"There is a saying on this planet that before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes ~~and that way you're a mile away and have their shoes~~," Anakin began, holding a piece of paper in his hands.

"In that spirit, I have paired each of you up with a classmate. Your assignment over the next week is to spend two days together, one for each student. You'll show how you live, what you're studying and what you do with your spare time in an effort to foster understanding of the various cultures and backgrounds that are pushed together here in Fandom. Your other teachers have been given notification of this assignment as well, so don't worry about interrupting their classes with your new shadows."

He glanced at the paper. "There are 17 of you in this class , which means that the odd person out is paired with me. Congratulations, Ulrik, that's you."

"The rest of you, please listen for your names, then go meet up with your new friend." Because he knew how Fandom students could be, he added, "Actually wearing their shoes is not necessary."

"I've got my money on we've managed to kill one another by, like, Thursday," Sparkle offered, smirking as he crossed his arms over his chest. "We should get a pot going, have people place bets on how long it takes for everyone to drive their partner nuts or get themselves arrested. We could make a killing on this."

Wasn't that what this was for? An opportunity to profit?

"That's not a bad idea," Jim said, actually considering this a viable option. "No one was meant for constant companionship so even the nicest, most tolerant person can't handle it all the time. And I bet there'd be a few people who would say they could do it for a week easily."

"Oh, yeah," Sparkle scoffed. "I mean, hell, I'm used to sharing a room or whatever, but if I wanted a constant shadow all the time, I'd be getting down on one knee, and whoever I'm proposing to better be willing to put out."

Somehow, Sparkle didn't think he was Jim's type.

"But, hey, it could be worse. We could be stuck with the teacher, like my roomie, there."

"Yeah, does that mean he's gotta stay at the teacher's house?" Jim had to wonder. He glanced over at Ulrik. "Have dinner with him? Breakfast? Afternoon tea?"

"If he stays at the teacher's place, I so get first dibs on rummaging through his stuff," Sparkle decided.

He... probably wouldn't actually do that, mostly because Ulrik also had access to his stuff. But it was fun to speculate about when your roommate was some kind of royalty or something.

"He got anything good?" And if he did, Jim wondered why Cade hadn't found his way to the room yet. He had a nose for that.

"No clue," Sparkle admitted. "I haven't gone through his stuff yet. Don't want to have to have it out with him if he thinks that's like some kind of open invitation to go through my shit."

Because clearly, Sparkle's possessions were sacred. Especially his yellow socks. People would someday lose teeth over Sparkle's yellow socks.

"Well, you're a saint with spiky hair," Jim joked, shaking his head. "You can't go through my stuff either even if we are supposed to be chummy. You can go through my roommate's stuff though."

Sorry, Jackson. No, he wasn't sorry.

"Free reign."

"Sweeet. I'll make off with like a pair of socks a day, see if he notices by the end of the week or not," Sparkle decided. "Bonus points go to me if it starts driving him completely nuts. Your stuff's out of bounds, sure. Because you expect it, and there's no fun in that."

"Socks?" Jim asked, chuckling. "There a shortage of socks on your end? Or just a weird fetish?"

"Neither," Sparkle laughed. "It's way more fun to run off with little shit that nobody's going to really miss. Break into someone's home and make off with like a salt shaker and a ballpoint pen or whatever, and leave the jewelry and the money and all that behind and see if they ever notice. Watch 'em go crazy."

Sparkle... had issues.

"I'd probably just throw out the socks. Ugh, used socks. Your roommate's Jackson, right? He's supposed to be my little brother. I bet he's got some kind of nasty foot fungus."

Sparkle's issues had issues.

"You got Jackson as a little brother? Man, I bet he loved you."

Because yeah, Jackson was a clean cut preppie and Sparkle definitely was not. Jim kind of loved it.

"He is definitely my roommate and I've already offered his stuff out to others. I share the love."

"We had, like, one talk at the welcome picnic, he made it clear that he thought I was some kind of freak," Sparkle replied, shrugging. "Maybe I'll check up on him again sometime. You know, throw a little 'told you so' at him about this place being messed up. Annoy the shit out of him."

Because he could! Being annoying was fun, dammit.

"I would be in favor of that," Jim said because anything that drove Jackson was nuts was something he wanted to support. "So, you hanging around my room for a few days should make him extremely happy."

"Sweeeeet," Sparkle replied, bouncing a little in his seat and clapping his hands. "Oh, this week is gonna be awesome. And on Sunday, you can come to my shift at work and we can burn all the ugly merch in the burn barrel. Or, like, Jackson's fungus-infested socks, but you have to be careful about spores with shit like that."

A legitimate concern.

"See, we might not kill each other after all!" Jim said, snickering. "We'll just be too busy causing mayhem and destruction to everyone else."

Or to Jackson.

Poor, poor Jackson.

"If you ask me, that's the most productive use of my time I've had planned out in years."
