Library, Tuesday

Look, there was library weirdness, and then there was... whatever the hell was happening in the library today.

Not only were entire collections appearing and disappearing, sometimes in completely different languages, but there was a freaking dinosaur (a microraptor, to be exact) perched atop one of the shelves of arts and crafts books, chewing on a book of knitting patterns.

William's first idea had been to chase it into Special Collections, but that plan failed when he was unable to open the door to that section of the library. That didn't bode well at all, he mused, considering that typically, library staff were notified of any sort of intentional lockdown.

Well, he was just going to ignore the dinosaur for now, at least, as long as it was chewing on books, not people, and mark down that they needed to order a replacement copy of that particular book once all this was said and done.

Excursion!

So, "bright and early the next morning" apparently meant 10:00. Still, Jeff showed up, armed with a lacrosse stick and helmet he'd swiped from the gym.

"Okay, folks! So, there are apparently dinosaurs roaming the streets. That is a problem, but there are worse things going on. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm still going to go check out that weather machine (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/7192718.html). If we're sneaky enough, we should be fine, right? And if anyone here has superpowers, or just plain old fighting experience, that'd be damn helpful. Now, who's with me?"

"Of course I am," Elsa shared, holding up a bare hand. "Unless you've been there before or there's someone else here who has, you'll probably want me along to point the way."

All the more important when there were great beasts and hairy warriors, and some strange mix between the two that claimed to be trolls out there.

Elsa knew trolls when she saw them, thank you. She wasn't going to buy that one.

Jeff... wasn't sure he liked that idea, but she had a point. "Well, okay," he agreed. "But only if you promise not to get hurt."

Oh, Jeff. Elsa would be flattered that you were so concerned, if she wasn't so busy being amused that you thought she might get hurt out there.

It's as if you thought she couldn't handle a few dinosaurs.

"I promise," she replied, smiling faintly. "Should I make you do the same?"

Well, he didn't!

Besides, he couldn't handle a few dinosaurs...

Jeff thumped the lacrosse stick against his helmet. "I'm good," he lied. "I promise I'll be fine."

"Well, good. I would have to be upset with you if you were to get eaten by a..." She made a face toward the door. "... feathery dragon?"

Look, dinosaurs weren't really a thing that had been figured out in a proper scientific sense, back in Elsa's day.

"Dinosaurs," Jeff told her. "Dragons aren't re...ally a thing, in my universe. Same general concept, except these things don't breathe fire, and they lived 65 million years ago. Their bones are all over the place."

See how deftly he avoided the topic of whether he might get eaten? It was better not to think about it.

It's okay, Joker. Elsa wouldn't let you get eaten.

"That long ago?" She looked suitably impressed. "How do people even put a timeframe on something like that? I can wrap my head around centuries, barely, but millions of years?"

Straying a little from the original point, there, Elsa.

"I noticed on the way here that some barely seem interested in us at all. Mostly the ones on four feet, instead of two..."

"Plant-eaters," Jeff told her with a wave of his hand. "Thing of 'em like..." He was going to say "rhinos", but she might not know what those were, either. He racked his brain for something Scandinavian that was both docile and dangerous, before finally coming up with the obvious answer. "...reindeer. They're reindeer-lizards."

He shrugged. "I dunno exactly how they tell how old things are. Science! Something about how much radiation is in the carbon, the way the rock is layered, how deep they have to dig. It's all estimates, when you're dealing with something that crazy-old, but some people spend lifetimes studying old bones."

"Entire lifetimes, just looking at bones," Elsa echoed, sounding maybe the slightest bit enraptured by the idea. Creatures that hadn't been around for millions of years, still there to be studied...

The 'reindeer-lizard' concept made it difficult not to smile a little more.

"I... might have to learn more about them," she decided. "After the crisis has passed, of course."

"Well, there is no lack of information, I can tell you that. People love dinosaurs." Jeff looked at the door a little nervously. "So long as they're, y'know, long-dead where they belong. T-Rexes rampaging through the streets? Not so much with the love."

Elizabeth had nowhere else to be, but here. The flowers in her hair were starting to wilt, but she paid it no heed.

Occasionally, she would bring up her hand, to brush away the blood under her nose.

She knew nothing of the things outside. It was unlikely she would need to.

Jeff snapped his fingers in front of her face. "Hey, Tired Eyes, snap out of it! We've got stuff to do!"

Cosette, just as expected, had decided to ignore the warning in Éponine's original text message this morning completely. (Or maybe Éponine had been trying to goad her into this, she realized belatedly, but in that case she wasn't about to give some alternate-universe version of her quasi-foster sibling the satisfaction of coming to some disastrous end.)

Besides, the dinosaurs weren't all that scary -- she seemed rather charmed by the one in the library as a matter of fact -- but they were making it a nuisance to get around, so all things considered she'd much rather see what she could do to help resolve the situation. Preferably without hurting the dinosaurs, though. She'd grabbed a broom from one of the janitorial closets on her way over today. She'd never been able to prevail on Montparnasse to teach her how to use a knife, but, well, she knew how to handle a broom, let's just say that.

Still clutching it in one hand, she disappeared into the stacks again, this time in search of anything that might have to do with what Éponine had told her.

It hadn't been much to go on, so this might take a while.
