Ethics [Thursday, April 25, 2013, 2nd period]

"Welcome to our final class together," Anakin said as he passed out the exams. "I hope you've learned something about yourselves in our time together so that when you're faced with a tough situation, you can make a choice you can live with."

That's what passed for as touchy-feely from Anakin, folks. Sorry. "There are no right and wrong answers on this exam, but I do want you to explain your answer. Don't answer what you think I want to hear--answer how you'd honestly react."

"Well, it turned out to be pretty exciting," Anakin explained. 'Exciting,' of course, came with a default 90% chance of including 'getting shot at.'

Anakin, having spent a number of years as a Skywalker, guessed, "You got shot at?"

A very clear 'oops, busted' look crossed Anakin's face, but he grinned sheepishly. "When don't we?"

"Good point," Anakin admitted. "It's really not fair. We're such charming people if they'd stop shooting at us first."

Which got a genuine laugh out of Anakin. "And then they have to ruin their chance to find that out."

"And then they're all 'ow, I don't have an arm now' and it's so awkward to try to start being friends after that," Anakin said.

Your grandfather is a dork, Anakin. Sorry.

Yeah, excuse Anakin while he stared with his mouth hanging open for a little while.

"Wow," he finally said, "I wouldn't have guessed, but now I know where the family sense of humor comes from."

"You're welcome," Anakin said with a tiny smile.

Anakin grinned back at him. "Thanks, actually."

Anakin looked surprised. "Really?"

"Yeah," Anakin said, chewing on his lower lip as he tried to pick his words. "As legacies go, that's a pretty good one."

Unspoken, but implied, was that this was in comparison to what he'd known before.

"Obi-Wan didn't appreciate my sense of humor," Anakin said.

Anakin tilted his head and smiled crookedly. "I hear it's an acquired taste."

Seriously, he missed the days when Jacen cracked bad jokes far more often than he offered condescending lectures.

"Obi-Wan said he didn't care to acquire it," Anakin said in a fairly credible imitation of Obi-Wan's accent.

While Anakin could understand why . . .

"That's too bad," he said, shaking his head. "It's part of our charm."

"That's what I tried to explain to him," Anakin said, a decided note of fondness in his voice.

That jarred Anakin somehow; it was hard to reconcile that clear affection with Uncle Luke's story of watching Vader cut Obi-Wan down, but he'd figure out how to do it.

"He wasn't persuaded?"

"He didn't buy most of my stories," Anakin said. "I got a lot of 'oh, Anakin' during my training."

". . . now I wonder if that goes with the name, too."

Yes, because the tendency to be exasperating did.

Anakin laughed. "It might. You're the only other Anakin I know personally. It was apparently a fairly common baby name for a while..."

"Why couldn't that have lasted a while longer?" Anakin asked, a distinctly whining note in his voice. "I'm the only other one I know of."

That was likely to change in a couple of years. Not that he'd know about it when it did.

"Could have been worse," Anakin said. "You could have been named Obi-Wan. Now there's a name that dates you."

"Okay, good point," Anakin conceded, laughing (just a bit). "Were there a lot of those, too?"

"Less than Anakins," Anakin said, "though there were at least a billion younglings all over the galaxy playing Skywalker and Kenobi at any given moment during the Clone Wars."

Anakin considered that, and his eyes widened. "From what Valin and Sannah were saying, there must be a lot of kids pretending to be me, then."

He looked more disturbed by that than anything, but he was a tiny bit pleased, to tell the truth.
