Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

#19: WHEN EVERYTHING GOES WRONG, TREAT DISASTER AS A WAY TO WAKE UP.

Will had been against this as soon as it'd been brought up. He'd argued and gotten angry but, in the end, he'd lost the battle and now he was here.

For his so called safety.

He didn't agree but he'd gone with it. His father's (whoever he was) rules were still emblazoned in his mind so he'd gone with it and now he was here.

Another new place, another new set of faces and another opportunity for Will to blend in and not draw attention to himself. It was getting to be a well loved hobby of his.

Yeah, like Chuck had planned to stick around the Portalocity lounge with the rest of his new class and wait. He'd gotten out of there the moment he'd arrived, and the only reason he was late now was that he'd had to carry Max for the duration of his walk here.

Puppies could only keep going for so long.

So now Chuck was sitting at a picnic table, feeding the pup slices of meat and looking the absolute opposite of approachable. Joy.

Liara had not grown any more fond of crowds over the past few months, but she made the effort to show up regardless. She was holding onto the - perhaps foolish - hope that Karolina would return today, that was her excuse.

As it was, she sat at the edge of the picnic, quietly leafing through a book she'd already read twice.

Atton honestly couldn't care less where he sat. Right in the middle of the picnic, hovering over a pile of free food while he played pazaak with himself?

Sure. Why not.

Elsa was going to be one of those 'hugging the outskirts of the picnic' newbies, yes. She realized that she was going to have to at least put in some sort of appearance, but nowhere had anyone said she needed to actually mingle.

And besides that, she was hungry. It had been a long trip here from Arendelle, and with an entire table of food set out, it only made sense to--

"Is that chocolate?"

Okay, maybe she could wander in slightly closer to people if it meant actually getting food from the table.

Jessica mostly wanted to get back to work researching right now, but she figured she should make her way out to the picnic. Not only might there be random alternate universe people she knew, but she also had the Student Council President thing. She probably should meet the new people, right?

She grabbed some coffee to help with the cold and started making her way around the picnic.

Ozzy might have only been one half husky, and the other half of him was something altogether tinier and decidedly not a powerhouse in the world of dogs, but huskies had been bred to pull things, and the half that was in Ozzy was no exception.

Today's thing-being-pulled was a somewhat perplexed Evan, who hadn't realized that there was another dog at the picnic until Ozzy had started bounding off toward Chuck, nearly yanking his boy off his feet at the sudden takeoff. At least Evan had more or less managed to reel his arm back in by the time they got close. Being dragged halfway across campus by something the size of a corgi was bad enough without an arm that looked something like a stretched noodle.

Having reached their destination, Ozzy was going to just make himself comfortable, trying to sniff at the other dog. Hi, other dog! Are you a dog? Maybe we can be dogs together!

Evan, in turn, mostly just looked chagrined as he tried to gather up his wiggling canine in his arms.

Evan was starting to wonder if maybe he'd made a tactical error, bringing his dog to the welcome picnic. Sure, Ozzy was friendly, but that really wound up being part of the problem. One moment, Evan was attempting to get some food from the buffet table, and then there was a leash being wound around his ankles and a tail thumping against his leg as he attempted to keep his balance. The next, Ozzy was off on a tear, trying to chase squirrels or investigate whoever was nearest.

It made for a very... athletic picnic experience, at least.

"Woah-- oi, Max!"

And there went Chuck's plate. You were sure to wind up in his good books now, Evan. Blissfully ignorant of his master's plight, Max dashed forward as far as his leash would let him, shoving his nose in Ozzy's face. Or as close to it as he could get.

Food was the biggest motivator to get Flick down to the picnic. Food and the ability to get out of his room and out of his head, that was.

He was hanging out at the edges of the crowd, drinking something warm and checking out the new faces. Hard to believe he'd been there as long as he had.

Hooray, dogs!

Evan, for his part in all this, was blushing furiously, wrapping his arms around Ozzy's middle and almost, almost managing to pick him up for the third time now, but the little guy kept wiggling free. And now there was excited barking to go with it.

