Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd for those who needed a little more space to process. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OOC: This is part two of the picnic, separated in an effort to save our browsers for as long as possible. Part one, to run into siblings, roommates and teachers, is over here, though teachers are also welcome in this post, of course. Because the picnic is outside, it is open to all students, teachers and townies.]

Alec was going to drink one bottle of water, and then he was going to call it a day. Yes.

Even after a year in Fandom, he still didn't like the picnics. Admittedly, his insistence on wearing a sweater with the sleeves only pushed up as far as his elbows probably didn't help.

"Guess whooooo."

Hey, Alec! Who was your favourite bleach-blonde raccoon-eyed punk kid on the island, coming up behind you to cover your eyes?

If you guessed 'Sparkle,' you would be allowed to keep your boyfriend, who would be horribly put out and might require some ass-patting otherwise.

"You've done this before, and you're the only one who ever does it," Alec remarked, dryly amused but letting Sparkle have his fun. "Sparkle."

"Maybe one of these days, it won't be me," Sparkle reasoned, dropping his hands so that he could drape his arms over Alec's shoulders from behind, grinning merrily. He was in a good mood today, dammit. "Maybe next time, I'll pay someone off to do it in my place, and then what'll you do?"

Besides be forewarned about it, and all.

Alec took his time answering that one, even as he turned around inside the loop of Sparkle's arms so they were facing each other. "If I told you that my training would take over and I might elbow them in the face, would that sufficiently discourage you from doing it?"

"Nah," Sparkle decided, standing up on his toes and soliciting a kiss from Alec, since they were already there. "It just means I'd be way more likely to ask somebody I don't like."

Two birds! One stone! Win all around!

"I'm sure I can find someone around here, you know."

"And here I thought you were the kind of bubbly person who was friends with everyone," Alec said after he drew back from the kiss. He was never going to be entirely used to the public displays of affection he and Sparkle seemed to exchange all over campus these days, but 'used to' and 'fond of' were two entirely different things, and he was very fond of them. "I'd hate for your reputation to slip."

Really, Sparkle wasn't exactly used to them, himself. But he was damn pleased about them. Nobody cared! Did Alec notice that? Nobody around here cared?

"Oh, man. I totally forgot about my reputation," Sparkle laughed, lightly smacking himself on the side of the head. "Damn, I wouldn't want people to think that I was trouble or something. That kind of shit takes years to get past, you know."

There seemed to be a startlingly small amount of caring, it was true. And Alec was usually the type to inflate even small reactions into big ones in his own mind, so this was truly novel.

"If it helps, the hair does make you seem a little more..." 'Angelic' sprung to mind, but Alec didn't tend to toss that word around for Shadowhunter reasons. "Innocent," he filled in instead. "Speaking of which."

It was probably for the best that Alec didn't bust out the 'a' word, there. Sparkle probably would have started laughing and just kept going until he managed to hurt something, if he had.

"Innocent, huh?" Sparkle leaned back and ran a hand through his hair. "Is that a good thing? You figure going blonde will keep me from being the first suspect every time someone shoplifts from Turtle and Canary now, or something?"

No, Sparkle. Nothing would ever change that.

"There's at least a small chance," Alec decided. And, because his status as a (mostly) law-abiding good guy required him to follow up on something like that, he felt compelled to add, "...Were you really?"

"Only sometimes," Sparkle replied, giving his shoulders a dismissive sort of shrug.

You know. Whenever Kenzi wasn't around.

"Not so much, lately."

He was way better at not getting caught, these days.

Alec gave a sigh that was mostly for theatrical effect, running his thumb over Sparkle's cheek. "If you ever need someone to post bail," he sighed, "I'd be willing to do that."

"See, this is how I know you're serious about this relationship," Sparkle laughed, even as he leaned his head a little, against Alec's hand. "No lectures, no 'I'm so disappointed in you, Sparks, you're better than this.' Just an offer to post bail. Babe, you know exactly what kind of encouragement I need in life."

... The thing was, it was all true. Sparkle was less likely to try to get himself into shit if he knew there was an easy way out of it again. That was one of the many contrary little quirks that made Sparkle tick.

"Well, you didn't say you really did it," Alec reasoned. "And even if you did, it's not like I've never broken and entered before."

Robbery was another matter, but Shadowhunters did take weapons from churches, so...?

... Alec actually made a fair point, there. Sparkle pursed his lips for a moment, and then nodded, deciding that his logic was sound enough.

"Though you're probably not exactly doing it for kicks," he noted.

"Not really, no," Alec granted.

And he didn't think Sparkle should either, but he also didn't know that Sparkle had been doing it just for kicks. So.

Sparkle was a mystery, that way! An enigma! A big mess of trouble. Poor Alec for having to deal with him, really.

"And good job on that, by the way," he decided, giving Alec's shoulder a light clap with his hand, all while holding that same lopsided grin of his. "All of that 'doing the right thing' and all that. It's way harder than it looks."

"Thanks," Alec said, offering a little bit of a wry smile back. "It's... not really that hard, but maybe I've just had a lot of practice."

"Pretty sure you've had more than most people I know," Sparkle pointed out. "If it was so easy, I'm sure more people would take the time to try to do it, you know?"

Well. Maybe not Sparkle.

"You do too, you know," Alec pointed out. "Not with the stealing, I guess, but you don't go around attacking people for kicks."

"Well, no," Sparkle replied, raising an eyebrow. "Because that would be fucking stupid. Especially around here. I'd get totally creamed."

Okay, fair. "But, on top of that," Alec prompted, "you don't want to randomly hurt people, either."

So, good person.

"Well, no. Not unless they've got it coming to them," Sparkle replied with a shrug. "And I like fucking around with people's heads. Doesn't that count?"

"I don't know that that's necessarily a good person thing, but I don't think it's a bad person thing either," Alec said. "I think you balance out."
