Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Once again, the front lawn of the school had been set up to welcome the new students and teachers who were--assuming the bus trip went safely--arriving in Fandom for the first time. The goal was to create a friendly atmosphere to ease everyone into Fandom life, so the helpers had arranged the school's blue and gold tables everywhere, along with streamers and just a touch of glitter. Someday, the school would run out of glitter, but it would not be this day. There was also plenty of food to be shared next to the information tables, listing out siblings and teaching buddies and roommates, oh my.

Of course, no welcome picnic was allowed to run truly smoothly and the island, seemingly not wanting to miss out on the festivities, was blessing everyone with flower crowns. But hey, at least it wasn't raining something odd, right?

[OOC: This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic will be in post two in an effort to stop our browsers from dying. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers and townies!]

"Does that happen often where you're from?" Sholeh asked, her voice plaintive.

*He's got to be joking.*

=No, seriously, Sholeh, move around a little. THE EYE KEEPS STARING.=

"Well, the city council banned all wheat and wheat by-products as soon as it happened, so it couldn't happen again. But, um." He glanced around quickly, then leaned in closer. "There have been some wheat speakeasies and a bit of a black market, which I'm not supposed to know about. And so far everything's been okay, but still - it's taking a bit of a risk."

"Wheat--wheat speakeasies?" Uhhh. This was not how Sholeh had expected this conversation to go. Not at all. "W-Well, you can have all the wheat you want while you're here. No wheat-based malevolent spirits here."

Beat.

"Uhh, where did you say you were from again?"

=I'm going to punch that nasty little plant right in its EYE.=

*Relax, Zeela, it's just a flower!*

=A FLOWER THAT IS LOOKING AT ME!=

*You're not even in view!*

=IT STILL KNOWS I'M HERE!=

Forgive the wince, Cecil. It was just getting a bit loud in Sholeh's head.

"Wonderful!" Cecil beamed at her. "I'm from Night Vale. Sort of on the other side of the country, in the desert. It's a great little place." Okay, so maybe he was just a bit homesick. And radio-sick. And Carlos-sick.

He sighed, then tried to perk himself up again. "But, it is nice to have wheat again. And these are very good cookies. And the flowers are lovely!" He adjusted his crown on his head a bit. "And you're very sweet." If maybe a little odd. "So I'm just going to count it a win." He could do that.

Oh honey. Weird? Cecil didn't even know the ~~half~~ third of it.

"Night Vale?" Sholeh frowned and shook her head. "I've never heard of that place. But it gives me something to look up my next shift at the library!" And, like that, she was all smiles again.

Look, she really loved the library, okay?

"The library?" Cecil's eyes went wide. "You go in there often?" Wow, she was brave.

"Yup!" Sholeh said. "So much I got a job there."

She wasn't, you know, trying to brag or anything. Just...okay, maybe brag a little bit. But she got to work at the library and how cool was that!

"I work Wednesdays, if you ever want to come and visit!"

"Visit?" Cecil may have squeaked a bit there. He hated this whole puberty-again thing. "Um. Don't you...aren't there..." he whispered, "librarians??"

"Of course there are." Was he whispering because they were talking about the library? You only had to be quiet when you were in there! "Well, there's Mr. Constantine. He's the head librarian. And I guess we library aids are kind of...junior librarians?"

It was possible that what random transmogrification and weird happenings hadn't managed to do, Sholeh just had; Cecil looked terrified. "You are...but...um."

"Are you okay?" Sholeh stepped forward, raising a hand to touch Cecil on the arm. "Suddenly you don't look so good. Oh dear--might it have been the wheat after all?"

You were unfortunately Not Helping, Sholeh. Cecil did a quick check of the cookies, but...no, still cookies. Okay, no, the wheat was fine. It was just...

He looked from her hand on his arm to her eyes and her teeth, but she looked okay. "Just...If you really have to devour me, could I maybe write a letter home first?" He hadn't even told Carlos about all this yet. He'd be worried if Cecil never showed up, wouldn't he?

Aaaand that hand was sliding off his arm now. "Why would I devour you?" she asked, stepping backwards slightly. Did he know they were demons? Had someone told him? Did he think she was dangerous? They were dangerous? "I--I don't normally go in for devouring anyone."

"I promise I'm good to books and everything!" Cecil protested. "I don't ever hurt them unless they hurt me first, and I pay attention, and this one book was just a fluke, honest; I'm usually very on time with returns!"

Well, that made her feel a lot better about her new roommate, actually. She didn't know what she'd do if she'd ended up with someone who didn't treat books well!

"I believe you," she said, nodding. "And you should see our library! It's huge! I really think you'll like it!"

It had a biography section! With more than one biography in it!

Except that one time.

Big was good! Big meant more room to hide from librarians! Only she was one, and he was supposed to be rooming with her? He eyed her hands, but he hadn't felt claws. Maybe they didn't develop them until they were full-fledged?

"I don't...um. What's the fatality rate?" He hadn't really brought any weapons with him, except for his old high-school semiautomatic and a few canisters of tear gas.

"For the library?!" What kind of library was had a fatality rate?! "The...usual...?" she said, giving him an unsure shrug.

"I...don't know what that is," Cecil confessed. "I just know Night Vale's is well above average. It's really hard to find statistics on that sort of thing, which is a shame. I don't even know if it's because of our layout or if more folks are loud talkers or if our librarians are just extra deadly and vicious - not to be offensive! I'm sure you can be perfectly deadly when you have to be!"

Yeah, he was babbling. Sholeh might have to sit on him to get him to listen, at this rate.

Sholeh thought back to the break week and shook her head. "I really don't think I can be," she said. "I'm not very deadly at all."

=S'okay, little sister,= Zeela soothed. =I am.=

"I'm not sure about your library at all, but our library isn't like that. It's quiet and nice and, yeah, the books kind of misbehave some, but it isn't deadly." She paused. "Except maybe Special Collections. But no one should go in there anyway."

Not deadly? But she was a librarian! Sort of. "But, what do you do if someone mistreats the books? Or talks too loud? Or...or doesn't return a book on time?"

It was possible he had a vested interest in that last one. His voice was squeaking again.

The last two were easy enough to answer at least. The first one would take some thought. "Well, if they were too loud, I'd ask them to be quiet," she said, because that was easy enough to answer. "Though if no one else were there, they could probably be a little loud. And if books are late enough, we send overdue notices and there are fines."

But if someone were to mistreat a book... "I'm not sure what I'd say to someone deliberately harming a book, but they'd definitely get a piece of my mind. And maybe banned from the library!"

FATE WORSE THAN DEATH!

Cecil...blinked. "Fines?" Maybe he was misunderstanding. "You mean like body parts?"

People were allowed to be a little loud? They were asked to be quiet? What madness was this?

"I think it's more on the order of fifteen cents per day," Sholeh said, feeling now like she was almost letting him down. "Umm, you might not let you graduate if you have books that are really, really overdue and you still haven't brought them back?"

FEAR THEM, CECIL. FEAR THEM.

"But that's..." Cecil chewed his lip. "Just...money? That's all?"

"I could be wrong about the actual amount?" Sholeh said, "But, yeah. Just money. Not...whatever you're thinking. Umm, you might even be able to get away with just bringing the librarian a coffee or something."
