Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd for those who needed a little more space to process. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OOC: This is part two of the picnic, separated in an effort to save our browsers for as long as possible. Part one, to run into siblings, roommates and teachers, is over here, though teachers are also welcome in this post, of course. Because the picnic is outside, it is open to all students, teachers and townies.]

Cordelia still wasn't sure about this picnic thing, but she had to admit that it was pretty cool of the school to throw a party to welcome her.

...and those other kids, fine, whatever.

She got a bottle of water, since dying of heat-related thirst wasn't cute, and stood somewhere nice and obvious to check people out. Especially the boys.

Jessica was just generally making the rounds looking for people when she spotted an unfamiliar face. "Hey, new girl. Welcome to Fandom," Jessica said.

"Thanks," Cordelia said, looking over at her. "I go by Cordelia, though."

"I think that's a mistake. 'Newgirl' is going to be a very popular name in a few years, and you'd be able to say you had it first," Jessica said. "I'm Jessica."

"I actually think I might know someone who had it..." Everyone in Sunnydale had a weird name, okay? "Anyway, guessing you're not new?"

"And here I thought I was joking," Jessica said. "But nope. I've been here nearly a year now and I have the yearbook to prove it."

"You didn't bring it with you, did you?" Cordelia checked. "Because that would be weird."

"Here to the picnic? No. It's up in my dorm room," Jessica said. "It usually only leaves the dorm room if I have a wobbly chair."

"Then I guess those things are good for something." Shh, someone was still mourning the loss of popularity for a cheating loser boyfriend.

"They're good for plenty. Like squashing bugs and reminding you just how many people want you to stay sweet because they couldn't think of something more profound," Jessica noted.

"I never got those messages." She was popular, see.

"Don't tell me, you started off way too sweet," Jessica joked.

"Actually I'm pretty sure no one thought I was sweet to begin with." She wasn't bothered by that.

Well, one of the boys was definitely checking back.

"You're new."

"And you're missing some clothing." Not that she minded, even if he did have too many tattoos for her taste. She could ignore those for now. Look at all the ignoring that was happening!

"It's traditional," Cade said, nodding. "It's a way to make newbies feel welcome."

"There are worse greetings." Of course, she hadn't gotten through her whole day yet. "I'm Cordelia."

"Cade," he replied. "Where are you from? I'll pretend I know where it is."

"Sunnydale? It's in California," she explained. "Don't worry, nobody's heard of it. Maybe if they watch the news, I guess."

"I've figured out where California is?" Cade offered. "It's...west, right?"

"...Yeah," she said slowly. "How do you not know where California is?"

"I'm not from around here," Cade replied. "How much have you heard about this place so far?"

"Time travel, alternate universes, and the world has two Buffies, or something," she said. "You're not from some universe where California fell off into the ocean, right? Because that's totally a myth."

"I'm from a galaxy that doesn't even have a California," Cade offered.

There was a pause.

"I'm sorry, I think I just had a stroke. Can you repeat that?"
