Parents' Weekend Evening Event - Saturday Evening Sock Hop

The student council folks had discussed events for Parents' Weekend and decided upon a sock hop at the community center.

So, the whole place was now ~~kitschily~~ appropriately decorated and very glittery, the refreshments were set out, and the music was playing.

There was also a large box of socks at the doorway, for those who felt their socks were too threadbare or too boring, who didn't have any socks, or who came from a world where socks didn't exist. None of the socks matched. Some seemed to be made of extremely odd materials. Some had capes and/or toes (not always five). Most were interesting color combinations. Nearly all had googly eyes that seemed to actually be looking around at things.

Hopefully they were at least good dancers?

Gert was under no circumstances going to dance around in her socks at this thing, and she surveyed the room with a truly impressive amount of judgeyness.

Yeah, this was the school she had only yesterday described as "not completely terrible." Maybe she needed to rethink that.

"I thought I was done with lame dances," Nico observed, leaning over to rest her head against Gert's. "Good thing I like my socks."

They were black fishnets with slim maroon stripes, and might look totally terrible on anyone but Nico.

"Yeah, they look good on you," Gert agreed, looking down. "Wow. Checking out this room, I'm starting to feel like I oversold this place."

There was an older man in a nice, black suit perusing the refreshments to see if any were worthy of his attention.

Apparently just the chips so far.

You got lucky, Fandom.

"Hi!" Cecil grinned at the man. "Were you looking for something else? I can check in the kitchen."

Death turned to eye the boy for a moment. At least he was being polite about it. "Something with cheese maybe. Fried."

Cecil nodded. "I'll go look!"

After a few minutes, he came back out with a plate of things. "We have cheese cubes, but not fried. And we have these mini fried crab cakes, but I don't think they have cheese. So I brought them both." He smiled. "I think they were supposed to get put out later, but since you were asking, here you go!"

"They will suffice," he replied with a wane smile. "Aren't you a polite boy."

Cecil cocked his head and shrugged. He didn't bother correcting the "boy" comment, since this guy seemed like he'd think Cecil-full-grown was a boy, too. "Well, I try, I guess. You're very polite, too, so why would I want to be mean? Plus I'm on the student council now, and it would really reflect badly on the school if I was."

He'd call Eric and Tamsin children still. Well, possibly even younger than that.

"Ah yes, the school. An odd mix here."

"It's great, isn't it?" Cecil looked around at everyone. "Diversity's something every place should strive for."

Granted, they generally meant different genders and creeds and such, and skin colors that didn't necessarily include blue, but that was just narrow-minded.

"Why not. It all ends the same."

Said the expert.

"Well, true." Cecil shrugged. "But from an ephemeral standpoint, having lots of different types of people around makes it much more interesting!"

Theo was going to let Dr. Brockton do whatever he wanted to do while he hung around the food and drinks. The weekend hadn't been bad so far since he hadn't been talked to death but he was still wary.

Look who'd finally made it out of her room! Yes, Karolina had spent most of the past week in the safe confines of her room because... Because. Reasons.

There was no need to discuss that.

Point was, she was here now, in a rainbow-striped dress, and a pair of matching socks. Hanging out a little awkwardly by the refreshments, yes.

Nico hadn't exactly been thrilled to be here; school dances were exactly as lame as she remembered. But seeing Karolina, even if she knew from Gert that it was the wrong Karolina, made it almost worth it. The one back home was in a foster home far from anybody.

"Hey," she said. "So even if you're from a different universe or whatever, like Gert said, it's still really good to see you. And I love that dress."

It wasn't anything Nico would wear, but on Karolina rainbow stripes were perfect.

"Nico!"

Karolina was both surprised and thrilled. And Nico was totally getting a hug right now.

"Ooof!" And now Nico was squeezing back. "God, I missed you."

"I missed you too." A beat. "Well, not you you, but you know."

Timelines and alternate universes were confusing.

"Hi, it's good to see you."

"I know, even if I think my brain will come right apart if I think about it too hard," Nico nodded. "But hey, we get a free chance to catch up. So -- bonus."

Karolina's smile took a wry, almost apologetic tilt. "I'm not sure how much we can catch up. I'm... kinda way ahead of you in the timeline. Which I know hasn't stopped being exactly as brainbreaking as it was a second ago."

"So you can't tell me every single thing that happens between my now and ... whatever happened where you're from," Nico said, also wry. "Too bad. For what it's worth, I'm still in the Catholic Home for Gothic Orphans, and yes, it's lame. How's school?"

"It's okay." That meant basically nothing, and Karolina shrugged. "It's not LA, but I like it. I've only been back for a while, because I wasn't here for the summer."

Which wasn't a spoiler when she didn't specify, right?

After they met up earlier, Jessica spent a lot of time trying to remind Miles that with great power came great responsibility.

And then Miles saw that Jessica was spending her time helping to put together sock hops. Student Council President. Sure. "Total hypocrite," he muttered under his breath as he grabbed some punch.
