Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Throughout the lawn, tables and chairs had been set up and scattered, some out in the bright, sunny center of everything, and some in the darker, more remote areas.

Eat up, folks! Don't let that food go to waste!

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Was Chuck scowling? Of course Chuck was scowling.

He thought he'd have been out of here by now.

So yes, mister Sunshine had sat down somewhere at the fringes with a plate and openly scowled at everyone in general.

Four was used to scowling. Four was slightly comforted by scowling.

That's why he and his mostly empty plate were finding a spot sort of near this guy (but not too close) to loiter a bit awkwardly.

Chuck's eyes darted furtively towards Four.

After a moment or so, he decided to acknowledge the man's presence with a manly chin-lift and leave it at that.

Four nodded gravely back at him, then took a bite of his cake. "You weren't on the bus," he finally offered. "Have you been here a while?"

Well, at least if someone was going to bother him, this was the least annoying way to do it. Chuck didn't stop scowling, however, but he did answer. "A semester," he said, "A very useless one. Welcome to the island of time-wasters."

"It's that bad?" Four replied, looking slightly disappointed.

"I don't know about you, mate," Chuck said, sitting forward, "But I was sent here while training for something much more important. Instead I'm sitting in on classes about bloody nothing of any importance."

"I finished my training," Four said. "I'd rather be here than doing politics, which was the option they offered me. What were you learning?"

"Fighting Kaiju," Chuck said. Then, to show he had learned at least something about the island, "They're giant lizards, tearing apart my home Earth. So you can imagine why I thought there was some urgency."

Four blinked. "Well, yes. Why are you still here?"

Chuck rolled his eyes. "Because they won't let me come back to finish the program until I've done my time here," he said. "It's idiotic."

Four made a face. "It is," he agreed. "Are there at least places to train here? Run? Shoot? Climb?"

Not that Four was a big fan of climbing.

Four should be happy nobody asked him to get up in a Jaeger.

"There's the salle and a shooting range on the grounds," Chuck said. "They're crap compared to the professional stuff, but they're there."

Wow, don't overdo the praise there, Hansen.

"I'm not exactly used to the professional stuff," Four said. "We make do with what we've got. I'm sure whatever is here will be sufficient."
