Friendship is Always in Fashion, Thursday - Period 1

Pinkie had spent ages today decorating the classroom to get the mood just right. There were fancy banners with stylized unicorn heads on the walls, golden columns topped with decorative hearts in the corners, and even a giant ice sculpture of a swan next to the door.

Pinkie herself was similarly decked out, wearing the dress Rarity had made her for the Grand Galloping Gala, and looking absolutely delighted to be there.

Because, well, one of the teachers should be, right?

And Derek, on the other hand, was just wearing a suit and tie for the occasion. No, he wasn't smiling. Don't get your hopes up, Pinkie Pie. His contribution to the decorations came in the form of nothing exploding glitter on the class. So. You're welcome, kids.

"Today you're learning about formalwear." Aaaaaaaaand, Derek?

That's alright, Derek, Pinkie was practically vibrating in anticipation and would gladly take up the explaining. "And haute couture!" she gleed. "Which is the fancy-pants way of saying an outfit is handmade and really fancy-pants!"

That was the technical definition, kids. I hope you're taking notes. Detailed notes.

Derek sighed, not about to correct the terminology. Because that meant more time talking to students than strictly necessary. "Suits for men, dresses for women. Sometimes suits for women. Just watch a red carpet sometime if you want to see more examples."

"And sometimes dresses for men, too," Pinkie noted, because hey, let's not leave anyone out here, Derek! "Like that purple sparkly one I found for you that would have really shown off your cheekbones."

Why did Derek submit himself to this class every week? Oh right. Because his life was pain. "I have a suit," he ground out. "I'm not wearing a dress."

No matter how flattering it looked with his shoulder to waist ratio.

"You're such a party pooper," Pinkie said, somehow managing to make it sound both sad and fond at the same time. "Anyway, kids, it's time to get your swank on!" Wait, their what? "We've got lots of dresses and suits of all sorts for everypony! Feel free to mix and match. That's where the real fashion comes from."

"Oh, well, yeah," Pinkie flicked one hoof in a 'no biggie' gesture. "Humans make that mistake aaaaaaaaaaaall the time around here. Human worlds are sadly lacking in proper ponies."

"WE SO ARE." She also now believed unicorns were real, and maybe Santa. "Can I take a picture with you? No one is ever going to believe me."

Well of course unicorns were real! Pinkie didn't know what a Santa was, though.

"Okay!" Pinkie bounced a few times in place. She was even dressed all fancy for the occasion! "Oooo, you should find a fancy outfit to wear for the picture! We have lots!"

Wow, this girl was even more excited by formal wear than Rarity was.

"Well sure! Ooooo, you could wear that sparkly purple number I found that Derek refused to wear! . . . Or something else, it's up to you!"

Far be it for Pinkie to dictate her style, after all. She'd only just met her.

"If Derek touched it, I want to wear it."

Which was not creepy AT ALL.

That actually made Pinkie blink a few times.

And then she had to think back about whether or not Derek actually touched it, or if he had just looked desperately lost and sad and then said "no" in no uncertain terms and gave Pinkie that look that reminded her she'd just forced him into glam make up last week and she should maaaaaaaaaaaybe let up on him just an eensy bit this week.

You know, so she could do the big wibbly eyes on him next week and get him to wear something properly shiny again.

"Okay!" she said finally -- that was a lot of thinking, she'd kinda spaced out for a moment. "I think it's over on this rack!" And she trotted over to one of the racks of formal wear, popped up on her hind legs, and used her front hooves to sort through the outfits, her tongue sticking ever so slightly out of her mouth.

"It is SO. COOL. how you do that," Megan said, getting her phone out to snap a picture. This was going straight to Tumblr. She'd get sooooo many notes!

"I dunno," Pinkie said casually. People asked her how she did things all the time, and the answer was always the same. "I just do."

She found the dress and pulled it out, hoof wrapped around the hanger in a way that no hoof should ever be able to wrap about anything. "Here it is!" She trotted on three legs back over, dress held high in the air to keep it from dragging on the ground as she went. "It doesn't have as many ruffles as I'd hoped, but that's what you get when you haven't made friends with any fashion designers on the island yet!"

Megan gasped.

"FASHION DESIGNER AU. THAT IS THE BEST IDEA."

"OMIGOSH IT TOTALLY IS!" Give it a moment. . . . "What's an AU?"

"Alternate universe," Megan explained. "So like, you take all the characters you love and put them somewhere where everyone works in a coffee shop or a pirate ship or live in 1900s France and then you see how they all act together. And make them kiss!"

Yep, she'd completely lost the pony.

"Why would you make anypony kiss anypony else? Kisses should come when both ponies just want to kiss each other."

A lesson on consent from the cartoon pony. Yep.

"It's not weird," Megan assured her. "It's only characters! And sometimes people have soooo much chemistry and the show doesn't do anything about it so you have to make yourself happy by letting them be happy. With kissing."

"Oh," Pinkie said. "Well, I guess if it's just a story?"

She didn't sound even remotely sure of that, no. Stories had power, m'kay? Like friendship had power. You could defeat weird spooky sky horses made of clouds with stories.

"And if everypony is happy. That's the most important part."
