Library, Sunday

Billy had thought about christening his new day of library shifts by cleaning things up front, but someone had returned a whole pile of French cookbooks, so he was spending the start of his shift having a foodgasm instead. It was a valid use of his time, really.

"Please tell me you're working here and not just hanging out at the library on Sunday," Kate said as she wandered into the library.

She was exploring. That made up for being in the library for no apparent reason on Sunday.

"What's wrong with hanging out at the library?" Billy asked with a grin. "Yes, I'm working today. How are you settling in?"

She grinned back. "I don't know. Aren't there video games to play somewhere?" But the 'working' part explained it. "You found yourself a strange school here, Kaplan." Technically she'd found it too but whatever.

"I'm probably going to have a video game date later," Billy teased. "It's the good kind of weird, right? Have you met a lot of the other students?"

"Oh good. I was getting worried about you," Kate smirked. "Some of them, I guess. My 'big sibling' -" she shot Billy a look because really? A 'big sibling?' "- is pretty cool. Also he uses a bow."

"There's someone else in town who uses a bow too," Billy said with a hint of a smirk. Now that she'd been here for a week, maybe she could deal with the Hawkeye thing.

"Oh my God, I know. And he doesn't know us at all," she flailed. "You so totally could have warned me!"

"I didn't know what to tell you," Billy said apologetically. "You'd just gotten here and you were still taking everything in, and I thought 'Hey, your namesake is here but he doesn't know your awesomeness' might break something."

Oh, don't worry. Topher already took care of the breaking something.

"Pft, like I'm that breakable," she argued (even though her brain was). "I'm in his class. Which also is weird because I can see him as a good teacher?"

"Hello, Girl I Don't Know Who Knows Billy," Topher greeted Kate. "I'm Topher. You are... most likely new?"

"I'm Kate," she replied with a half-wave. "And yeah, I'm new."

She kind of hated admitting that. Even though it was totally obvious she was new.

"I've heard of you," Topher shared. "You're awesome, and you have a bow, and you don't have powers."

Those were all pretty much direct quotes.

"Those are all true things." Kate acknowledged. "And in the right order too. I haven't heard of you at all though."

Because that would be impossible with the timelines and universes and shh.

"I'm Billy's boyfriend," Topher announced. "We do the whole... dating/kissing thing."

Topher was setting a great first impression, wasn't he?

"So... 'sup."

Kate being lost for words happened...oh, about never. But this came very close.

"I've met Billy's boyfriend. He's a lot -" greener "- blonder than you are."

"Hey, I'm blond," Topher objected, tugging on some hair that was falling in front of his eyes to verify this. "Are you sure you're not thinking of his brother? Because he is blonder than me. But also not dating him."

Being a redhead was not being blond! "Yeah, I'm sure I'm not thinking of Tommy," Kate snapped. Tommy who she was also not dating!

She eyed him suspiciously. "You're dating Billy. Kaplan." She gestured towards the boy in question. Look, there could be a misunderstanding here.

Okay, far be it for Topher to visit the library with a phenomenally good reason, but as it happened, Billy pretty much counted as one of those. So.

"You have a new day," Topher announced as he walked in with a tupperware container in one hand. "Or I've completely lost track of the days of the week. New day?"

"New day," Billy verified, sticking a piece of paper into the cookbook he was reading to mark his page. "It's been a little quieter, which is nice. What have you got there?" he asked, motioning to the tupperware.

"Well, I was thinking about getting you coffee, but then I remembered it was raining chocolate-covered strawberries in the store yesterday," Topher explained as he set the tupperware down on the desk. "And these were free, minus the damage to the exposed equpiment, and they're chocolate, so I figured they're better than coffee."

"Ooh, definitely better," Billy said, perking up. "Have you or Tony figured out what the fruit thing is all about?" If anyone would know, it would be one of them, they were the smart ones.

"I personally suspect it was a contribution of older, facial-haired Tony to make us work," Topher hypothesized. "Which means I don't wanna try to turn it off in case there's a bigger surprise that that would unleash."

Like raining vegetables, which would not be as tasty.

"Does the library do weird stuff like that ever?"

"Well, the books act up sometimes." Ah, the comments one could only make here. "But I don't usually have a fruit problem."

"See, that's weirder to me," Topher decided. "Fruit is at least alive, kind of. Also, no mid-workday snack."

"Well, I don't usually have to worry about a mid-workday snack, because this super nice guy brings me stuff," Billy said, taking one of the strawberries with a smile.
