Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Once again, the front lawn of the school had been set up to welcome the new students and teachers who were--assuming the bus trip went safely--arriving in Fandom for the first time. The goal was to create a friendly atmosphere to ease everyone into Fandom life, so the helpers had arranged the school's blue and gold tables everywhere, along with streamers and just a touch of glitter. Someday, the school would run out of glitter, but it would not be this day. There was also plenty of food to be shared next to the information tables, listing out siblings and teaching buddies and roommates, oh my.

Of course, no welcome picnic was allowed to run truly smoothly and the island, seemingly not wanting to miss out on the festivities, was blessing everyone with flower crowns. But hey, at least it wasn't raining something odd, right?

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!]

"Oh, yes." Cecil nodded. "Anna said the flowers probably won't last long. I'm a bit disappointed, honestly; they really brighten everything up, you know?"

He eyed the cookies. "Oh, they look yummy!" His eyes widened when he looked at them properly. "Are these wheat-based?" He held them carefully, in case they decided to become malevolent spirits on the spot.

"...Yes?" Sholeh said, confused. Cookies were made with flour, weren't they? That was how they were always made back home! "Oh! I didn't even stop to think! Do you have an allergy? I'm sorry. I can take them back if you'd like."

She could give them to someone else, so he wouldn't need to be bothered by them.

"Not an allergy," Cecil protested. "Just...are they safe?" He poked one suspiciously.

*...Why is he poking my cookies?* Zhahar was not sure if she should be offended by that.

"Umm, I think so?" Sholeh answered. "I didn't put anything bad in them." Except, you know, flour. "Isaac seemed to like his batch."

*No, seriously, he's poking at my cookies.*

::I know, Zhahar, I know.::

*But why?*

::Cultural bias?::

Cecil blinked, realizing. "Oh! Your wheat and wheat by-products never went bad?"

"Well, I guess wheat can go bad if improperly stored..." Sholeh mused. "Usually, though, I think the worst you have to worry about are mice in the grain and weevils in the flour. Not that there's anything like that here!"

Important to note: they did not use weevil-infested flour on this island.

"So, no?"

And definitely no evil spirits, giant snakes, or required quartentine.

Cecil grinned. "Really? No snakes or evil spirits? Oh, it's been so long since I've had any wheat!" He picked a tiny piece off the corner of one cookie. Surely if it did turn into a snake, it would just be a small one, right? He could eat a small snake, no problem!

~~Quarantine. Sigh, self.~~

"I've never seen a snake on the island," Sholeh said, looking down just in case. "Gremlins and squirrels, yes, but no snakes."

She didn't see the connection between wheat and wheat by-products and snakes, but if he did, well, all power too him.

Cecil bit his lip, looking mischievous. One of the few things he could do even better at fourteen. "Well, okay. Just don't let the sheriff's secret police find out!"

He nibbled the little piece. "Oh, these are delicious!" Because they were. And also possibly because he was a little wheat-deprived. He finished the cookie off in tiny bites, though. To savor it, and just in case.

"You mean the troopers?" Sholeh didn't think they were very secret. They kind of...tromped around a lot. "Why would they care if we eat cookies? Do they worry we're going to spoil our dinners?"

"Troopers?" He cocked his head at him, confused. "Oh! I bet you don't have them here. I meant back home, though. Wouldn't want them to think I was a nasty wheat addict."

"Is that a problem where you come from?" Sholeh asked, a little on the timid side.

*What does that even mean?* asked Zhahar, who was still not entirely over the cookie poking incident.

=His flower crown is looking at me and I don't like it,= Zeela declared.

"Sometimes." Cecil shook his head sadly. "It's hard for some people to give up a favored food, even when it becomes a malevolent spirit and turns against them." He brightened again. "But your wheat isn't evil! So that's good."

"Does that happen often where you're from?" Sholeh asked, her voice plaintive.

*He's got to be joking.*

=No, seriously, Sholeh, move around a little. THE EYE KEEPS STARING.=

"Well, the city council banned all wheat and wheat by-products as soon as it happened, so it couldn't happen again. But, um." He glanced around quickly, then leaned in closer. "There have been some wheat speakeasies and a bit of a black market, which I'm not supposed to know about. And so far everything's been okay, but still - it's taking a bit of a risk."

"Wheat--wheat speakeasies?" Uhhh. This was not how Sholeh had expected this conversation to go. Not at all. "W-Well, you can have all the wheat you want while you're here. No wheat-based malevolent spirits here."

Beat.

"Uhh, where did you say you were from again?"

=I'm going to punch that nasty little plant right in its EYE.=

*Relax, Zeela, it's just a flower!*

=A FLOWER THAT IS LOOKING AT ME!=

*You're not even in view!*

=IT STILL KNOWS I'M HERE!=

Forgive the wince, Cecil. It was just getting a bit loud in Sholeh's head.

"Wonderful!" Cecil beamed at her. "I'm from Night Vale. Sort of on the other side of the country, in the desert. It's a great little place." Okay, so maybe he was just a bit homesick. And radio-sick. And Carlos-sick.

He sighed, then tried to perk himself up again. "But, it is nice to have wheat again. And these are very good cookies. And the flowers are lovely!" He adjusted his crown on his head a bit. "And you're very sweet." If maybe a little odd. "So I'm just going to count it a win." He could do that.

Oh honey. Weird? Cecil didn't even know the ~~half~~ third of it.

"Night Vale?" Sholeh frowned and shook her head. "I've never heard of that place. But it gives me something to look up my next shift at the library!" And, like that, she was all smiles again.

Look, she really loved the library, okay?

"The library?" Cecil's eyes went wide. "You go in there often?" Wow, she was brave.

"Yup!" Sholeh said. "So much I got a job there."

She wasn't, you know, trying to brag or anything. Just...okay, maybe brag a little bit. But she got to work at the library and how cool was that!

"I work Wednesdays, if you ever want to come and visit!"

"Visit?" Cecil may have squeaked a bit there. He hated this whole puberty-again thing. "Um. Don't you...aren't there..." he whispered, "librarians??"

"Of course there are." Was he whispering because they were talking about the library? You only had to be quiet when you were in there! "Well, there's Mr. Constantine. He's the head librarian. And I guess we library aids are kind of...junior librarians?"

It was possible that what random transmogrification and weird happenings hadn't managed to do, Sholeh just had; Cecil looked terrified. "You are...but...um."

"Are you okay?" Sholeh stepped forward, raising a hand to touch Cecil on the arm. "Suddenly you don't look so good. Oh dear--might it have been the wheat after all?"

You were unfortunately Not Helping, Sholeh. Cecil did a quick check of the cookies, but...no, still cookies. Okay, no, the wheat was fine. It was just...

He looked from her hand on his arm to her eyes and her teeth, but she looked okay. "Just...If you really have to devour me, could I maybe write a letter home first?" He hadn't even told Carlos about all this yet. He'd be worried if Cecil never showed up, wouldn't he?
