Try Not to Die!!! [Tuesday, May 21, 2013]

The Skywalkers were standing in the lobby of the Portalocity office like last week, looking relaxed. "Hopefully you enjoyed last week's class," Ben began. "Today the portal's going to take you to Amsterdam, the Netherlands, which is on the same continent as England last week, but in a different country."

Shh, someone had been learning about Earth geography and wanted to show off a bit.

Anakin looked dryly amused at that little aside. "Today you will have the choice of two different activities as detours, and then a roadblock that you all must complete. We will meet you at the end of the course. Remember that this is not a simulation, so if you annoy the locals, you are actually annoying locals. Avoid that. Your class begins...now."

Maddie knew herself well enough to know that hoisting furniture up anything was going to result in bad things, so she went for the second option. She actually didn't have a big problem finding the bikes; one she found almost accidentally right away and that was what made her figure out the clue, and then she had to hunt down the second one.

And what was a five mile bike ride, really.

Alex didn't want anything to do with riding a bike for five miles, so she chose to hoist furniture. She had a bit of trouble with the first two pieces, but once she got the hang of it, she got through the rest of the task with ease.

Re: Detour: Hoist it or Hunt It

[identity profile] theoplustwo.livejournal.com 2013-05-21 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Theo didn't know why but he went with Hoist It because it seemed more straightforward than the other option.

Of course, as soon as he started hoisting things up and his arms (and Ange and Dev) started screaming at him, he started regretting the decision. There wasn't any real way to cut corners here like when he'd been running track but that didn't stop Dev from jabbering at him to do something.

That distraction cost him a little time but he did manage to get the furniture hoisted.

Gert would rather do almost anything over riding a bike five miles, so, furniture it was.

A helpful but bemused Dutch woman in a sundress helped her tie the chairs to a rope (though she also seemed to be tweeting this) one by one, and while it proved mostly hellish, at least the exercise was mostly upper-body and not bike-induced. That was better.

Of course Liara picked the 'Hoist It' option - it was really the only sane one for a woman who could manipulate gravity.

She got it all done in record time, too. So far, so good.

Victor joined the bulk of his classmates in hoisting things, and almost immediately regretted it. It seemed like the rope kept slipping out of his hands as he tried to tie it to things, and the Dutch person who was supposed to help him ... didn't.

Out of sheer stubbornness he stuck with the task, but he could tell he'd lost a lot of time when he finished.

She was totally going for the bikes. Emily could've probably done the lifting, but she honestly didn't feel like tiring herself like that. Besides, she had a pretty good attention to detail.

Still, it did take her longer than she thought, and her patience was running thin when she bumped into the second bike. The five mile ride was actually liberating, as she had to put the annoyance somewhere.

[identity profile] notyetplatypus.livejournal.com 2013-05-21 03:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Chaz decided that using parts of his brain that no one else had didn't count as cheating, calculated the weight of the furniture and went to deal with the bicycles.

It took him a few minutes to find the bikes, mostly because he was still cheating. He did take time while biking to eat his emergency energy bar.

All things considered, riding a bike five miles was no big deal compared to traversing half the surface of Yavin 4 on an incredibly slow makeshift speeder, but given the option of hoisting furniture instead, well.

That wasn't really much of an effort with Anakin's command of the Force.

At all.

Korra decided to hoist furniture.

Pity she tugged hard enough on the rope to break the pulley, then. It was probably going to take a while to fix it now.

Raven was actually quite excited to be in Amsterdam -- she'd just read The Diary of a Young Girl when it came out stateside the year before. She didn't even hesitate before heading for the bicycle lot to hunt down the bikes and ride to the attendant. Finding the bikes didn't take too long. Riding the five miles on the other hand. . . .

Well, she might have gotten distracted and taken a few detours from her detour. How often did you get a chance to ride through Amsterdam? For class, even.

Hoist it. Definitely. It helped being a bit stronger than the average human. She made sure to thank the local helping her attach the furniture, then just smiled at his surprise at how quickly she managed it.

Okay now Maddie was regretting the bike ride. She was already tired, which would probably be part of why her first attempt at this ended in her landing in mud. And of course, once she'd ended up in mud, that made it just a little harder to not fall after that, because a muddy Maddie and a pole were unmeshy things.

She just about did a dance when she finished this one.

Re: Roadblock: Fierljeppen

[identity profile] theoplustwo.livejournal.com 2013-05-21 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Theo eyed the mud pit and the stick. Yeah, this wasn't going to go well.

"Give it your best shot, Theo." That was Ange's advice.

Theo grabbed the stick and ran towards the mud pit. His stick hit the ground and he leaped and...landed sideways in the mud.

Well, great. He went back to try again and eventually did make it over on his fourth attempt.

Dev was laughing at him hysterically.

What.

"Pretty sure I'm too short for this activity," Gert remarked with certainty as she surveyed the mud pit.

And she was right. She fell in a really ridiculous amount of times.

[identity profile] lil-nikita.livejournal.com 2013-05-21 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
When Alex stared at the ditch, she was certain she wasn't getting out of this without getting muddy. She was right. After falling in the mud a few times, she finally made it across.

Good thing, too, because she was ready to throw the pole in frustration.

Re: Roadblock: Fierljeppen

In theory, gravity warping skills should make this easy, correct? That was the theory with which Liara had tackled this challenge.

Sadly, actually using her biotics to keep up her weight on a small pole turned out to be much harder than anticipated. Not only that, but the light show was seriously confusing the local Frisians.

Not to mention the one cow eyeballing her from an adjacent field.

She tried again. And again. And again.

In the end, it was the one try fueled only by pure annoyance and exasperation - no biotics at all - that got her across. But at this point she was covered from tip to toe in dark sludge.

At least nobody could tell she was blue any longer?

Re: Roadblock: Fierljeppen

[personal profile] ultron_junior 2013-05-21 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously?

Victor wasn't really much for track-and-field type activities, and the fact he was relatively heavy for his height made balancing with the pole even harder. He made it -- mostly by luck -- but only after getting pretty well covered by mud.

He was beginning to hate today.

[identity profile] reven8e.livejournal.com 2013-05-21 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Emily took her time to do the jump. She really took her time, as if she was making some weird kind of communion with the pole and the mud. In fact she was just quietly freaking out because she wasn't a fan of ruining her clothes after suffering all morning to look good in them.

Long story short, Emily did it in her first try. She ended up falling face first in the ground though, because nothing came free. At least she avoided the mud?
