Parents' Weekend Evening Event - Saturday Evening Sock Hop

The student council folks had discussed events for Parents' Weekend and decided upon a sock hop at the community center.

So, the whole place was now kitschily appropriately decorated and very glittery, the refreshments were set out, and the music was playing.

There was also a large box of socks at the doorway, for those who felt their socks were too threadbare or too boring, who didn't have any socks, or who came from a world where socks didn't exist. None of the socks matched. Some seemed to be made of extremely odd materials. Some had capes and/or toes (not always five). Most were interesting color combinations. Nearly all had googly eyes that seemed to actually be looking around at things.

Hopefully they were at least good dancers?

Karolina looked over.

"No, I'm pretty sure I'm already standing next to the best guy in the community center."

That didn't necessarily mean she wasn't going to end up going over there eventually.

"You trying to cheer me up?" Jim asked, smiling at her. "It's working. Keep going."

Karolina chuckled a bit, and reached for his hand before bumping her shoulder against his. "Just focus on the good stuff," she said. "I think you had a pretty good week until now, so just focus on that."

"It wasn't a bad week," he said, taking her hand and giving it a squeeze. "There's a lot of nice girls out there, you know."

"I don't know if we're using the same criteria for nice," Karolina teased, even though she looked down as she chuckled. "But yes, I'm sure."

"What, don't wanna hear about them?" Jim asked, not serious about that or anything.

Karolina shook her head. Quelle surprise.

"I could probably listen without imploding now," she said, because the week had been pretty rough but she was in control again now. "But, not really. Besides, I'd have nothing to reciprocate with."

Kidding. Kidding so hard.

"So, if you had something to reciprocate with, you'd want me to tell you?" he asked, spinning her words a bit.

But Jim, that had been the joke! What was she supposed to say now?

"... No?"

Good enough. With a laugh, even.

Jim frowned at her.

"But, it'd make me feel better!"

He was teasing.

"Sorry, I don't think I love you enough for that." She was ever so sorry, really. "And, it's a moot point! I didn't so much as hold anyone's hand."

"Aren't you dating someone?" Jim asked, glancing over at her. "You guys didn't do anything?"

Karolina blushed.

So, she was going to tackle the less blush-worthy bit of that. "Uh, we're... I don't know what we are," she admitted. "I think we kind of went on break when the Xavin thing happened. And then when we were going to talk about it, I was a guy and freaking out, so we just ended up watching HBO instead."

Jim chuckled and gave her hand a little squeeze. "See, this is why I don't date. Seriously, at least."

Natalie didn't count.

"Didn't you just date someone while I was away?" she asked, giving his hand a squeeze back. Mostly diverting the conversation from herself like a sneaky little hippie alien. "Or was that terribly non-serious? Like joke dating?"

Or whatever you should call the opposite of serious dating. Probably not that.

"We made a deal," Jim told her, shrugging. "It wasn't dating. And it was over when she left the island. She told me so."

"Huh." Karolina considered this, chewing her lip. "I don't think I could do that. Just... let go like that."

Probably because underneath all that heroic marrying for world peace, she was very very romantic.

"She's in love with someone else," Jim said, shrugging. "And can't move on. And she told me that too just so you don't think I'm making judgments."

"Then why'd she not-date you in the first place?"

Oh, Karolina, there was someone wrestling with that same question worlds away. So a definitive answer was probably not going to happen.

Jim shrugged.

"I'm good in bed," he said, keeping it light. "I honestly don't know, Karolina."

Karolina gave his hand another squeeze. Just because. "Well, I'm bummed I missed it," she decided, lightly. "I think it would've been interesting to be here when it was happening."

"Maybe next time," Jim said before adding, "Oh wait, probably not since there won't be a next time. No more dating for me."

"Because she broke your heart and you've vowed never to let that happen again."

Okay, now was clearly just teasing him. A lot.

"Right on the nose," Jim said, playing along. "I'm guarding my heart from now on."

"Aww, there's hope for you yet, Jim," Karolina told him. "We'll find you someone nice! Or, your heart's chosen one will realize the error of her ways and come back to you. Probably riding a white stallion."

A beat.

"I maybe read a few romance novels this week."

Bad ones.
