Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

[OCD up! This is the FIRST post for general mingling. Please use this post first, if your browser can handle the comment load. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here and there's more room for mingling here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

She followed his gaze over his shoulder, but couldn't see or smell anyone or thing there. Then again, this was Fandom, so that didn't necessarily mean anything. "Is someone else up there with you? You guys could come down and grab some of the food. It's one of the best things about this picnic."

Yeah, nobody there. Jack stared back at the tree for a moment more, before slowly looking back down at the girl who was most definitely looking straight at him, and then tentatively pointing a finger at his chest.

"You... are talking to me, right? I'm the only one in the tree, so far as I can tell."

"Um... yes, I'm talking to you," Mercy said, looking at him curiously. "Why? Am I not supposed to or something?"

Had she broken some sort of taboo talking to him? There were some many people from different cultures it could be possible.

"Most people can't," Jack replied, giving his legs a little swing as he watched her from his branch. "Which means you must believe in Jack Frost, huh?"

It was kind of a safe assumption. That was, after all, how this sort of thing worked.

It was also kind of breaking his brain a little. He was torn between laughing and crying and scrambling down from his branch to hug the daylights out of her.

"You're Jack Frost?" Mercy said in amazement. "I don't think I've ever actually met one of the fae before. You mean... people can't see you if they don't believe?"

If he hugged her she'd be startled, but she'd hug him back.

"Right," Jack replied, not entirely certain what to make of the 'fae' comment, but deciding that he'd take it, so long as it meant he was visible to the girl standing below him. "A few people have seen me around here today, so far. You're number three out of everyone here. That's actually kind of more than I'm used to."

"Well, it's nice to meet you," she said. "I'm Mercedes Thompson. And I'm glad I can see you. It would be hard enough to come to a new place and not be able to even be noticed."

She hesitated. "Are you - I'm guessing you can do all the thongs legend says you can. Freezing stuff, putting frost on windows and all that?"

[identity profile] nips-your-nose.livejournal.com 2013-01-06 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
"All that," Jack said, smiling a little more broadly at her. "Have you ever enjoyed a snow day? That's all me, Mercedes."

And yes, now he was totally bragging.

Mercy laughed. "Not a whole lot of snow days up in Aspen Creek," she said. "Too much snow to begin with and everyone can pretty get to school no matter what. But..."

Her smile was far away and wistful. "There are days out there where the frost and ice just makes the whole place so magical. Especially right at dawn as the sun comes up onto the trees and the snow and the whole place just looks like diamond sparkles. So thank you for that."

Jack looked quite pleased at that, going so far as to stand up and then bow a sweeping bow.

His balance on that branch was fantastic.

"You're very welcome," he replied. "Really, it's my pleasure. We'll see if I can't manage a few of those around here too, hm?"

Having grown up with werewolves who all had amazing grace and agility, his balance wasn't as impressive as it might have been otherwise, but she still grinned.

And then remembered her conversation with Arietty. "That would be fabulous! And I know someone here who would be even more thrilled. She's never even really seen much snow."

"Never seen much snow? Really? That's terrible!" After all, how was anybody supposed to believe in Jack Frost if they hadn't ever seen snow? "Maybe you can point her out to me sometime, and I'll be certain to do something extra special outside her window, just to make up for that. There are some places that don't exactly play nicely with the frost, after all."

Like, say, indoors.

"I'll do that," Mercy said cheerfully.

Then something occurred to her. "Hey, she's tiny, like," Mercy gestured, measuring out Arietty's size with her hands, "Really tiny. Can you change size, too, like you do in the stories? 'Cause it would be so nice for her to be able to have someone who could be her size sometime."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2013]

[identity profile] nips-your-nose.livejournal.com 2013-01-06 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Change size?" Jack blinked, and then shook his head, offering Mercy an apologetic shrug of his shoulders. "I'm afraid not, no. The stories aren't always accurate, I'm afraid. That'll happen if you're stuck invisible for a while, I guess."

Most stories also made him out to be an old man, after all. He was hardy that.

Well. He was technically a few centuries old. But still.

[personal profile] walkswithcoyote 2013-01-06 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
"That's what my guardian used to say," Mercy agreed. "It starts getting hard to tell the truth from the stories after hundreds of years of them."

Yes, she was just assuming Jack was hundreds of years old. The stories went back at least that far after all.

"I was kind of hoping though. Arietty manages great, but I always think it must be tough for her not to have anyone her own size here."

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2013]

[identity profile] nips-your-nose.livejournal.com 2013-01-06 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Jack nodded a little, offering Mercy a little, almost sad smile.

"Lonely, right? I think I can relate, even if I can't help out with the being small thing. If you're looking for someone small, you'd probably be better off talking to the Tooth Fairy. She's got helper-fairies that are only a couple of inches tall, I've heard."
walkswithcoyote: (Shocked)

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2013]

[personal profile] walkswithcoyote 2013-01-06 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
"The tooth fairy is real?" Now that surprised her. She could see the effect Jack Frost was supposed to have on things, but she'd always assumed the tooth fairy had just been made up by parents.

"Well, if I ever run into her I'll ask about the helper fairies, I guess."

"A lot of things are real," Jack replied. "The Tooth Fairy, the Sandman, Santa Claus."

A beat.

"And I guess the Easter Bunny. But he's a jerk."

Jack was biased.

"Big ears, twitchy nose, huge feet, and good with a boomerang," Jack rattled off, rolling his eyes up toward the sky. Really, he was not a fan. "Also prone to holding a grudge for decades over something like a little blizzard."

On Easter Sunday.

Details.

[personal profile] walkswithcoyote 2013-01-06 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
That got a laugh.

"A blizzard at a really inconvenient time, I'm guessing."

Hey, she grew up with werewolves who could hold grudges for, well... centuries.

[identity profile] nips-your-nose.livejournal.com 2013-01-06 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe? I mean, kind of. If you're someone who doesn't run around underground in giant bunny holes or anything," Jack groused. And then at least had the decency to look sheepish about it a moment later. "On Easter."
walkswithcoyote: (Relaxed laughing)

Re: General Mingling [Spring 2013]

[personal profile] walkswithcoyote 2013-01-06 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
And there was even more laughter. "On Easter? Oh, Jack, you're too much!"

"I'm almost just enough," Jack chuckled, giving his shoulders a shrug. "Bunnymund is just a stick in the mud. North always handles the snow just fine, and he has way more things to deliver in a night than a bunch of eggs."
walkswithcoyote: (Laughing)

"By North I'm guessing you mean Santa Claus?" Mercy asked. "If so, He has just a little more experience with snow and cold than the Easter Bunny."

Still laughing, yes.
