Ethics [Thursday, April 25, 2013, 2nd period]

"Welcome to our final class together," Anakin said as he passed out the exams. "I hope you've learned something about yourselves in our time together so that when you're faced with a tough situation, you can make a choice you can live with."

That's what passed for as touchy-feely from Anakin, folks. Sorry. "There are no right and wrong answers on this exam, but I do want you to explain your answer. Don't answer what you think I want to hear--answer how you'd honestly react."

Ready for summer.

You arrive home after an extended period away to discover the person closest to you has been kidnapped and is presumed dead. What do you do and why?

a) Mourn and move on.
b) Brood about it constantly. Perhaps write poetry.
c) Ignore the idea that she might be dead and go after her yourself. Upon finding her remains, torch the village she was in.
d) None of the above.

You're an excellent swimmer out for a walk in your new, extremely expensive, non-water resistant outfit. You hear the screams of a teenager crying for help from the water. There is no danger to yourself if you attempt a rescue. What do you do?

a) Rescue the kid.
b) Keep on walking. There is no moral imperative to save people and no legal obligation to try.
c) Try to find someone else to help.
d) None of the above.

You're a carjacker plying your trade, and your latest victim turns out to be a martial arts expert who puts you in the hospital for a week. What do you do?

a) Take this as a warning from a higher power and find a new line of work.
b) Just find a new line of work.
c) Track the guy down and attempt to sue him for assault. Hospital bills don't pay themselves.
d) None of the above.

A rebel who has threatened to explode several bombs in crowded areas has been caught. Unfortunately, she has already planted the bombs and they are scheduled to go off in a short time. It's possible that hundreds of people may die and the authorities cannot make her divulge the location of the bombs by conventional methods. In exasperation, some high level official suggests torture. This would be illegal, of course, but the official thinks that it is nevertheless the right thing to do in this desperate situation. What do you do and why?

a) Torture her to get the information. There's no time left to be reasonable.
b) Torture her and her family to get the information, then blow up her planet. If you're going to do something illegal, might as well be really, really thorough.
c) Continue working through the the legal structure of the judicial system and hope for the best.
d) None of the above. Perhaps your dimension works differently?

As a "special honor", the authorities who have captured you and your children will let you choose one of them not to die immediately. You will never see the other one again, as the two of you remaining will be sent to languish in the spice mines of Kessel, which are not known for their low mortality rates. Do you choose your older son or your younger daughter? And how do you deal with the guilt?

a) You choose to let your son live. He's older and might survive the intense labor in the spice mines.
b) You choose to let your daughter live. She's younger--perhaps one of the other prisoners will take pity on her and assist her.
c. There is no c in this question.

He's getting ready for another summer in Fandom.

Maddie circled C, but she scratched out the bit about torching the village because really now. ~~Though she might have actually done just that.~~

Maddie went with A and was ready to judge anyone who said they put anything else.

Maddie stared at that question a few times, put B, and then wrote in the magin, Why am I a carjacker???

Okay, Maddie would be a little happy when this class was over and she could stop realizing things about herself, because she put A.

And put like a dozen exclamation points after B. What was this.

...Yeah, glad when this class was over.

C. ~~There is no c in this question.~~ Oh, there's a C.

This was why people should wonder about her, really.

D. I would try to find the person who kidnapped him or her and make them pay. I guess that's close to C, but I wouldn't target a whole village. That seems like overkill.

Victor circled A, and couldn't understand why anyone would pick anything else.

Victor hesitated between a and b -- he wasn't sure how much effort God put into stopping random carjackers -- but circled b.

Victor wasn't so into the idea of torture, but there was no way the courts were going to do jack in a situation like this. He circled A, reluctantly.

I'd try not to torture her too much.

Victor refused to circle either of the options. He crossed out C and wrote in, I go down fighting for all three of us.

And then he circled it. Heavily.

Anakin had to get back to the Errant Venture to spend some time with Tahiri, but one of the reasons he'd come back to Fandom was that he really, really wanted to talk to his grandfather.

He waited until the end of the class to drop in and leaned in the doorway, looking a little older and more sober than he had before he left. "Hi."

Anakin didn't try to hide his relief to see his grandson. "You're back."
