Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There were plenty of tables and chairs scattered around the lawn for anyone who wanted to sit down once they'd had their fill of the buffet, or to recover from starting to find out what this place was all about. No one would judge the need to take a mental breather.

Some of the tables were out in the open, for those who weren't allergic to the sun, and some of the tables were in the shade, or far from the rest of the crowd. Wherever people decided to rest, there was space enough for everyone.

[OCD is up! This is the post for general mingling! Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Sparkle had spent a lot of the morning deliberating with himself over whether or not he actually wanted to show up to this thing. And then a little of the morning realizing just how ridiculous he was being. Of course he wanted to come to the picnic. There was fresh meat and free food, not even necessarily in that order. And... well... there might be other people, here, too.

He'd staked out a claim on one end of the food table, and was alternating between stuffing sandwiches in his bag and pieces of fruit into his mouth while he checked out the new faces.

Suckers.

"Anybody interesting yet?" Victor asked, both because he figured Sparkle would have noticed and because it had been a while since he caught up with the guy.

"Girl fell out of a portal near the edge of the picnic," Sparkle offered, right along with a grin directed toward Victor. It had been a while, yeah. "So far no, like, breakdowns or anything, though. Not that I've seen, anyhow. Kind of hoping for one or two. It'd make these picnic events way more interesting."

He was here for the food, mostly.

"Or a really flashy fight with powers," Victor suggested, laughing a little. "All these different realities, and we never seem to get mortal enemies."

So far.

"Portal?" he scanned the crowd, like the girl was going to have a HEY I CAME FROM A PORTAL sign around her neck.

"Man, I am so not the mortal enemies sort," Sparkle snorted. "Pit me up against powers, and you'll be peeling me off the grass, like, ten seconds later. Anyhow, I didn't go talk to her, looked like Cade and Loki had it handled. I'm about as shit at dealing with girls freaking out as I am at fighting people with powers, anyhow."

That wasn't true, not really, but Sparks wasn't exactly on the top of his game today, either.

Victor gave Sparkle a confused look at that -- since, yeah, Sparkle had always seemed like he'd be okay at handling upset people. "Good thing nobody's asking us to do either one," he said. That seemed safe. "Freaked out girls can get scary fast."

"Have a lot of freaked out girls turn on you and like go for the eyes or something?"

Sparkle was actually curious about that, yes. He was trying to figure out a way to make up to someone that he'd kind of... killed... in that dungeon thing, and he didn't have the foggiest idea where to start.

"No!" Victor protested. "Just used to be on a team that was practically all girls. Sometimes it got intense. More yelling, less eye-clawing."

"Oooooh." Sparkle gave a small, knowing sort of nod. "Yeah. Girls'll do that. Usually it's like hormones and things. I've lived with enough girls over the years, I should know."

It was something like that, anyhow. It probably didn't help that he was living in a home for troubled kids with no place else to go, mind.

"Stuff hits them hard," Victor nodded, jamming his hands in his pockets. "So how have you been? Anybody try to claw your eyes out lately?"

"Depends on your definition, I guess," Sparkle replied, shrugging. "Went on a bit of a road trip with Atton. I must have gotten into some good trouble somewhere along the way. I mean, I don't remember half the trip."

That juma juice stuff was brutal.

Victor raised his eyebrows slightly, impressed. "No way I could have kept up on that one. Where'd you guys go?"

"Planet called Nar Shaddaa," Sparkle replied with a shrug of his shoulders. "Far as I can tell, the whole place is cities full of neon lights and, like, flying cars. It was fucking awesome."

Yeah, Sparkle would go back.

Mostly for the cantinas.

"Jealous," Victor said. "I really want to drive a flying car sometime. Flight class isn't the same thing."

"Yeah, I... kind of didn't get to fly one, though." Sparkle wrinkled his nose a little bit. "Maybe next time, if, like, I lose my mind and go back to that place. By the end of the week, I was a stowaway on a transport ship to some other backwater planet, surrounded by dancers. I'm... still pretty sure I didn't sign on as one, myself, but I have no way of knowing."

Funny, that.

"That part I'm not so much jealous of," Victor decided. "How'd you get back home?"

"Traveling with someone who knows his way around," Sparks replied with a shrug. "And, like, pre-booked Portalocity tickets. We just transferred them to Ord Mantell, where we ended up after we weren't jettisoned into space."

Always a good way to be. Being shot out of an airlock would have been a crappy end to an otherwise pretty awesome round of escapism.

"Nice," Victor said. "I had a way duller break. Watched a lot of TV, inherited Topher's robot dog for the summer, split up with Olive."

Yeah, one of those things was not like the other.

That would be the TV thing, right?

"Shitty deal," Sparkle replied eloquently. "What happened, man?"

Far as he could tell, Olive and Victor had been a pretty good combination.

Victor scuffed his shoes through the grass. "Nothing. Nobody cheated or whatever. But her college is in L.A., and neither of us felt like we could do the long-distance relationship thing. Better we stay friends."

He was trying very hard to believe this. Mostly because he thought it was true, even if it sucked.

"But ... yeah. It's hard."

"Not really meant to be easy," Sparkle noted with a little frown. "But there's a reason most sane people don't do it, yeah. Shit like that's hard to maintain."

Not that Sparks had ever tried, himself, but he did watch television.

... And he was kind of dating a guy who was older than him. He didn't want to think too hard about what happened when it was Alec's turn to graduate and Sparks was the one getting left behind.

"One bad thing about the whole interdimensional nexus thing," Victor said philosophically. "No matter how much you like somebody, probably they're gonna go home and it's not gonna be your home, and all your choices suck."

"Yeah," Sparkle replied. "Shit, I got friends here from Toronto. You think it's my Toronto? No, of course it's not. Unless my Toronto has, like, fairies or whatever and nobody ever fucking told me."

... Which could be a possibility, granted.

"This place is such a freaking tease. And all this on top of the 'weirdness follows you home,' and 'while you're here, it's going to try to fucking kill you' things."

Sparkle had issues with Fandom. A bit.

"I can practically get killed at home, too," Victor pointed out. "This place is just more ... I dunno. Intense about it, sometimes."

At home he didn't tend to get actually killed.

"But yeah, it's kind of a shit deal for the people who started out from from weirdass worlds without powers."

"What's so weirdass about worlds without powers, anyhow? At least our worlds are consistent about it." Sparkle shrugged. "Find me, like, three different realities with powers that actually agree on how the damn things are supposed to work."
