He gave a nod of hi when he saw Rory.

Angel suddenly had a mental image of being attacked by a kitten.

"Um?"

Angel took a step back. "You know, sadly that doesn't narrow it down by enough."

"You, you can hunt vampires all the live-long day--or night, I guess--if you like. I figure if anybody's got the necessary experience, it's you. But you are so squalling lucky nobody got themselves killed."

"I think everybody did pretty good," Angel said.

"Did what we could," Angel said. "Kept the non-fighters home, split up the ones who were going into good teams so we spread out the talent."

"And a seething mass of resentment," she said in a weirdly agreeable tone of voice. "But mostly doubt."

"Okay, see, well, I'm not good with sensing stuff," Angel said. He tried for a self-depricating smile.

Rory waved at Angel, grinning. "Hi! How are you, Angel?"

"Okay." He veered course to come say hi to her. "Yourself?"

"I'm pretty good," Rory said. She might possibly be understating things a bit, but hey, sneakiness. "How'd Cal like the shiny thing?"

"She liked the shiny thing," Angel said. Now that there was no danger of the surprise being ruined, he added, "I got her a necklace. Dagger."

"A necklace and a dagger, or a dagger necklace?" Rory asked.

"Dagger necklace," Angel clarified. He hend up his fingers to indicate the size of the dagger in question. Fortunatley for him this wasn't a euphamism for something.

"Oooh," Rory said, raising an eyebrow. "Perfect gift for her. I'll have to ask her to see it next time I bump into her."

"Celtic hilt too," Angel said, because even while talking about his girlfriend he still had a gay man's taste in, well, everything. "Thought it'd be nice. Symbolic."

"Um, no, no," Angel's demeanor flickered for only a second and then the stoic mask was right back on. "Not like that. So, uh, what about you? How'd you spend the day?"

"I did the single and alone thing in my room. Ate ice cream, read a book," Rory shrugged, still smiling a little bit idiotically.
