Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the ~~moddable~~ warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

[OCD up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Jim was back from Toronto and yet, it was still cold. He didn't mind too much because he'd had a few good days but still. Cold.

Being Jim, he dealt with admirably and while looking really, really good. Of course.

"My hands are too frozen to draw," Bay informed him, jamming said hands into her pockets as she wandered up. "Hey. Good break?"

"Hasn't been bad," Jim said, sticking out his hands. "C'mon, let me see your hands. I'll warm 'em up for you."

Bay pretended to hesitate, but ultimately held her hands out. "Should I take my gloves back off?" she asked. "I don't want them to interfere with the magic."

"My magic cannot be stopped by simple fabric," he said, taking her hands in between is and rubbing them with his own gloved hands. "Just like I cannot be tamed. I'm simply too much for clothing!"

"And yet you're fully dressed," Bay pointed out, after the obligatory eye-roll. "Such a loss for the new kids, Jim."

"Well, I wouldn't want to show anyone up," he said, smirking. "Make them feel self conscious and insecure. I'm doing a good deed."

"That's you, always putting others first."

Bay could feel her cheeks going pink, and she pulled her hands back in hopes of averting a true blush crisis. "Much better," she decided, flexing them. "Thanks."

"I'm a giver," he said, putting his hands back in his pockets to get them warmer. "How's it going with you? Enjoying the time off from classes?"

"Yeah, my break was actually really relaxing," Bay answered. "I went back to Kansas City. Quiet, low on the family drama, and completely free of sci-fi stuff. I even got in my art school applications."

Wryly, she added, "An extra week, and I would have died of boredom. What about you? Did you do anything fun?"

"I went and froze my ass off in Canada for a few days," he shared, shrugging. "Other than that, I was back here, sleeping and annoying my roommate. That last one is a hobby of mine. I encourage everyone to give it a try."

"Well, I bet after Canada this seems pretty much tropical," Bay offered. "And I haven't seen Jackson lately. Next time I do, I'll try to piss him off just for you."

"You're the best," Jim said, smiling. "I'm taking care of a friend's cat right now and Jackson hates it. Really hates the cat which makes me want to get like five cats just to annoy him. I think I might have a problem. Am I a terrible person?"

"You like me, so obviously not," Bay smiled back. "Unless I'm a terrible person too. Which is completely possible. How obnoxious is this cat, anyhow?"

She wasn't really a pet person, but she had some sympathy for Jackson. She'd met some fairly obnoxious cats.

"He's actually not really that bad," Jim grudgingly admitted. "Besides waking me up by climbing on me, he's pretty independent. Just does his own thing and makes sure I feed him and he has a warm place to sleep."

Moxy was an easy cat to care for.

"I think it might be just cats in general with Jackson. Actually, it's the world in general with Jackson. Guy is never happy."

"If he wasn't such a jerk about it, that might almost make me feel sorry for him," Bay observed. "Also, you always make me feel lucky I just got Topher. He pretty much just ignores me. And everything else not on a screen."

"Ah, Topher," Jim said, sounding sarcastically fond. "He thinks I've got a girl's name. It's really pretty charming of him."

Not.

"... he thinks James is a name for girls, or he thinks your name is Tiffany or something?" Bay asked. Because those things were equally possible, yet insane in slightly different ways. As an afterthought, she added, "He's called me the wrong body of water a couple times. Ocean or Lake or whatever."

"He was trying to guess my name and every single guess was a girl's name," he said, shaking his head. "Tiffany, Jennifer, Jessica, whatever. Because I am clearly female."

Topher was special.

"Best case scenario, he does it on purpose but I really do think he's that kind of guy to never remember names."

"No, he doesn't," Bay agreed. "I think he only knows mine because it is literally all over our room. But thinking your name is Tiffany ... I mean, that's all kinds of special. He could at least go for Dave."

"I think he was expecting me to get pissed or something which..." Jim shrugged. "He'll have to do worse than calling me the wrong name. Besides, it seems that the lovely ladies of this place have scaring Topher into wetting his pants well under control."

The gaping man over there was Dr. Leonard McCoy. If he seemed a little razzled, it was just because a miniature version of his best friend, who he was almost completely certain was supposed to be in San Francisco, was standing here at a picnic on an island thousands of miles away.

No, he wasn't going to talk to him. There could be paradoxes! And explosions. Maybe. However there came to be two James T. Kirks, it was probably weird, and McCoy probably did not want to be involved.

But he couldn't help staring.

And it was pretty obvious when someone was staring at you. Jim eventually found the source of the staring and...stared back. He didn't recognize the guy but the guy seemed to know him.

That or the guy seemed to find him attractive and Jim didn't know if that was a compliment or if that was creepy.

But hey, staring contest!

McCoy was a mature, intelligent adult whose best plan was to scurry off without a word. It was a tiny island and an even tinier picnic venue, but his instincts took over. He thought he should have just told the kid he had something on his face as an excuse, but turning around after bolting to the other side of the area would be even stranger.

Very, very inconspicuous and not at all bizarre.

Yeah, that wasn't strange at all.

Jim...yeah, Jim didn't really care all that much after he got done laughing. He went back to mingling.
