Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

There was the bonfire for everyone who thought Maryland in January was a little too cool for their taste, as well as the moddable warm food and drinks, and chairs and tables in the school colors of blue and gold. Some tables were also set a little further away from the crowds.

Because there were always people who preferred the fringes.

Gert couldn't say she was surprised that someone had recognized her, given all the press there had been about what had happened with her friends and all their parents. "Congratulations, you picked up a newspaper sometime this month," she said, immediately on her guard. "But I'm not anymore. Now I'm stuck in high school."

You couldn't claim to be a runaway while you were attending the fine academic institution Captain America had paid for you to go to. It was a rule.

Gert was bitter.

"Apparently, adults with powers are allowed to decide what happens to kids with no parents nowadays," Gert groused. "Thanks, Captain America. Like my friends and I weren't doing just fine on LA by ourselves."

Well. You know. They had been living in a cave and had almost died many times. So.

"I am certain you were," Loki assured her without any condescension in his tone. Okay, a little. "Mine brother decided it best that I learn amongst the peoples of Midgard."

He craned his head upward, looking for a familiar head of blonde hair.

Well, maybe if you were in one with a box of scraps.

"Your brother must not know how crappy our school systems are," Gert replied, undaunted by the 'Midgard' remark. "Wherever you come from must be pretty sucky if this is the better alternative."

Gert had such a cheerful disposition! Maybe she'd start a Happiness Club here in Fandom. Derek could sponsor!

Well then. "He made you go to the same school he teaches at?" Gert repeated, looking skeptical. "Typical grown-up. What, does he follow you around to make sure you're eating your vegetables, too?"
