Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Four was after the list with a magic marker again, carefully writing "Four" next to Cecil's name.

So there. Problem fixed.

Cecil squinted at the list, blinked at the magic marker, and shrugged. "Four?" he called loudly, looking around. Foucault honked in assistance and also looked around. The honk might not help, but the looking was impressive.

Four raised up a hand to be noticed, and stared hard at Foucault. "What is that?"

"Um." Cecil blinked and shrugged. "Foucault. He's sort of a flamingo, mostly. But a little ostrich. We've been calling him an osmingo. Hi, I'm Cecil." He was pretty sure.

Four was just going to pretend he knew what a flamingo or and ostrich was. "...right. I'm Four." He held his hand out to shake.

Cecil shook his hand, smiling. "Hi! So, is there anything I should know about you as a roommate? You know, like you leave your socks everywhere, or you have to have blood runes on your side of the room, or you're allergic to glitter?"

These were all important (and completely normal) things, right?

Four's lips quirked up into almost a smile. "Nothing like that. I'm neat and keep to myself. I've never had a pet near me before--" the idea of keeping an animal around just to have one was anathema to the Abnegation, "--so is there anything I need to know?"

"Well, Foucault's pretty friendly." Cecil prodded Foucault, who leaned forward to peer at Four, blinking, then honked happily. "But if you leave a pile of clothes or papers or anything, he'll probably nest in them."

He tried to think if Sholeh had ever complained about anything. "I'm not really neat, but I'm not really messy, either? Um. I keep my bloodstones in the corner, but if they ever get in the way, let me know. I keep my guns and stuff under my bed; I don't mind you using them if you clean them and put them back and replace the ammunition. I get up pretty early once a week to do radio. I...think that's it?"

Four perked up. "You know how to shoot too? Everyone so far seemed rather soft for that. Well, not the two guys driving the bus, but the students."

"Oh, yes!" Cecil nodded emphatically to both questions. "A lot of folks here seem to be from really weird, non-violent cultures." He shrugged. "I learned in elementary school, though. I mean, I'm not a sharpshooter or anything, but I can usually hit what I aim at. How are you?"

"I'm a sharpshooter," Four said with a little wry twist to his mouth. "I will go back home next spring to teach the next group of Dauntless initiates to hit what they aim at. Maybe I can give you some pointers."

"Oh, that would be neat!" Cecil grinned happily. "What's Dauntless; is that where you're from?"

"It's my faction," Four said, nodding. "The city I live in doesn't really have a name. It's the place where anyone who's still alive lives."

"Huh." Cecil cocked his head at the wording. "Do people who aren't alive live - or, not-live - somewhere else?" Did they have living/dead segregation, or what?

Four blinked. "What? Oh, no, the dead stay dead."

Beat.

"Is that a problem here?"

"Mostly they stay dead," Cecil agreed, not sure if them staying dead or them not was the problem. "Although my big sister when I came here was a ghost, so I guess not all of them. What happened where you're from that there's only one place left? If it's not rude to ask."

"Humanity turned on itself," Four said with a frown. "Our ancestors holed themselves up in the city, built a wall and formed the factions to stop our baser instincts from destroying us too."

Cecil rolled his eyes. "Humanity turns on itself all the time." Whatever. "So what happened when everybody else was dead? Did you all go out and explore again?"

Four shook his head vigorously. "No. We stay behind the wall, other than the Dauntless who walk the outer perimeter. I'm here and that's kind of a huge deal--no one goes outside."

Cecil frowned. "But if you went into the city, and then people killed themselves, and you don't go outside, how do you know that everybody's dead?"

Hey, he could think logically sometimes! Of course, if you told him it came to you in a dream, he'd accept that as a valid reason, so.

"Because the council says so," Four said, "and no one's gone out to doublecheck, or if they did, they never came back to tell us what's out there."

"Oh, okay." Because you could trust the City Council, right? "Is your city nice?"

"Not really," Four admitted. "Most of the buildings are falling apart. The roads in the central part of the city just got repaved, though."

Really, what could you say to that? "Roads are good. Maybe you need better architects, though. Oh, is that what you're here to learn?"

"I'm hear to learn as much as I can about everything I can," Four replied.
