Journalistic Integrity (Wednesday, February 15 - 6th period)

"Boys and girls, I want you to answer on simple question for me today: Is it wrong to eavesdrop? Bear in mind, 'eavesdrop' implies that the person in question deliberately overheard. Is that wrong?"

Rita surveyed her class blearily. "Go on. Talk."

"Depends if it's in a public place where anyone could theoretically be listening, or if it's somewhere private," Logan said. "If it's public, that's the risk you take. Private places should be private."

Veronica tossed a note on Logan's desk.

I need to talk to you. I have a class 7th. You free later?

"If people are having a conversation in a public place, then they have to assume the risk that they'll be overheard. But if they aren't aware that there are other people around, or are making an effort to keep their conversation private by whispering, then I think it's wrong to try to overhear."

There might have been a small glance in Logan's direction. "And if you stumble across what you can tell is a private conversation, you shouldn't use the information you may accidentally overhear."

"Because it's none of your business." Veronica realized that she might be being a tiny bit hypocritical.

"So you should respect the privacy of the parties involved." Yep, definitely being a hypocrit.

Barbossa shrugged. "Ye be sayin' it where someone or someone dressed like a plant can hear ye, it be completely up fer grabs. If ye be sayin' somethin' interestin' enough somewhere ye be thinkin' be private? Well, chances are it'll be gettin' out eventually anyway." He grinned. "I be workin' on the assumption that all actions be monitered. It be easier."

"Varies from circumstance to to circumstance. While the person talking bares responsibility for their actions in public, if the listener goes to great lengths to concel their presence, or to give the false impression that the two people are alone, then yes, they are in the wrong."

"How else would news travel so quickly? Yes, it's a little wrong to be digging in other people's bussiness, but it also can't really be helped." Alanna paused for a moment. "What about if a person's cat happens to over hear something and then reports it back to his owner? What would that fall under?" Alanna's bag wiggled.

"I'm in agreement that if you're speaking in a public place, or making no effort not to be overheard, it's up for grabs." He shrugged. "It's not other peoples' responsibility to keep your secrets for you."

"I'm going to have to agree with everyone else," said Janet. "If you're out talking in public and someone overhears what you're saying, then maybe you deserve the repercussions for not taking proper precautions to keep your conversation private. And if you're in private--" She grinned. "Well, at this school, you should sweep your room for bugs if you really want to keep a conversation to yourself."

OOC: I hope the mention of bugs is OK! Janet totally means electronic listening devices, of course, and I didn't even think of Rita being an Animagus 'til after I reread this. So let me know if you want me to edit my comment.
