Library, Tuesday

For all its flights of fancy, the library certainly knew when to get down to business ~~to defeat the Huns~~. The books were all where they ought to be, nothing was flying around unexpectedly, and the only thing that wasn't usually in the library were the plates of gingerbread cookies that had appeared on the tables, because apparently the library had decided the researchers needed some sustenance to get them through the task.

Well, there was also the sign informing students there were no weapons allowed in the library, next to a large box for them to deposit said weapons, but that wasn't the doing of the library itself.

In any case, it was open and ready for business!

Riley blinked. She was obviously a total sweetheart, wasn't she?

"Uh, I'm sorry to interrupt but I think we've got some tech from your world here on this...planet."

So weird to say, so weird.

"And some the tech brought some of your people here and they're digging."

So descriptive, Riley. And so helpful!

"That is exactly none of my concern," Tannis declared, shaking her head like she was very set on it. She reached for the buttons by the screen again. "Do not disturb me again. Goodbye!"

The call ended.

Riley leaned back and watched the connection cut out.

"That went well," he said, making a face. "Dammit."

Riley sighed and rubbed his eyes. Stupid Patricia Tannis.

"That was kind of rude," Topher remarked, blinking at the screen like he couldn't believe that had just happened.

Then he shrugged. "Well. We tried."

Pause. "Can I keep the communicator?"

"No, you fucking can't, you twit," Electroclash drawled as she made her way over. Of course she'd been listening in on this whole thing. "It can still be useful in more competent hands."

Riley looked up at that voice and immediately rolled his eyes.

"Go away," he groused, shaking his head. "I'll keep the communicator since I'm probably the most competent one here."

He thought so, at least.

"I'm pretty sure you shouldn't call your students twits," Topher told Electroclash, looking... almost slightly stung? "But more importantly, no, I made it work and found out who Tannis was, just as a reminder."

"Yes, and then she refused to talk to you," Electroclash shot back. "So bloody hurrah to your skills there, kid. As for whose the most competent one here, I can do what you just did, now that I've seen you do it."

Because she could just use your powers to essentially hit redial.

"And I won't make as much of a fucking mess of it, either, because I'm not as bad with people as you two."

Ahahahaha.

"No, you're worse," Riley said, shaking his head. "I didn't see you making any attempt to do a darn thing today, you know. It was me and it was him. You were over there, just watching us."

Yes, he'd seen that, Electroclash.

"So, congratulations on doing nothing."

"Yeah!" Topher agreed, but he didn't want to fail Electroclash's class halfway through senior year, so he left his rebuttal at that. "But just so we're clear, the poor people skills were all him."

Whose side were you on, Topher?

His own, probably. Electroclash had to grudgingly respect that.

She gave them both a sour look. "Well, I can find someone with better people skills, which is more than could be said for you." She nodded at Topher. "You were ready to just give up after the first failure."

She was only on her own side too.

"How are you gonna do what we just did?" Riley asked, closing down his laptop. "You're not a computer expert."

Just a vibe he had and all.

"And I'm sure as hell not gonna help you because you are the way you are."

"She programs the Danger Shop pretty well," Topher told Riley, a little begrudgingly. "The shards of broken stuff always seem very real."

"I control machines with my voice, you dimwit," Electroclash replied, to Riley, with her hands on her hips. Though she nodded at Topher. "What he said about the Danger Shop? I talk to the computer and it does what I ask."

Please don't make the connection between that and your past fried electronics, Riley.

IT WAS TOO LATE FOR THAT, ELECTROCLASH.

"You control machines with your voice?" Riley asked, eyes widening. And he remembered that she lived around him and that just a few days after their unpleasant first meeting, his electronics had been toast. "Was that your doing? My stuff! Are you the one who did it?"

Sorry Topher, Riley wasn't being very clear right now. He was a little angry.

Shit.

Well, she was going to shrug now.

"Should've asked my name."

Riley glared and stood up quickly.

"Take the stupid communicator," he said, leaving it where it was. "This isn't over though, you and me."

Because now that he knew, he was determined to take revenge. "I'm outta here. Next time, maybe say thank you before you get in on how you can do it better."

He brushed past and purposefully bumped her shoulder as he moved past (because he was twelve) as he walked out of the library for the day.
