The Library, February 22

Zero opens the library and heads for her customary station behind the desk. She doesn't seem to have any trashy romance novels about today, so she should be helpful, if you need help. The library is open, people!

"Tell y'what, I'll call you next time I whip out the mallet."

"That is kind of, y'know, really worryin'. But I guess by now John and Chloe know what they're gettin' into. As long as no one gets stuck as a shoe..."

"You just made me the happiest guy in the library," Peter said. Taking a quick look around, he added, "I mean, it's not like there's a lot of competition for that title at the moment, but still."

"It's just that one class all the time, isn't it?" Peter pondered. "I'm hoping that 'being turned into something' isn't a skill I'll have to work on to get into Advanced Journalism. I wouldn't know how to practice that."

"Yeh, s'kinda dead in here...maybe Skeeter'll turn you into a spider! You could manage that, right?"

"~~Nah, it's been overdone over the past few years.~~ I think I probably could deal with that," Peter said. "But with my luck, she'd probably make me an octopus."

"How about you? Have any classes where you might become an animal or a potted plant or something?"

"Oh, no, not an octopus! Hopefully she'd make your backpack into a nice tank for you?

"Well, there's Creature Languages. I had Cat last semester, where we turned into cats for class, 'n then I was a kitten for a while independently. There was an incident with a student's books."

"That would be awfully nice of her," Peter said. "So I don't think it's likely."

"You know, if it weren't for John being a one man zoo, I'd be very weirded out by the 'independent cat' thing. But as it stands, I'll just assume that you were a cute kitten and leave it at that," Peter said with a slight grin.

"But if you were an octopus, you wouldn't be able to breathe air. So you'd suffocate. And then I would be sad.

"I was very...pink. And fluffy. Some people thought I was adorable."

"I'm pretty sure Skeeter would change me back before suffocation. A dead student would definitely be a bad thing that even she would want to avoid," Peter reasoned. "But I do appreciate the concern."

"A pink, fluffy, Zero kitten? I don't know how that could be anything but adorable. I mean, pink and fluffy! I'm mentally awwwing and I never saw this."

"That's true. The paperwork alone..." Zero grinned to show she was kidding.

"Well, you might still get your chance. What are you doin' third period tomorrow? D'you have class?"

"I'm sure the principal would call her into his office and let her know that killing students is 'uncool'," Peter said with airquotes.

"No, I'm actually free all day tomorrow. What's going on in third period?"

"He would be very stern.

"I'm gonna be a cat again. For Creature Languages. That is, if I can persuade Professor Skeeter to cooperate." Zero looks a little terrified by this.

"Eep," Peter said. "Well, I'm sure she wouldn't be opposed to helping a student who didn't do something to annoy her. And you don't have her for class, right? So she probably doesn't have a problem with you."

"I'm hopeful. And scared," she confessed.

"You'll be fine," Peter encouraged. "When are you going to ask her about it?"

"After her afternoon class. Hopefully I'll still be a biped afterward."

"Good luck," Peter said. "So, third period tomorrow assuming things go well?"

"That's the plan. An' if she turns me into a cat when I meet her, hey, I'll still be one tomorrow, right? So that works. Can we expect to see you?"

"Assuming the professor doesn't mind, I think I could manage to stop by," Peter said, smiling. "It beats my other plans for tomorrow by a wide margin."

"I think I sort of am the professor for tomorrow. I have more, er, practical experience than everyone else in the class.

"Great! It's a date." Zero blushed. "I mean, not, er, date, date..."

"In that case, I'll consider myself invited. I'll definitely stop by," Peter said.

"And yeah, it's..." Peter realized what Zero said and then noticed the blushing. "Um. I'll be there," he said, turning away.

"So, I have to go to class. But I'll see you tomorrow."

"I'll be there. And, um, fuzzy." A part of her brain that Zero hoped was the kitteny bit wondered if Peter gave good pettins. She turned pinker. "See you then."
