Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the ~~moddable~~ warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

"How much time?" She sort of wanted to see this.

"Depends on how fast I can get a piece of paper and a marker," Jessica said. "After that, however long it takes to draw a pie chart."

"Doesn't sound very scientific," Maddie said.

"It's a sample size of one. Science went out the window the second I brought it up," Jessica said. "By the way, I'm Jessica. And I usually have a much greater appreciation for science than that."

"Maddie," she said. "So I guess you're one of the smart kids?"

Oh, just wait, honey.

"I like to think so. I also like to think I'm one of the funny ones," Jessica said. "There are people who would argue with both of those, but they're dumb and not funny."

"Also they'd be kind of rude," she added.

"That's what I say whenever that happens," Jessica said. "Which is, to be fair, all of zero times. But it's what I would say."

"And now you're prepared for the second time," she said. "Have you been here long?" She didn't exactly seem new.

"Only a semester," Jessica said. "But you adapt quickly. A month in and you'll feel like you've been here forever, but not in a bad way."

"That's... more encouraging than I would have thought." Seriously, was she hallucinating by this point?

"I'm an encourager by nature," Jessica said. "Think positive thoughts, do good deeds, and by this time next semester you'll be the one telling a new kid that it's fine here."

Maddie couldn't really see herself doing that, despite the fact that she was actually pretty good at doing that. "Everyone's so nice. I sort of think I'm being Punk'd," she blurted out.

"Well, you're not completely wrong. It's kind of a wacky place where wacky things - like dinosaurs - happen. So everyone being nice is the karmic balance for whatever you might have heard about already," Jessica said.

"I'm used to some wacky things happening back home, too. People can still be jerks there," Maddie pointed out.

"I have to ask, what kind of wacky? Because I'm from a crazy superhero place, and I think that gave me a leg up on a lot of people," Jessica said.

"A crazy superhero place, actually," Maddie said. "Ever hear of the Avengers, or Ms. Marvel, or anyone?" Striving for casual, probably failing....

"Avengers. That's Captain America and Iron Man and everyone, right?" Jessica asked. She was on the other side of this conversation months ago. "We have them on my world, but they're called the Ultimates. By the way, there are alternate universes where superhero teams are called different things. That's one thing you should know."

"Yeah, that's them... Wait, seriously?" She'd kind of thought she was done with all that.

"Sorry, I just assume that's public knowledge anyplace there's a Reed Richards," Jessica said. "You have a Reed Richards, right? Preferably a non-evil one?"

"Yeah. Sorry, I just... kind of thought I left all that stuff behind. You have an evil one?" Was it bad that made her feel slightly better about people thinking she was a potential supervillain?

"Oh, no, all that stuff is coming with you. At least it won't be too hard to adjust to," Jessica said, looking on the bright side.

"And yeah, Richards went completely wacko a while ago in my world. It was pretty much completely unpleasant in every way imaginable."

"I bet. People just need to stop doing that in general," Maddie decided. That went for her too.

"Truer words were never spoken, my friend," Jessica said. "Well, since you know your superheroes, I should probably warn you that Cap and Thor are teachers here. So, that's probably a little weird, too."

Considering the last she'd heard of Thor was that he was dead, that was really startling.

"What? How? Your universe?" Oh, god, please let it be Jessica's universe or Maddie was going to have a lot of explaining to do.
