Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

There were some extra tables set up in the shade of the trees on the lawn, away from the buffet in spots where it might be less crowded and much quieter. If you wanted to get away from the crowd, or stake out a spot to talk to folks, these spots would be where to go!

"Holy crap, dragons?" She'd totally seen some girl in a pink nightgown with a bunch of lizards or whatever, but that whole setup just seemed to scream BAG OF CRAZY so she'd avoided it. "Yeah, mine just has that baby that she says isn't hers, but, you know." Olive rolled her eyes. "We're like, super-doomed. There's other normal people here, though! I met a couple of them!"

Jessica actually felt a little bad for Olive if she was being counted as a normal person. At least she hadn't immediately revealed that she had a secret identity, though.

"I think a baby might actually beat dragons. Which is the first time that's been said, I think," Jessica said. "I met a few, too, who I think are even more normal than me." Again, not tough, outside of her cover.

"We call that 'boring,'" Olive said helpfully.

Little did she know that all of the 'normal' people she'd met today came from...perhaps less than normal roots.

"Hey, there's nothing wrong with a little boring to take the edge off the crazy," Jessica said. "I'm thinking of starting a book club for just that."

"Okay but it can't be like, new books," Olive replied. "Or ones with a movie that people might want to watch."

Stupid Demi Moore.

"I was probably just going to base it on going to a book store and finding the funniest title possible," Jessica said.

"Get, like, self-help books that no one here needs," Olive suggested. "Like Performance Coaching for Dummies, or What to Expect When -- nope, wait, someone could probably use that here."

Like, not naming names, but someone whose name rhymed with "Gorilla" probably could. For her friend's baby.

"Well, at this point you'd think someone would know what to expect," Jessica said. "It's more of a 'What She Should Have Done' thing."

"'Convincing Lies to Tell People About Your Baby,'" Olive offered. "Not included: 'it's my friend's baby.' Come on."

She would probably feel bad about this.

"Did she explain why she has 'her friend's' baby?" Jessica asked. "And if so, did it check out at all?"

"He's in France fighting World War I," Olive said. "So you know. Not like, my first choice in alibis, generally speaking?"

"Actually, that's a little more likely than you'd think," Jessica said. "We're going to school at a dimensional nexus, apparently, where people can just flit around through space and time. So it's definitely not impossible that her babydaddy is in the Great War."

"Oh, I'm not denying this dude might be her baby's daddy," she replied. "I'm just saying, you know, this kid's mom is also not like a 'let's go get our deerstalker caps!' kind of mystery." Pause. "That being said, 'His dad is in France' is totally the new 'My girlfriend lives in Canada.'"

"I know what I'm using from now on if I even need to get someone off my case," Jessica said. "I won't mention the war, though."

"Probably wise." Olive paused, mentally rewinding, and added, "What the hell is a dimensional nexus? It sounds like a skin condition."

"It's where a bunch of alternate realities meet freely. That's how you get people from World War I and people with dragons and people from space all in the same place," Jessica said. "I've done some reading on the subject."

"And it's a real thing?" Olive checked. Jessica had seemed so normal. She really didn't want to give up on that yet.

"I'm sure it sounds like really bad science fiction, but yeah, it's real," Jessica said. "And from everything I've heard today, you'll probably have proof of that sooner rather than later. Don't judge too hard for a week and see what happens."

"I'm not judging," Olive replied. "I'm just...you know, it's not every day you meet a chick from 1915 who's still a natural brunette? But yeah. It sounds like bad sci fi, but it explains everything."

"Okay, good. Because I know how crazy it sounded before Reed Richards' work became public in my world," Jessica said. "At least here, there's more available proof."

"Who's Reed Richards?" she asked, because that sounded like an important guy who she should probably look up or something, if she was going to stop thinking she was stuck inside an LSD trip.

"Brilliant scientist guy who got superpowers, made a whole lot of bad choices, tried to take over the world, and got punched in the face a lot for his troubles," Jessica explained. "At least in my world. If you ignore the mistakes and going evil, he did a lot of groundbreaking work in exploring alternate realities that nobody else was able to figure out or keep up with."

"There's superpowers in your world?" Yeah, sorry, Olive stopped listening after that part. "Wait, what?"

Bye bye, reputation as one of the chosen few normal friends, Jessica. You were so close.

She was a much less normal friend than Olive would ever know. Unless she found out that Jess had powers. Which was distressingly likely for anyone she even know.

"Your world doesn't have them?" Jessica asked. "That's moving up on the list of first questions I should ask people. 'What's your name? What bands do you like? Do people have superpowers where you come from?'"

"Olive Penderghast, I listen to a little bit of everything," lies, she mostly listened to Natasha Beddingfield on repeat, still, because that song was like herpes in that it would go away but it always, always came back, "and no, no one has powers in my world. Not unless you count amazing powers of bitchiness, in which case I know about three girls back home who qualify."
