Ethics [January 31, 2013, 2nd period]

"Hello, everyone," Anakin said. "I understand it was one of those weekends. You now have a pop quiz to help take your mind off of it."

Anakin was a giver like that.

He passed out the papers. "Take the quiz, then we'll see how the answers on ethical questions we take at Fandom compares with the national American average of people who haven't had our sort of--" extensive childhood trauma, generally, "--experiences."

Anakin consulted the answer sheet. "All right. For question one, half of the national respondents thought you'd be more successful if you don't cheat," he read. "Only 8 percent thought you'd be more successful if you cheat."

He frowned. "Huh?"

Jack Frost

Jack spent a good chunk of the class staring at the quiz. It seemed to mostly be about business and money and getting ahead in life, and everything he knew about that, he'd learned by staring at people from the sidelines.

He circled D on this one, because it genuinely had him scratching his head. What were business ethics, actually?

Jack was pretty sure he came with a built-in answer on this one, too.

He circled B. And then added, "I'm never going to get a job or go to college."

Paddra Nsu-Yeul

Jack was still kind of raking his brains to try to find a legendary-being-friendly equivalent to this one.

He circled C, just to mix things up a little, and added, "On the slim chance I ever found a use for money."

Oh! Oh, this one was easy! Jack circled C. And then underlined it a few times.

Because, really, it was hard to mess up a snow day.

This entire section on Jack's sheet was a litany of circled N's. Who would he have lied to? And this was the first test he'd taken in his life.

... What was a Facebook?

And now, back to the head-scratchers.

Could he just circle the whole section and draw a question mark beside it? He'd add "Not that I'm aware of? Maybe?" to clarify.

He hadn't had a friend in the world until January had started. That was a lot to find out about people in such a short period of time.

Jack had thought he'd had it all figured out before he started taking the test, but now he was mostly left staring at this question blankly.

C. Yep. This was definitely a C.

Yeul carefully considered the question, even though the situation wasn't one that exactly applied to herself and then slowly circled D.

It was hard to say, when her personal timeline held great examples of both.

This one was simple for Yeul. B.

She was never going to go to college and the job she had couldn't be taken away from her.

B.

And that was it, really. Any money they needed came from the monsters they killed for food.

Yeul hesitated over this question for a long while. Pressure to succeed? Did she have that?

Eventually she circled C even though it didn't seem quite right.
