Language Classes, Tuesday
All language students:
If you have requested to join a class, consider yourself enrolled. Class rosters will be updated throughout the week. Remember that Friday is your last day to ADD or DROP a class.
Because we have so many new people, all vocabulary quizzes are postponed until next week. We will still be doing sign-ups for class presentations this week: I would like to start those in two weeks.
I will cover last week's lectures during lab hours this week, except for Friday: this Friday's lab hours will be a showing of Wings of Desire, open to all interested students. I strongly encourage European language students to attend.
There are no office hours today but I will be available during lab hours.
[ooc: Usual deal. Talk amongst yourselves.]

Cat TTh 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
I hope you enjoyed your experience as cats last week. We'll be doing that again in a few minutes. This time, I want you to observe any differences in the way your senses interact in your normal form and in feline form.
Your homework for next time is 200 words on your cat experience so far, focusing on sense of smell and touch.
Re: Cat TTh 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
Before we are transformed, I have a question for you, sir. Based on personal observations, I'm aware that animals often "inflect" their barks or purrs or chirps on an individual level. Therefore, I was curious as to whether there are different dialects of Cat, much the same way that English has the American, Australian, British and Canadian dialects.
(OOC: The beverages cause intense dreams the next time we sleep, right?)
Re: Cat TTh 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
But, as speakers of the same language can get at least the 'gist' of even the deepest regional accent, so can all animals basically understand one another.
[ooc: Yup. It's from the Dreaming, basically: being of dreams, it affects dreams.]
Re: Cat TTh 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
(OOC: Oh, this is gonna be good! ::evil grin:: This version of Beast is suppressing some intense and horrible memories and will probably have screaming nightmares all night. You may want to show up later tonight.)
Re: Cat TTh 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
[ooc: Cool.]

*fills up a cup with half coffee, half juice*
Re: Cat TTh 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
*takes a cup of coffee and adds a massive amount of sugar to it.*

Re: Cat TTh 8:00 - 10:00 a.m.
Yeah, it's really wonky.

Languages classes: open lab
Languages of Europe, TTh 1:00 - 3:00
Last time we discussed language families. Today we'll start with grammar.
Who can tell me what an inflected language is?
Re: Languages of Europe, TTh 1:00 - 3:00
Inflected languages would be ones that grammatically change words to show tense and gender and stuff, wouldn't it? Like in Latin, where you have to conjugate things all the time.
Hey, this tastes kind of funny.
Re: Languages of Europe, TTh 1:00 - 3:00
So we'll start with going over parts of speech.
[ooc: argh. need to find an easier way to convey Dream's speech.]

"Of course, sir."
*she'd clearly rather be anywhere else*
Re: Languages of Europe, TTh 1:00 - 3:00
*he knows the answer but it's polite to ask*
Re: Languages of Europe, TTh 1:00 - 3:00
Sometimes.
I can handle it.
Re: Languages of Europe, TTh 1:00 - 3:00
Re: Languages of Europe, TTh 1:00 - 3:00
Would... would it make it so I didn't have to remember?
*finally looks up at him*
Re: Languages of Europe, TTh 1:00 - 3:00
Re: Languages of Europe, TTh 1:00 - 3:00
I want to not be afraid.
*she bites her lips*
I'll think about it, sir.
Thank you

Nightmares can't hurt you, Ms. Parker, but they can hinder you.
Get some rest.
*at least they can't now that he know where the Corinthian is . . .*

History of English, TTh 3:00 - 4:00
Today we'll continue the discussion of the phonetic alphabet. Everyone please take a handout. There will be a quiz on the symbols next time.
I have an assignment for all of you, due a week from Thursday: find someone with an accent different from your own, record them speaking for about a minute, and try to write the differences between the way they pronounce common words and you do in the phonetic alphabet.
