can make whatever you want, if you program them right."

Anders squinted at him. "What is that, like a personal chef?"

"Kind of," Andros said. "It's a machine." Welcome to the wonderful world of technology, Anders.

"There are machines that can cook?"

Anders couldn't even imagine such a thing. He sounded fascinated.

"Are you sure you aren't pulling my leg?"

"I'm definitely not," Andros said, confused. Maybe someone else was using telekinesis on Anders' leg, but it wasn't him. "And yes, there are. I don't know if they use them here or not, though, I think Earth is pretty--" primitive would be unpolite. "--uh. They're playing catch up."
