Library, Tuesday

For all its flights of fancy, the library certainly knew when to get down to business to defeat the Huns. The books were all where they ought to be, nothing was flying around unexpectedly, and the only thing that wasn't usually in the library were the plates of gingerbread cookies that had appeared on the tables, because apparently the library had decided the researchers needed some sustenance to get them through the task.

Well, there was also the sign informing students there were no weapons allowed in the library, next to a large box for them to deposit said weapons, but that wasn't the doing of the library itself.

In any case, it was open and ready for business!

After class, Riley had brought himself back to the library. He dropped the ECHO communicator he'd gotten from Raven on the table in front of him and eyed it.

He still hadn't figured out how to get it working so he was just going to hope it...magically came on. He left it alone while he opened his laptop and proceeded to start pulling up searches again to figure out what this company even was.

"Hey, what's that?"

Inside voice, Topher. Also, maybe don't immediately go to swipe the communicator without permission, seriously.

"Quiet down," Riley said, gesturing with his hand. "And it's a...communicator of some kind. One of my students found it outside. We think it's from the new arrivals. Be careful with it!"

"Those jerks from the dig site?" Topher asked with only the slightest decrease in volume as he started to play with the communicator. "It's cool-looking. Definitely a communicator, and can I say clunky?"

He fiddled with a knob or two, then peeled off the back compartment with seemingly little regard for the advice about being careful. "I wonder what kind of network this thing uses..."

Riley watched, a little impressed with how quickly he was figuring the thing out.

"Jerks from the dig site, yeah," he said, leaning back. "I've been working on finding a network but I can't get the damn thing to work."

"Well, yeah, it might need a boost," Topher mused, and soon he was scrambling for his backpack, thrusting the ECHO back in Riley's direction with a mumbled "Hold this" as he rummaged through it. While he dug around in the bag, he explained, "If you found it yesterday and it didn't get charged since then, maybe it ran out of juice -- that thing's clunky but not that heavy, so who knows what the battery life is like. Or maybe it's code-locked, which eventually you could get past by trying all the combinations, but who has the time for that? Well, teachers, maybe, I guess." Thaaaat wasn't very nice.

Finally Topher surfaced, clutching a cable from his bag that, upon inspection, seemed to be what he was looking for. "Either way, if I hook it up to my laptop, that should solve both problems."

The kid seemed to know what he was talking about so Riley let the quip about teachers slide. He held onto the communicator, watching while Topher moved around.

"And hopefully when you hook it up, it doesn't have some GPS coordinate thing kick in and lead these guys right to the library. I don't wanna deal with an angry librarian."

"...Good point," Topher granted, sounding genuinely surprised about that. "But I wouldn't worry. Construction workers in a library? Not very likely." Offensive, rude, and not strictly correct about the dig site engineers' occupation. But great, Topher. "But I can try and confuse the signal just in case."

After some quick typing away on his computer, he jammed the end of the cable into the communicator, sticking the other end of it into the side of his laptop. "Huh, it fits," he marveled. "I'm awesome."

Charming.

Topher came by the library today because... well, because he had somehow gotten disoriented and thought it was Billy's day. But that didn't matter. There was wifi in here, so he was content to pull out one of his laptops from his bag and stick around for a while.

Electroclash was here. In uniform, no less.

Mostly swearing at a computer, but also keeping an eye on the two guys with the unfamiliar tech. Because she thought she might learn something. She couldn't command things she had no clue about.

Not that she cared about this island or wanted to help the town, or was worried about the influx of strangers and pricks on the radio. Nah.

...and now he was connected with some sort of network he'd never been connected with before.

Riley waited, wondering if anyone would be home on the other end. He tilted his laptop towards Topher so the kid could see the visual phone call he'd managed to set up.

"You can do the talking," Topher hissed, scooting his chair to an ideal spot so that he could see the screen without being able to be seen too clearly by this Tannis lady. He really didn't want to have to try to carry this conversation, but he was curious about what she'd say.

And far away on the planet of Pandora, in the city of Sanctuary, the screen on Dr. Patricia Tannis' desk... beeped at her.

She didn't like it.

But she pushed some buttons and picked up the incoming call from an unknown source. And then she squinted at the unfamiliar figures on her screen. Random human beings. What. Why.

She adjusted the goggles atop her head and demanded to know, "What is the meaning of this?"

Re: Talk to Pandora!

[identity profile] 1stinkinpercent.livejournal.com 2013-12-10 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
These were probably two of the last people that should make first contact with anyone from another world. It was bound not to go well.

"Uh, hi!" Riley said, giving the screen a little wave. "Are you Patricia Tannis?"

Hopefully he hadn't dialed some far off pizza place...

[identity profile] pandora-goodies.livejournal.com 2013-12-10 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yes," Tannis replied, "and you have no right to intrude on me like this! I am in the middle of very serious research and I am no mood for the kind of nosebleeds this kind of uninvited social interaction will bring!"

Whoa there.

Riley blinked. She was obviously a total sweetheart, wasn't she?

"Uh, I'm sorry to interrupt but I think we've got some tech from your world here on this...planet."

So weird to say, so weird.

"And some the tech brought some of your people here and they're digging."

So descriptive, Riley. And so helpful!

"That is exactly none of my concern," Tannis declared, shaking her head like she was very set on it. She reached for the buttons by the screen again. "Do not disturb me again. Goodbye!"

The call ended.

Riley leaned back and watched the connection cut out.

"That went well," he said, making a face. "Dammit."

Riley sighed and rubbed his eyes. Stupid Patricia Tannis.