"Sorry! I'm so sorry! He just took off!"

Why did Ozzy have so much wriggle in him?!

Jim was back from Toronto and yet, it was still cold. He didn't mind too much because he'd had a few good days but still. Cold.

Being Jim, he dealt with admirably and while looking really, really good. Of course.

"Can't you control your bloody animal?!" Chuck demanded, tugging Max back with help of the leash.

Max was tiny and his anchor impression was weak, so it wasn't too much of a fuss.

"Usually! He just doesn't get to see many other dogs!" Puppies were apparently at a premium around here until just about right this moment. This moment also involved a fair bit of flailing, apparently, as Evan grabbed at Ozzy one more time, and then wrapped his arms around him a couple more times than was strictly humanly possible in order to keep him from making another breakaway. "But I should have guessed that someone would have a pet here today. Someone usually has something."

Max was new and novel in that he wasn't part polar bear, or a dinosaur.

Sorry, Will, but right now your face was going to draw attention from at least one person.

Jessica approached cautiously, well aware that a guy who looked like Peter Parker could be anything from a time displaced version of her Peter to an alternate universe Peter to a clone to just some guy who looked like him. But still, she had to check. "Excuse me. Peter?"

Was Chuck developing a mild facial twitch already? Must be Fandom.

"Didn't see 'no pets' on the folder anywhere," he said, managing to make that sound about as pissy as everything else he'd said to date. He plopped Max down in his lap. "How about you get him a better leash?"

Sorry, Evan. This was just how Chuck communicated with... everyone who wasn't a 250 feet tall robot.

It was a picnic day, which meant that Emma was out by the tables making sure food got in her belly and in her backpack.

Though right now she was frowning at the hot chocolate and wondering if there was a cinnamon shaker hidden anywhere in the spread.

"His leash is perfectly fine," Evan replied, frowning as he straightened up, raising an eyebrow at Chuck. "He managed to drag me across the school grounds at the other end of it. He just surprised me when he took off."

A beat.

"A little bit like yours surprised you."

Ozzy, for the most part, kept up his wriggle for a moment more, and then decided now would be a great time to appeal to Evan's better nature to set him down by starting to lick excitedly at his chin. He wasn't getting anywhere with the grip his boy had on him, now.

"You don't see mine running off to the other end of the picnic just 'cause he got excited," Chuck said. "You get a dog, you figure out how to contain him."

He had to aggressively avoid thinking about how that equated to his father sending him off to be dealt with elsewhere - and even in that, he failed.

Max, perhaps sensing this, began licking Chuck's wrist with enthusiasm.

The snow meant that Naga was alternatively romping through drifts or flopping down to demand belly stritches from Korra who'd found a nice (albeit leafless) tree to sit under.

Celia wasn't sure what over half the food available was, but she didn't want to seem like a glutton in front of people she'd only just met. She helped herself to a plate of fruit, which was generally exotic enough for her anyway. (She wasn't sure what the bits that weren't grapes or oranges were, honestly. Even those had been counted as treats on the rare occasions Hector had shared them with her.)

She found a spot on top of a picnic table to perch, where she could easily watch the ongoing spectacle of new students. At least she didn't think she stuck out that much.

Bay had spent winter break in Kansas City, watching bad movies with Emmett and dodging everyone else's drama. It had been nice to get a respite from the weird before she plunged back in for her final semester. She felt smug as she perched on a picnic table with her sketchbook at hand; she had a year more of this place under her belt than the new suckers.

Evan noticed Max's enthusiastic licking and wound up smiling a little, in spite of himself.

It was difficult to be properly chagrined when there were happy dogs giving happy dog kisses.

"You're right," he replied, ducking his head a little in hopes of hiding that little grin he had going, there. "I'm usually better at it, but obviously he needs more training in crowds. I'll have to work on that." A lot. "Um... your puppy's cute, by the way."
