Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Ah," Edward said as he took a swig of water from his pitcher. "That would be what roused my curiosity."

Lies. She was a pretty girl who seemed to have no shyness about her; that's about what did it.

That was about what Isabelle figured, too, and she didn't mind it one bit, either. She was very pretty, it tended to get her some attention.

"Well, I don't know if I have a specific purpose today. Just enjoying a beautiful day and checking out the newcomers."

Edward made a show of looking about himself. "So how are we faring?" he said. "Besides some of our number looking confused and out of our element, poor sods."

He was also confused and out of his element, but he'd passed the willingness to let on. It was a beautiful day, for all that, and he couldn't say he hated being out of earshot for whatever tirade his father was no doubt cooking up.

"Everyone who isn't looking confused or out of their element just has a very good poker face," Isabelle retorted. Because she knew how it worked. But it was cheerful teasing, for the most part. "Or they knew someone here before coming."

Like she had.

"Anyway, so far? New crop's looking average. Some interesting, some less so."

Edward leaned forward with a smirk and a raise of his eyebrow. "Where do I find myself in this appraisal?" he said. "A woman like you's got a good eye, I reckon."

"Of course, but it's still too early to tell," Isabelle replied, shaking her head. "But, I did come over here, didn't I?"

"So you did," Edward said, and spread his arms. "Welcome to my little patch of land, then. I can offer you water and conversation, should you wish it."

Isabelle raised her eyebrows in an exaggerated manner. "Hey now, you're the new kid, I don't think you get to welcome me to any part of the island!"

She'd had two brothers here and everything, clearly that meant she owned the place.

"That said," she added, as she moved to gracefully take a seat on the ground next to him, "I'll pass on the water but I guess I can indulge in some conversation."

"Excellent," Edward said, offering her a cheeky grin. "And here I'd feared I'd have to get on my knees and beg for your time."

Not that he would've minded. Much. As long as he could've made a production out of it.

"You're a veteran then, of sorts."

"Aww, don't make me sad." She liked boys begging her for things, what could she say? "But yes, I've been here for the better part of a year. And before that, my brothers were here, so I knew what I was getting into."

"Always a good thing," Edward said, though he made note of the were here - always good to know one was not at risk of getting manhandled by angry brothers trying to save their sister's honor or some such rot. "But am I making you sad? I'll have to come up with a way to brighten your spirits quick, then."

Ahaha. The person he was most at risk of getting manhandled by was sitting right next to him.

Making a really theatrical gesture of sorrow by casting her eyes skyward and bringing the back of her hand to touch her forehead. "Yes, my sadness is deep."

Edward looked terribly amused. "Shall I get the lady something for her troubles, then?"

Isabelle, still keeping up her tragic pose, closed her eyes – then snuck one open for a glance at him.

"You could fetch me some cake."

"All right," Edward said, clapping his hands before hopping to his feet. "The lady wants some cake." He made an exaggerated bow. "I'll be back in a moment," he said, then turned towards the food.

And Isabelle was totally leering as he did.

What? Checking people out was the only reason she had for even being here!

That just meant that what Edward was doing was working!

Not that he was surprised by that.

He arrived with a piece of cake on a plate. "Dry your eyes," he said.

"Okay."

See, she was easy. She reached out for the plate.

"I was always told I shouldn't take food from strangers ––" Actually, she'd been told not to take food from fair folk, and he wasn't one of them, but that was beside the point. "–– so now would be a great time to introduce yourself."

Edward sank back into his previous seat and grinned. "Edward Kenway," he offered. "And yourself?"

"Isabelle Lightwood," she replied with an easy smile of her own. "A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Mr. Kenway."

"Is this where we argue about whose pleasure it is the most?" Edward asked.

"No, because I win every argument I get into," Isabelle quipped. "Also... Yours, clearly."

Girl had a healthy ego on her.

"Oh, now I'd love to hear your argument for that," Edward said, grin on his face making it clear he was charmed already.

She had that effect on people. Who were willing to be charmed by smiley cockiness.

"Oh, I don't know," she teased, getting started on the cake. "I think all my excellent qualities are hard to put into words."

"We'll have to meet up some time again," Edward suggested. "Once you've had time to think of some."
