Oppression, Resistance & Revolution: Friday

"I'm sure most of you are keen on leaving this class early," Magneto announced as he walked into the danger shop precisely as the bell rang. "Rest assured your homecoming activities can wait. Fun and frivolity has it's place. So does knowledge."

"Before the fall break we watch a movie," he continued as he began his regular circuit around the room. "About a man and his desire for a free country for his people. You may ask: what made that man different from others? For that I can give you a simple answer: conviction. As I mentioned before, just because you may take the option of non-violence does not mean it's going to be easy."

He gave his students a sinister grin and snapped his fingers. The danger shop swift changed from blank walls to what appeared to be a modern day protest. The only switch to this that there were counter protesters on the other side.

"Today, we're going to test your conviction," Magneto said with a malevolent look of glee. "And just see how well you can do. If you wish to bow out... you may. However that may tell me more about you than any other class you have taken with me so far."

He pointed at the protest going on and gestured for the class to join in. "Begin."

Cassidy decided that the wagon thing was much safer than being out where the people could keep hurling insults and vegetables at her.

That didn't stop her from trying to shield other classmates from what was happening while fighting to get the restraints off of herself.

[[OOC: Others that don't want to be shielded can simply assume Cassidy was out of range or her energy was a little depleted from her own dealing and now trying to get her handcuffs off. :D]]

Evan was still crackling with power as he was handcuffed and escorted into the police wagon, eyes glowing an angry red. He was wet and shaking, giving a look at the officers as they threw other students into the van that spoke volumes about what he thought of them.

But they were the police... they were supposed to be the good guys, right? So... he couldn't hurt them. Even if they were wrong.

... Right?

"I don't understand," Cassidy murmured to Evan in confusion when she caught sight of him. "Why are they acting like this?"

"Money," Evan mumbled, not taking his eyes from the doorway of the van. "This whole thing is about money, and if we get what we want, that means they have to give up their advantage. It's hard to come to terms with an idea as simple as eliminating disparity. Equality scares them, I think."

"But isn't the right thing to do is help people who don't have as much as you do?"

Cassidy, your belief in people was adorable, really.

"Of course it is. But if everyone believed that, we probably wouldn't have a class like this one, would we?"

He kind of had you there, Cassidy.

Yeah, he did and she knew it.

Cassidy bit her lip as she silently worked on passing her wrists out of the cuffs.

"No, you're right, we wouldn't," she admitted. "But I still don't understand why people treat each other like this."

Evan looked at a loss for a moment, his eyes still crackling with barely held-back power as he looked again toward the door. And then his shoulders bunched up a little, and he sighed, shaking his head.

"Because they can, I think," he murmured. "People do things like this to other people because they can."

Karla was going to lead the police on a merry chase. She kept passing through the handcuffs and even out of the van once or twice, when they managed to manhandle her into it.

She wasn't going to hurt anyone, but she was going to continue to inform the counter-protesters about the likelihood of farm animals being a dominant branch of their family trees. And creatively describing how they got there.

"Still not hurting anyone," Karla said. "I'm just not willing to be arrested for using my right to protest. While keeping the police away from other people who deserve to be arrested even less."

She did give him an unimpressed glare. "Good job tring to make this about you, by the way. Hate to inform you that it isn't."

Umm, no. It was always about Karla. Duh.

Cue the very mature eye roll. "Because you're the icon of peaceful resistance. Riiiiiight. Hypocrite."

Because if she was already going to be in detention anyway...

On one of Karla's rounds through the van, Evan glanced up at her, little crackles of frustrated power occasionally skipping in violet arcs across his skin.

"If you can keep doing that, why do they keep arresting you?"

"Because it frustrates them that they can't figure out how I keep doing it," Karla retorted, pausing with half of her body passed through the van wall.

Evan's last headmistress had been Kitty Pryde. He wouldn't be phased by that, right?

"And I keep letting them because it amuses me and it keeps them occupied trying to manhandle me instead of people who can't hold their own."

Evan took that into consideration, both the way she'd stopped mid-phase (he hadn't known she could do that, too!) and her distraction strategy.

"They're not going to mistake you for a mutant if you do that and just take it out on you even harder, are they?"

Look, it was a totally legitimate question.
glacial_queen: (It is on)

Re: Classroom Exercise: Part IV

[personal profile] glacial_queen 2012-10-20 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
It was legitimate. Which was why it had Karla scowling a little as she answered.

"They can try," Karla said darkly. "But they won't succeed. And it will let everyone else in the crowd see what kind of tactics they are willing to use."
genesishero: (Not Understanding!)

[personal profile] genesishero 2012-10-20 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
"If they think you're a mutant, I don't think there are many people in the crowd who will care all that much," Evan murmured. "It'll just make more people afraid of you, and it'll hurt the cause the rest of us are trying to stand for."

Yeah, this was somehow the kid who hero-worshipped Magneto.

It hadn't made much sense to Uncle Cluster, either.

In reality, this was about where Surreal would slip into the shadows, as she and what passed for law enforcement did not exactly get along. Ever.

But that would be letting the annoying male win, as would getting in the van.

And Surreal had Craft.

Breathe, she reminded herself, focusing on the words of tutors from a lifetime ago. This world is nothing, pass through it. Pass.

Maintaining intangibility for longer than the few moments to pass through a wall or a door was difficult. Doing it with people trying to grab you without falling through the earth was agonizing, especially since Surreal was still only a Green. Her clenched jaw, however, was the only outward show of her fight.

Bring it.

Ace was neither stupid, nor blind to what other people were pulling and getting chewed out for. If this was real? She'd be the first one kicking back at the pricks, or at least trying to run interference to let her mates scarper off. Passive resistance was not her thing. Passive anything was not her thing.

It was the point of this bit of the class, though, and Ace was capable of following instructions. For a while. If she trusted that there was something worth it waiting at the end.

So she let herself get bundled into the van with no more than gritted teeth and a few snarls of "Oi, watch the fingers, arse-face!"

The 'Revolution' part of this class had better be big, loud, and BYO-weapons, though.

...and yeah, Korra wasn't so calm any more. She slammed one palm against the ground and any police near her were suddenly finding it a lot harder to keep their footing between the newly uneven ground and the slick of ice covering everything. Guess they shouldn't have been so free with that fire hose earlier.

But given she hadn't threatened anyone with van-sized chunks of rock, this was still better than last time.

This, Billy was willing to put up with peacefully. It wasn't like any jail could actually hold him in the long run, which he knew probably wasn't the point of the assignment. But, he figured it was better to act truthfully.
