Ethics [January 31, 2013, 2nd period]

"Hello, everyone," Anakin said. "I understand it was one of those weekends. You now have a pop quiz to help take your mind off of it."

Anakin was a giver like that.

He passed out the papers. "Take the quiz, then we'll see how the answers on ethical questions we take at Fandom compares with the national American average of people who haven't had our sort of--" extensive childhood trauma, generally, "--experiences."

Jack spent a good chunk of the class staring at the quiz. It seemed to mostly be about business and money and getting ahead in life, and everything he knew about that, he'd learned by staring at people from the sidelines.

He circled D on this one, because it genuinely had him scratching his head. What were business ethics, actually?

Yeul carefully considered the question, even though the situation wasn't one that exactly applied to herself and then slowly circled D.

It was hard to say, when her personal timeline held great examples of both.

Victor chewed on the end of his pen as he contemplated this one. His pen hesitated over A and C before he made a dark mark around B.

He figured there were some people who did really well by being honest and doing good work, and others who did really well by lying and stealing, but in the end it all averaged out.

Surreal circled D, then;

It depends on the business and its customers, doesn't it? A good tavern following general tavern-ethics is going to keep more people than a place with shoddy food and dirty sheets.

Maddie didn't like her answer, but she bet it was the right one. She circled A.

2. Would you ever consider exaggerating your accomplishments on a job application or on a college application to get into a better school?

D. No answer

Jack was pretty sure he came with a built-in answer on this one, too.

He circled B. And then added, "I'm never going to get a job or go to college."

This one was simple for Yeul. B.

She was never going to go to college and the job she had couldn't be taken away from her.

This was an easier one, and Victor marked B again. He figured the lie just wasn't worth it.

I'm not going to college, or any other school that cares about that sort of thing.

Maddie circled A, and added in the margin, Anyone who doesn't probably loses the job to someone who did exaggerate but it was a margin so it looked a little squished.

3. If you were certain that you would never be caught, would you act unethically to make more money to get ahead?

A. Yes
B. No
C. Maybe
D. No answer

Jack was still kind of raking his brains to try to find a legendary-being-friendly equivalent to this one.

He circled C, just to mix things up a little, and added, "On the slim chance I ever found a use for money."

And that was it, really. Any money they needed came from the monsters they killed for food.

Victor hesitated but had to circle A -- as much as he'd hated the whole working for Kingpin thing, he hadn't flat-out refused to do it and probably wouldn't if the situation came up again. Next to it, he wrote but only if I needed the money for a good cause.

C and for good measure I am rather sure, however, my ethics are not other people's ethics. I'm not going to break my own standards.

Maddie circled B. She had some ethics, okay?

4. How would you characterize the pressure on you to succeed no matter the cost?

A. A Lot of Pressure or Overwhelming Pressure
B. A Little Pressure
C. No Pressure

Oh! Oh, this one was easy! Jack circled C. And then underlined it a few times.

Because, really, it was hard to mess up a snow day.

Yeul hesitated over this question for a long while. Pressure to succeed? Did she have that?

Eventually she circled C even though it didn't seem quite right.
