"Ethical choices aren't always highly charged situations where souls are on the line in a split second," Anakin announced from where he'd met his class in front of a grocery store across the causeway.

It had taken Anakin years to realize that, but he was a naturally ~~overdramatic~~ overdramatic person. "The choices you make in everyday life will affect the choices you make in highly charged situations. If you are morally ambiguous on the small stuff...well, it's hard to break that habit on the big things."

"You will each face a different scenario inside the store that I've pre-arranged," he said, "and then we'll discuss what you did and why you chose that."

Anya Corazon: The person in front of you is five dollars short on their total. Do you give them the money?

Chaz Villette: A toddler's in the cereal aisle throwing a tantrum while his mother looks on. Do you say anything?

Cordelia Chase: You're in the produce section and want to see how sweet the grapes are--do you try some?

Emma Swan: The woman in the bakery miscounted and gave you five donuts, but only charged you for four. Do you correct her?

Flick: You dropped a carton of eggs--do you stick around to offer to pay or just wander off?

Karina Lyle: The food you were buying was on special but it's ringing up at the cash register as the normal price. The difference is only about 10 cents per item and there's a long line behind you. Worth fighting over?

Mira: You have 11 items in your basket. Do you go through the 10 and under express lane anyway?

Raleigh Becket: There's a free sample station set up! Score! How many free samples do you get before you start feeling like you're taking advantage of them?

Scott McCall: There's a long line behind you and the woman in front of you is not only counting out precise change, she's just pulled out a wad of coupons she wants the cashier to run through now. Eyerolling at her: yes/no?

Ahahahahaha...no.

Free donuts were the tastiest ones. When they were real, at least.

For a second, Flick just stared at the broken eggs. He'd never had this happen with Jude since Jude was the careful one and he was the stupid one. He'd been the one breaking things and Jude would both offer to clean them up and offer to pay.

But Flick -- well, he wasn't Jude. And he wandered off, feeling like a heel but not having any second thoughts about it. It wasn't like a grocery store didn't have this happen all the time. They probably budgeted for it anyway.

Chaz didn't go for the mother, but he did kneel down near the kid and tried to strike up a cheerful conversation with the toddler. He had a lot of experience with kids.

Mbira went right through the express lane without a second thought. Clearly she was a terrible person.

It wasn't that Cordelia was ethical or not here. She just didn't shop for herself and didn't think there was anything to it other than dropping a bag in your cart and letting that be that.

Also, she was counting calories. So no grape-tasting.

Talk about what you did in your scenario and hear about other people's!

[OOC: That is, Anakin will chat with you but you should talk to each other, too!]

"I left, didn't offer to pay," Flick said, shrugging. "Accidents happen and grocery stores expect that. Are they gonna make some tiny child pay for eggs if he runs into them? They might try but they'd get bashed in the media because it would inevitably end up there once the mother of the child filed a lawsuit."

So cynical.

"But you aren't a small child," Anakin pointed out. "Do you think different rules might apply to you?"

"They don't know I'm not a child," he said, shrugging. "And I'm not gonna run up and tell them either."

"You don't feel guilty about that."

It wasn't a question or a judgment.

"I don't."

Even if it wasn't a question, Flick still answered it.

"It's just eggs. I got bigger things to worry about then breaking some cheap eggs."

"Is there anything in the grocery store that you would stick around to help with if it had fallen over?" Anakin asked. "Tower of toilet paper? Three thousand soup cans?"

Why do they even stack soup cans? Honestly.

Yeah, Flick gave him a look for the soup can question. He wasn't questioning the stacking but more the amount of cans in questions.

"Something breakable, maybe," Flick said, shrugging. "That could hurt someone if they stepped on it. Like glass or noxious gas."

"Do they sell a lot of noxious gas in the grocery store?" Anakin wondered.

"Do a lot of islands turn girls into guys for a weekend?" Flick countered. "No, but I'm sure there's one out there somewhere."

"We should probably check T&C," Anakin admitted.

Chaz shrugged. "I like children and I doubt the mother would listen to me if she was already ignoring that amount of noise."

"As a parent, we hear that kind of noise about fifteen times a day," Anakin admitted. "We learn to tune it out or we'd never get anything done."

"I went through the express lane. Clearly it's more of a guideline than a rule if I was able to brazenly wave my eleventh item around without anyone caring," Mira said.

"How many do you think you'd need before anyone would say anything?" Anakin wondered.

"If it's small enough, I could probably get one more item before people got annoyed," Mira suggested. "Like gum, or a drink or something. Anything more than that is probably pushing my luck."

"Because you'd feel bad or because people would start being unpleasant about it?" Anakin asked.

"I'm not going to feel that bad if I take up am extra ten seconds of a person's time in line and they don't notice," Mira said. "But I don't want to annoy the cashier who has enough annoyances in their life, working a retail job for no money, and there's no good reason to annoy any customers behind me. Wait, is there a good reason to annoy them? Because if they're being jerks to begin with, I have no problem being an irritant. I'll take twelve packs of gum and point out that it's multiple copies of one item if there's a good reason."

"Well, I don't know if they are jerks, but I'm inclined to guess they are," Anakin said. "I don't like people."

Shock.

"Okay, until there's any evidence, I won't intentionally antagonize them," Mira said. She actually did like people! Her sarcastic nature just made it hard to see that sometimes.

About grocery shopping or anything else.

Today started eaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarly.
