Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain that had blown through earlier in the week, the school administration had been worried that welcome picnic day would be wet and gloomy. Thankfully, it was sunny, warm, and beautiful outside, and everything had been set up just in time for the shuttle of new folks to arrive. There was a buffet table of food and drinks waiting, along with the list of Big and Little Siblings, the list of roommates, and more name tags than they'd probably need for three picnics.

Also, there wasn't a single flower out on the lawn after last weekend. Just saying.

With everything in place, it looked like it was time for the first summer term to begin!

[OCD up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"This makes no sense," Nathan whispered to himself, staring at the list of names that included his own. How had anyone known he'd be here when he himself hadn't expected it?

And who was this Soren Bearstar person? It wasn't a name he'd ever heard before, not from his grandmother or from Arran or his father. Nathan rubbed the side of his head, ignoring the constant buzzing that signaled technology nearby.

This Soren person was standing (nametag and all) right next to Nathan, also looking at the list with interest. "You're telling me," he said with a shake of his head. He knew Fandom was different, but it still felt... strange... to be apparently trusted with a roommate once more.

"I don't understand how anyone here knows my name," he muttered, glancing over at Soren when he spoke. "How could anyone know that? I've never been here before."

If their combined confusion illustrated anything, it was that they might be matched well as far as roommates went.

"It could be some sort of magic?" Soren suggested. The gods might not be here the same way they were in the US of Asgard, but that didn't mean this place couldn't have its own brand of magic.

"Maybe." Nathan sighed and glanced over again. "You're familiar with magic too?"

Among so many fain, it was almost surprising to run into so many who were familiar with magic but also didn't seem to be witches.

Soren raised his eyebrows, left hand reaching to his cheek where the spear tattoo was, about to say something about how wasn't it obvious, when he remembered that no, it wasn't obvious.

"Yes," he said instead. "Magic is everywhere in my world."

"Mine too," Nathan shared, "but not everyone is able to tell that. The fain, I mean, they think no magic exists."

Nathan peered a little closer ate Soren, noticing the tattoo but nothing familiar about his eyes.

"This place is strange."

"I don't think there's anyone in my world who could deny magic exists," Soren admitted. Even the Biblists with their strange beliefs still acknowledged the existence of the Scandian gods. "I'm Soren, by the way."

"Nathan," he said, giving Soren a slight nod. "Plenty of people deny it in mine but they just don't know it's there. They don't see it."

The fain had it so easy.

"That's so strange," Soren shook his head. "It looks like we're to be roommates, then," he added, glancing again at the sheet of names. "Which means the first thing you ought to know about me is that I am a berserker," he paused, waiting to see Nathan's reaction to that statement, wondering if his world had anything like it.

It was going to be a reaction he had to a lot of things around here.

"I don't know what that is."

So, at least it wasn't a bad reaction? He wasn't a Hunter, at least.

"Should I be concerned?"

"Most people would be," Soren admitted. "Berserkers are supposed to be- unpredictable- when under the battle-fever." He was, of course, an exception to the rule, but he wanted to see how Nathan reacted before he explained further.

"...okay." Nathan didn't say anything for a few seconds. "Should I just leave the room when that happens? I like sleeping outside anyway."

As far as reactions went, that was... pretty good.

"It's not going to happen in the room," he assured Nathan, laughing. "I spent years holding it off, but even now that I have given in, it's not as though finding your dirty socks on my side of the room is enough to bring it up."

"I'm a witch," Nathan provided since they were sharing and there weren't any decrees here holding him back from that. "It doesn't mean all that much, honestly."

It meant a lot but Nathan was downplaying it, just in case.

In Soren's world, there were those who would judge men who played with Freya's magic, but he was not one of them, so he just nodded. "I've heard the word before," he admitted. "Some use it to describe seethkona. Or seethmathr, in your case."

"Seethmathr," he repeated carefully though his pronunciation wasn't the best. He'd tried though. "I've never heard the word before but if you're able to be okay with the witch thing, I'm fine with the berserker thing. I've dealt with a lot lately."

And it was refreshing for someone to be open with him.

"Same here," Soren agreed. "I think we'll get along just fine, then."

"I think so too," Nathan said and cracked a small smile. He'd go about telling Soren about his knack for sleeping outside a little later. "Good."

He nodded again.

Considering Soren barely slept, it really was unlikely that the beds in their room would be used much, if at all. "Well," Soren said finally. "I don't know about you, but I think it's high time I checked out the food that this feast day has to offer."

"Probably a good choice, yeah," Nathan said, nodding. "I'll be right behind you, I'm sure."

It was really too difficult to resist the allure of free food.
